Boris Johnson Resigns as Prime Minister

He lost the support of his party.

What a disappointment he turned out to be.

NY POST: Scandal-scarred British Prime Minister Boris Johnson will resign on Thursday, his spokesperson confirmed to The Post.

“The Prime Minister will make a statement to the country today,” a spokesperson said.

The decision follows a string of controversies that plagued trust in his leadership, from “Partygate” lockdown scandal to the cost-of-living crisis to accusations of sexual misconduct among his top leadership.

Johnson, who took office in 2019, will remain as prime minister until a successor is appointed, which could be until fall if his party lets him.

It was not immediately clear Thursday who will replace him as prime minister.

Boris Johnson suffers more ministerial resignations than any PM in modern history

We have entered a third day of cabinet resignations, as Northern Ireland minister Brandon Lewis became one of several to leave their posts on Thursday morning, following a record day for resignations on Wednesday and the sensational exits of Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid on Tuesday.

By Kieran Devine, Daniel Dunford and Ganesh Rao, Sky News, July 7, 2022:

More than 20 ministers have resigned from the cabinet since Tuesday, and the list of overall government resignations over the past few days is now above 50.

Sixteen ministers left Boris Johnson’s government on Wednesday – a record for a single day across the whole of British parliamentary history, and more than during the entire premierships of either Gordon Brown or David Cameron.

Brandon Lewis, Helen Whately and Damian Hinds are among seven of those to have followed suit so far on Thursday.

Since 6pm on Tuesday evening, when then Chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid resigned, 26 ministers have left in total. That number is more than the total that quit during the entire 11-year reign of Margaret Thatcher or during John Major’s seven years as PM.

More junior, non-ministerial Conservative MPs have also quit, meaning more than 50 members of the government have now gone in less than 48 hours.

Boris Johnson’s premiership has now been marked by more ministerial resignations and at a faster rate than all other Prime Ministers in modern history.

Only Theresa May’s time in charge of a Brexit-split Conservative Party comes close to this level of ministerial exits………..
