For years, the Democrats (and many RINOS) did nothing to deter China while it pillaged the United States. And they fought President Trump for imposing tariffs on China to protect American industry. Now they fly to Taiwan for photo ops ahead of the mid-term elections, risking a major military conflict with China. How reckless. Can someone ask these lawmakers to explain their objectives in Taiwan, since their visit will not lead to any meaningful legislation to weaken China or to strengthen Taiwan?

China to Conduct Additional Drills Around Taiwan Following American Delegation Visit

National Review: China announced more military drills around Taiwan and a CCP spokesperson threatened to “take resolute and strong measures” on Monday after a second American delegation set foot on the island Sunday, weeks after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The delegation was led by Massachusetts Democratic Senator Ed Markey, and included Democratic Representatives John Garamendi and Alan Lowenthal of California, Don Beyer of Virginia, and Aumua Amata Coleman Radewagen of American Samoa, according to the American Institute of Taiwan. The trip was unannounced and the lawmakers are set to leave the island on Monday (National Review). PBS: China accuses the U.S. of encouraging the island’s independence through the sale of weapons and engagement between U.S. politicians and the island’s government. Washington says it does not support independence, has no formal diplomatic ties with the island and maintains that the two sides should settle their dispute peacefully — but it is legally bound to ensure the island can defend itself against any attack. The new exercises were intended to be “resolute response and solemn deterrent against collusion and provocation between the U.S. and Taiwan,” the Defense Ministry said earlier (PBS).

A group of five U.S. lawmakers landed in Taiwan on Sunday in another high-level visit that comes just days after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi enraged China with a trip to the self-governed island.
Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., is leading the unannounced delegation. The group of lawmakers will meet with Taiwanese officials throughout Sunday. China has condemned such visits in the past, but has yet to release a statement regarding Markey’s group.
Other members of the delegation include Democratic Reps. John Garamendi of California, Alan Lowenthal of California, and Don Beyer of Virginia, and Republican Rep. Amata Radewagen of American Samoa.
