Mark Cuban, Dallas Mavericks Will No Longer Play National Anthem At Home Games: Report

Over the last few years, there’s been a debate on whether players in any American sport should or shouldn’t be forced to stand for the playing of the National Anthem, or allowed to kneel or display some other gesture or form of expression.

By: Forbes, February 9, 2021:

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has decided to take this debate in a different direction, deciding not to play the Anthem at home games this season or moving forward, he confirmed to Tim Cato of The Athletic in a bombshell Tuesday story. It’s believed, per the report, that the Mavs are the first team in North American professional sports to do away with the Star Spangled Banner.

Fans were allowed at Dallas’ American Airlines Center for the first time at Monday’s win over the Minensota Timberwolves and the Anthem wasn’t played before that game just like the 12 regular and preseason games before it this season. Cuban and the team declined further comment on the matter to The Athletic. An NBA spokesperson told The Athletic that this season, teams can run their pregame operations, including the Anthem, as they see fit.

In a June interview on ESPN’s SportsCenter, Cuban said the NBA should change its rule requiring players to stand for the Anthem amidst Black Lives Matter and numerous social justice movements growing in popularity and momentum over the

“Hopefully we’ll re-adapt and hopefully we’ll allow players to do what’s in their heart,” Cuban told ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap, “whether it’s holding an arm up in the air, whether it’s taking a knee. If they were taking a knee and they were being respectful, I’d be proud of them. Hopefully I’d join them.”

A week later, in a June conversation with former NBA player Caron Butler as part of the league’s #NBAVoices series, Cuban discussed the BLM protest movement and how it made him think about the Pledge Of Allegiance he used to say every day at school.

“And going back to it, liberty and justice for all. That’s what this flag is supposed to be for all of us,” he said. “And so when people kneel, when people stand up and protest, it’s specifically what we pledged to do our entire lives at school.”

Now Cuban has apparently decided to do away with the National Anthem altogether, bucking a decades-long trend and potentially opening up the team and the league to another wave of controversy now that this news has been confirmed.
