Snow go for NYC’s electric garbage trucks that can’t handle winter weather

Don’t count on seeing electric garbage trucks plowing snow from city streets any time soon.

The city Department of Sanitation’s goals to become carbon neutral are clashing with the limits of electric-powered vehicles.

The department aims to switch all 6,000 vehicles in its fleet from gas to electric as part of the state’s goal to reduce emissions by 2040. But city officials say they haven’t found electric garbage trucks that are powerful enough to plow snow.

The department has ordered seven electric rear loader garbage trucks, custom-made by Mack and costing more than $523,000 each, with delivery slated for the spring. Used for curbside trash collection, the department’s current rear loader truck fleet runs on diesel and is outfitted with plows to clear streets during snow season.

But officials say previous electric trucks tested by sanitation have not lasted longer than four hours plowing snow before running out of power, and the new electric trucks will be used for trash collection but not plowing snow.

“We found that they could not plow the snow effectively – they basically conked out after four hours. We need them to go 12 hours,” Sanitation Commissioner Jessica Tisch told the City Council last month. “Given the current state of the technology, I don’t see today a path forward to fully electrifying the rear loader portion of the fleet by 2040.

“We can’t really make significant progress in converting our rear loader fleet until the snow challenges are addressed,” she added.

Some other snowy cities don’t use garbage trucks for snow removal. In Denver, municipal snow clearing is done by smaller light-duty trucks equipped with plows, and some residential streets may not get plowed by the city at all.

But New York City’s commitment to plowing each street puts the sanitation department’s 2,100 collection trucks to work each winter, clearing the equivalent of 19,000 miles of street lanes. The service is one of the mayor’s most important duties. Mayors Bill de Blasio and Michael Bloomberg both faced withering criticism while in office for slow snow removal.

The department’s goal of fully electrifying its fleet goes beyond technological challenges presented by the vehicles themselves. It also requires building charging stations and other infrastructure, Tisch said.

EVs will not charge or operate in low temperatures. They are Useless.

They tried electric vehicles from 1890 – 1830 ….. they did not work then, they don’t work now.
Yes, “technology” has improved ….. so has INTERNAL COMBUSTION technology.
Probably, the best thing we could do is look into the Doble ….. it would run of anything liquid and burnable. It had the power of electric and the convenience of internal combustion.
Just do a search for “electric cars 1890 to 1930” and you will find more than 40 different car companies making electric vehicles

After you buy an EV eventually, the ELITES and GLOBALISTS will continue to fly over the world in their PRIVATE JETS that use kerosene-based fuel. So now tell me, WHO ARE THE REAL MORONS?

Someone I know who works on Helicopters and Airplanes says that they are using regular gas to power them now.

Perhaps that “someone I know who works on Helicopters and Airplanes” can provide some verifiable sources. I have neither read nor seen ANYTHING that even hints at the ability of air vehicles to run on regular gas.

NYC is run by morons! Instead of paying a professional engineer to write the specs for a fleet of electric garbage trucks, they probably got an affirmative action employee to do so. Instead of doing an engineering economic analysis of electric vs. diesel, they went with electric because that is the woke thing to do, even though it makes no engineering sense and will not reduce the overall polution. It seems that their reduction in carbon footprint will be achieved, because a non-functioning truck doesn’t emit CO2, and solar energy is used to naturally melt the snow….eventually. Geniuses!

More ‘liberal’ idiots wasting YOUR hard-earned money!!

When an EV runs out of ‘juice’, you can’t just walk to the nearest station and get a can of ‘juice’ to get you to the filling station ……. you will have to pay for the tow truck to drag your “environmentally friendly” EV to the station ……. and the tow truck will, likely, be DIESEL.

They just do not understand that they are actually exporting their carbon footprint. The amount of material that has to be mined, processed and purified by extremely caustic materials is far beyond comprehension. If it takes 500,000 pounds of raw materials to make one 1,000 pound battery for one Tesla imagine, if you can,how much of the earth has to be destroyed for your effort to save it. Governmental short sightedness to the max.

First, no one has demonstrated that carbon neutrality is necessarily needed, desirable or feasible. Second, it is not yet established that electrics are our best transit option. Third, our electric infrastructure is obsolete and incapable of sustaining an entirely electric industry. Fourth, our electric infrastructure is highly concentrated and vulnerable to war, riot, sabotage and natural disasters. We need a robust and diverse resource future. Fifth, electric vehicles currently require rare earths and extremely expensive inputs, undermining our nations economic miracle machine of cheap, personal transportation that has made truer freedom more possible for more people than ever before.
