Not to put too fine a point on it, but according to the ummah (the Muslim world), they are married under Islamic law. Under Islam, sharia supersedes all manmade law. Period.
Further, Muslim men are allowed four wives under the misogynistic sharia. Under British law, polygamy is still illegal (at least for now).

About 6 in 10 Muslim women who have had traditional Islamic weddings in Britain are not legally married, according to a survey.

They have had a nikah marriage but 61% failed to go through a separate civil ceremony, recognised by the family courts.
If their marriage breaks down and they cannot agree on a division of assets, it means they must fight through the civil courts rather than start with a presumption that they will get an equal share.
The survey, of 923 women in the UK, was based on responses to community researchers rather than random sampling. The findings will be broadcast on Tuesday on Channel 4 in The Truth About Muslim Marriage.

Not that it maters, if there ever is anything that requires a court to intervene or make a decision, it will be in favour of the husband, as shariah clearly states that every woman is a possession of a man, women have no rights, to the point that if they are murdered, that is not considered a crime.
Agree. Unless there is heavy penalty with 6-12 months Jail term this will continue.

It is important to the muslim man NOT to register the muslim marriage with the civil authority.
This is because, if he has children, the state (dishonestly) treats her as a “single mum”, entitled to housing, welfare, child benefits, and so on.
Thus is the jizya taken from the filthy kuffar, in compliance with Sharia.
And every wife and her offspring afterwards also gets a single adult’s benefits. Then the whole tribe demands bigger and better housing. Etc.
