Saturday Night Cinema: Brief Encounter (starring Richard Burton and Sophia Loren)

12

Tonight’s Saturday Night Cinema is a remake of one of GR’s favorite films,  David Lean’s Brief Encounter. Fans of Saturday Night Cinema know I am loathe to run remakes, but this one stars Richard Burton and Sophia Loren, so how could I resist? I liked this film because I like the stars so very much. Don’t compare it to the original with Trevor Howard, Celia Johnson and Rachmaninov, of course, just enjoy on its own. There is something so lovely in it, in all of it.

This mad-forTV was maligned by the critics:

The Hallmark Hall of Fame presentation Arrives with intriguing credentials. Its stars are Sophia Loren and Richard Burton, It was filmed on English locations. And its producer credits are unusually ornate: A Carlo Ponti‐Clarke Production by arrangement with the Rank Organization, in association with NBC and FCB Productions. The parts, however, add up to little more than excruciating dullness.

The drama, based on Noël Coward’s “Still Life,” has two immediate strikes against it. One is the tale itself, a thoroughly sentimental story of near‐adulterous love filtered through the soft‐focus fantasy of a writer who wouldn’t dream of getting himself into a similar situation. The other is a previous production, made in 1946, that the directorial skill of David Lean turned into a minor film classic. Unflattering comparison is unavoidable.
