White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki has offered excuses for President Joe Biden after he was pictured on Saturday night walking through a high-end Georgetown restaurant in Washington DC without a face mask.
She advised reports not to “overly focus on moments in time that don’t reflect overarching policy.”
A mask mandate currently in place in DC requires people to wear a face covering in public indoor settings – which includes restaurants – while not eating or drinking, regardless of their vaccination status.
Ms Psaki also urged people not to let the matter distract from the President’s main concern, which was boosting COVID-19 vaccination rates around the country.

Asked about the incident at her daily briefing on Monday, Ms Psaki referred to a picture of Mr Biden and the First Lady outside the restaurant, Fiola Mare DC, when they had finished eating with their masks still in hand.
“Of course there are moments when we all don’t put masks back on as quickly as we should but I don’t think we should lose… the forest through the trees here in that our objective is to get more people vaccinated,” she said.
“Make sure that schools and companies around the country can put in place requirements to save more lives and keep people safer; and you know, not overly focus on moments in time that don’t reflect overarching policy.”

Ms Psaki was pressed further by the reporter on footage – which has flooded social media – showing the President and his wife walking through the restaurant maskless.
“I think I just addressed,” she snapped back.
Republicans took to Twitter to castigate Mr Biden, sharing photos and videos of the President and First Lady violating DC’s mask mandate.
US Representative Lauren Boebert wrote: “Glad Joe Biden and Dr Jill Ph.D enjoyed their mask free dinner. Now, get rid of the mandate for the rest of us.”
“Rule for thee but not for me” was the caption accompanying many videos, including one posted to the GOP Twitter page.
Mr Biden has previously been supportive of mask mandates as the Delta strain of coronavirus swept across the country.
He announced a vaccine mandate for all federal workers earlier this year or face weekly testing and mandatory masks for those who refuse to get the jab.
