This is the third Chinese national accused of smuggling biological materials into Michigan. Despite last week’s arrest of Chinese agroterrorists, China continues to wage bio-war on the United States.
Authorities say Chengxuan Han is a doctoral student at the College of Life Science and Technology in the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China.
Agroterrorist Han is from Huazhong University of Science and Technology, which works closely with China’s military and defense industry.
On June 8, Chengxuan Han was stopped by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Detroit Metropolitan Airport after arriving on a J1 visa. Officers inspected Han, who, during that time, reportedly lied to officials about the packages and the biological materials she is accused of previously sending to the U.S. Officers say Han related content from an electronic device three days before arriving in the U.S.
In light of recent bio-terror arrests of Chinese students and researchers, all Chinese student visas should be reviewed.
Chengxuan Han “sent four packages to the United States from the PRC containing concealed biological material. These packages were addressed to individuals associated with a laboratory at the University of Michigan. On June 8, 2025, Han arrived at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on a J1 visa.”
“Customs and Border Protection officers conducted an inspection of Han, during which Han made false statements about the packages and the biological materials she had previously shipped to the United States. CBP officers also found that the content of Han’s electronic device had been deleted three days prior to her arrival in the United States.”
“At the conclusion of the border inspection, Han was interviewed by agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and ICE HSI. During this interview, Han admitted to sending the packages, admitted that the packages contained biological material related to round worms, and admitted to making false statements to the CBP officers during her inspection,” The Department of Justice wrote.
Yesterday, @FBIDetroit arrested a second Chinese national on charges of smuggling biological materials into the U.S. and lying to federal agents.

DOJ charges another Chinese researcher with smuggling ‘biological materials’ into US
The new case accuses Chinese researcher Chengxuan Han of trying to smuggle packages containing concealed biological material related to round worms into the country by sending multiple packages that contain the material to a lab in the U.S.
By Misty Severi, NY Post, June 9, 2025:
The Justice Department (DOJ) on Monday charged a citizen of China with smuggling biological material into the United States and making false statements.
ADVERTISEMENTThe charges come a week after the DOJ charged two other Chinese researchers with attempting to smuggle a fungus dubbed “Fusarium graminearum,” into the U.S., which it claimed scientific research “classifies as a potential agroterrorism weapon.”
The new case accuses Chinese researcher Chengxuan Han of trying to smuggle packages containing concealed biological material related to round worms into the country by sending multiple packages that contain the material to a lab under the University of Michigan ahead of her arrival on June 8.
Han is getting her PhD from the College of Life Science and Technology at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan.
The Chinese national was arrested on Sunday at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport, and allegedly made false statements regarding the packages when questioned by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) officials. She later allegedly admitted to sending the packages to the FBI, and that she lied about the packages to CBP. She also admitted it contained the biological material.
“The alleged smuggling of biological materials by this alien from a science and technology university in Wuhan, China—to be used at a University of Michigan laboratory—is part of an alarming pattern that threatens our security,” U.S. Attorney Jerome Gorgon, Jr said in a statement. “The American taxpayer should not be underwriting a PRC-based smuggling operation at one of our crucial public institutions.”
The FBI, CBP and Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials are investigating the case.
