Freedom of speech is the foundation of a free society. Without it, a tyrant can wreak havoc unopposed, while his opponents are silenced.

Putting up with being offended is essential in a pluralistic society in which people differ on basic truths. If a group will not bear being offended without resorting to violence, that group will rule unopposed while everyone else lives in fear, while other groups curtail their activities to appease the violent group. This results in the violent group being able to tyrannize the others.

If speech that offends a group is outlawed, that group has absolute power, and a free society is destroyed. A group that cannot be criticized cannot be opposed. It can work its will no matter what it is, and no one will be able to say anything to stop it.

Inoffensive speech needs no protection. The First Amendment was developed precisely in order to protect speech that was offensive to some, in order to prevent those who had power from claiming they were offended by speech opposing them and silencing the powerless.

The antidote to ‘bad speech’ is more speech, more conversation. The left cannot permit the free exchange of ideas because their failed ideas cannot stand up to scrutiny and challenge.

A free society is by its nature one in which people put up with others being uncivil and offensive. The alternative is a quiet authoritarian society in which only one opinion is allowed and the others are silenced, and ultimately sent to the camps.

Following concerns being raised in regards to the Department of Homeland Security’s Disinformation Governance Board, launched three weeks ago, the department is reportedly putting this project on a “pause.”

According to The Washington Post, multiple employees working within the DHS said that the program is being “paused” just three weeks after its announcement.

On Monday, those with knowledge of the situation said that DHS decided to shut down the board. The following morning, Nina Jankowicz had drafted a resignation letter in response.

The Washington Post reported: “But Tuesday night, Jankowicz was pulled into an urgent call with DHS officials who gave her the choice to stay on, even as the department’s work was put on hold because of the backlash it faced, according to multiple people with knowledge of the call.”Groups working on mis-, dis-, and mal-information within the DHS have reportedly been suspended, with the board potentially facing cancellation pending a review from the Homeland Security Advisory Council. Jankowicz is reportedly evaluating her position within the DHS.

“Nina Jankowicz has been subjected to unjustified and vile personal attacks and physical threats,” a DHS spokesperson told the Post in a statement. “In congressional hearings and in media interviews, the Secretary has repeatedly defended her as eminently qualified and underscored the importance of the Department’s disinformation work, and he will continue to do so.”

The Washington Post’s article titled “How the Biden administration let right-wing attacks derail its disinformation efforts” places the blame for the ending of this program on conservatives on social media, saying that “Jankowicz’s experience is a prime example of how the right-wing Internet apparatus operates, where far-right influencers attempt to identify a target, present a narrative and then repeat mischaracterizations across social media and websites with the aim of discrediting and attacking anyone who seeks to challenge them.”
