Turkish Red Crescent uses UN refugee aid to buy luxury cars –
By Ahval, September 12, 2019:
ADVERTISEMENTThe Turkish Red Crescent, the country’s largest non-governmental relief organisation, used hundreds of thousands of dollars of UN aid meant for refugees to purchase luxury cars, left-leaning newspaper Sol reported on Tuesday.
The Turkish Red Crescent, which is known for close ties to Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), bought 10 4×4 vehicles, including two ultra-luxury editions, with $643,000 provided by the UN World Food Programme to fulfill the basic needs of foreigners living in the country, said Sol, referring to a report in Cumhuriyet newspaper.
The vehicles were considered “emergency purchases” that would improve the Red Crescent’s access to rural areas.
Last week, members of the Turkish Red Crescent’s board were found to have strong ties to the AKP and to Islamic foundations managed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s children, according to Sol, adding that Kerem Kınık, Red Crescent vice president, worked on the campaign for AKP Istanbul Mayoral Candidate Binali Yıldırım earlier this year.
