Boston Removes Lincoln Emancipation Memorial

A statue of Abraham Lincoln with a freed slave appearing to kneel at his feet — optics that drew objections amid a national reckoning with racial injustice — has been removed from its perch in downtown Boston.
Story continues below advertisementWorkers removed the Emancipation Memorial, also known as the Emancipation Group and the Freedman’s Memorial, early Tuesday from a park just off Boston Common where it had stood since 1879.
City officials had agreed in late June to take down the memorial after complaints and a bitter debate over the design. Mayor Marty Walsh acknowledged at the time that the statue made residents and visitors alike “uncomfortable.”
The bronze statue is a copy of a monument that was erected in Washington, D.C., three years earlier. The copy was installed in Boston because the city was home to the statue’s white creator, Thomas Ball.
It was created to celebrate the freeing of slaves in America and was based on Archer Alexander, a Black man who escaped slavery, helped the Union Army and was the last man recaptured under the Fugitive Slave Act.
But while some saw the shirtless man rising to his feet while shaking off the broken shackles on his wrists, others perceived him as kneeling before Lincoln, his white emancipator.
Freed Black donors paid for the original in Washington; white politician and circus showman Moses Kimball financed the copy in Boston. The inscription on both reads: “A race set free and the country at peace. Lincoln rests from his labors.”
More than 12,000 people had signed a petition demanding the statue’s removal, and Boston’s public arts commission voted unanimously to take it down. The statue was to be placed in storage until the city decides whether to display it in a museum.
The memorial had been on Boston’s radar at least since 2018, when it launched a comprehensive review of whether public sculptures, monuments and other artworks reflected the city’s diversity and didn’t offend communities of color. The arts commission said it was paying extra attention to works with “problematic histories.”
Last summer, protesters vowed to tear down the original statue in Washington, prompting the National Guard to deploy a detachment to guard it.

Whites are the real slaves in America. They have to work for almost half the year to pay for blacks, illegals, and others to get free health care, food stamps, housing, and “free basic income” — Welfare. It is the whites who are oppressed, and they should demand reparations.

As there is also a campaign afoot to rename Fanueil Hall after him, it’s pretty much to be expected that his likeness will be what replaces this statue. Honored for throwing rocks at soldiers. We’re just lucky George Floyd didn’t die here.

It was a once long-predominantly Jewish neighborhood, and was still so in the days of my childhood.
It has since long been Boston’s predominantly black neighborhood. It was recently re-named after a 5-year effort by residents to do so, and is now called “Nubian Square”, to pay honor to an ancient Northeastern African region.
If someone today were to ask me for directions to “Nubian Square” I wouldn’t know what the h e l l they were talking about……

3 years agoWisconsin hospital pharmacist arrested for intentionally spoiling hundreds of COVID-19 vaccine doses: police
A suburban Milwaukee pharmacist who allegedly spoiled hundreds of COVID-19 doses by removing them from refrigeration has been arrested, authorities said Thursday.
The now-fired employee’s actions resulted in 57 people receiving ineffective vaccine doses at the Advocate Aurora Health Hospital in Grafton, hospital officials said. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of reckless endangerment, adulterating a prescription drug and criminal damage to property, all felonies, the Grafton Police Department said.
Authorities have not determined a motive. The pharmacist has not been identified.
Hospital officials said the unidentified pharmacist intentionally removed the 57 vials that held 500 doses of the Moderna vaccine from refrigeration overnight on Dec. 24 and left them out for two nights. The doses were returned and then removed again.
Hundreds of doses were discarded as a result. Moderna said there were no health risks associated with spoiled doses, clinical leaders during a virtual news conference Thursday.
A pharmacy technician discovered the vials outside a fridge on Saturday and reported the incident, said Dr. Jeff Bahr, president of the Aurora Health Care Medical Group.

Seems ONE African American guy in Boston was “offended” by the Lincoln statue, and that was all it took for our “woke”, progressive city and state leaders to take down the statue, dedicated to one of our nation’s proudest moments. It now joins Boston’s now-headless statue of Christopher Columbus, which was beheaded during the “social unrest” in the country this past summer.
I fear Boston will NEVER see these monuments to our nation’s history ever again.
