Memorial Day: Did They Die for Nothing?

On Memorial Day 2021, Old Joe Biden said: “We remember those who gave their all in the service of America, in the service of freedom, in the service of justice.” Yet his administration from the beginning has been dedicated to weakening America, destroying freedom, and perpetuating injustice. If he and his henchmen are able to continue their work, those who have died to defend our nation, those who sacrificed everything for the cause of freedom, will have died in vain.

For America has crossed the Rubicon. Consider, to take just one of many available examples, the Biden administration’s recent establishment of a Disinformation Governance Board. This Board has now, after a firestorm of criticism, been “paused,” but not disbanded or repudiated, as it should have been. There is every possibility that once media attention focuses elsewhere, it will once again be up and running. That is bad enough in itself, and even more ominously, the Board is part of the Department of Homeland Security. This sends the unmistakable signal that what the administration designates as “disinformation” will be treated as a national security issue, with the purveyors of this alleged disinformation being regarded as terrorists.

If you think it’s “disinformation” that the Disinformation Governance Board will be back, consider that two of the most elite of elite Leftists, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, spoke out in favor of restrictions on the freedom of speech just before the Board was announced. Barack Obama recommended that the government adopt procedures for censoring speech based on “whether it strengthens or weakens the prospects for a healthy inclusive democracy.” Hillary Clinton tweeted on April 21, “For too long, tech platforms have amplified disinformation and extremism with no accountability. The EU is poised to do something about it. I urge our transatlantic allies to push the Digital Services Act across the finish line and bolster global democracy before it’s too late.”

Have Obama and Clinton changed their minds, and now accept the importance of the freedom of expression as an essential prerequisite of a free society? Have the Biden wonks who cooked up the Disinformation Governance Board in the first place now realized how inimical to the First Amendment it really is? Of course not.

66,000 Americans died in the American Revolution. 364,000 died fighting to preserve the Union in the Civil War. 116,000 died in World War I. 405,000 died in World War II. 58,000 died in Vietnam. 52,000 died in the misbegotten War on Terror incursions in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They all died, and many others died as well, for the cause of freedom. They died so that Americans through the generations could live free from coercion, free from exploitation, free from enslavement, free from tyranny, free from totalitarianism.

When they died, they left behind widows, orphans, bereaved parents, children and grandchildren never born. They sacrificed everything so that other Americans could enjoy the fruits of freedom.

Did they did so that a political elite class could brazenly sell influence and frame up its opposition and suffer no consequences, because the only people who stand in judgment are members of the same elite class? Did they die so that a cynical and manipulative kleptocracy could perpetuate itself in power long into its dotage, even in dementia and senility feeding at the public trough to fatten itself at the expense of hard-working Americans? Did they die so that an entitled oligarchy could trample upon those freedoms and claim that taking them away was the only way that they could possibly be preserved?

The former chief of Biden’s Thought Police, Nina Jankowicz, already hinted at that last argument. She tweeted that “a HUGE focus of our work, and indeed, one of the key reasons the Board was established, is to maintain the Dept’s committment [sic; is misspelling disinformation?] to protecting free speech, privacy, civil rights, & civil liberties.”

Yes, she actually wrote that the Disinformation Governance Board was established in order to protect free speech. It’s likely that she wasn’t just trying to gaslight the rubes, either. She almost certainly really believed that what she was doing was protecting the freedom of speech by getting rid of all the “disinformation” and “hate” that is supposedly blocking the way of the truth and giving the truth a clear path.

The Disinfo Board isn’t even as controversial as it should be. The groundwork for what the Biden administration is doing has been laid for a long time. Many Americans have already been conditioned to take for granted that speech should be restricted. In October 2019, the Campaign For Free Speech (CFS), a pro-First Amendment advocacy group, released poll results showing that “51% of Americans think the First Amendment is outdated and should be rewritten” and that “48% believe ‘hate speech’ should be illegal.” Yet “hate speech” is an entirely subjective concept, defined by whoever has the power to say what it is.

Is that what the Americans who gave their lives for freedom died for? Did they die so that Leftist authoritarianism could descend upon the United States? Did they die for the forcible silencing of legitimate, non-violent, lawful political dissent? Did they die so that these privileged elites could decide who gets to speak and who gets a platform to be heard, and who does not?

The Biden administration from top to bottom is an insult to Memorial Day, and a slap in the face of those whom we honor on this day. We can only hope that there are still enough patriots in the country to hamstring its efforts in 2022 and drive it entirely from the scene in 2024.
