Trump approves selling F-22 Raptor fighter jets to Israel: report

Move said to come as part as efforts to maintain Israel’s qualitative military edge in region

By: i24NEWS, October 31, 2020:

US President Donald Trump’s administration approved the sale of advanced F-22 Raptor fighter jets to Israel, Asharq Al-Awsat reported Friday.

According to the report, the announcement was made by US Defense Secretary Mark Esper during his talks with a high-profile Israeli delegation.

Washington also purportedly gave its nod to the prospect of selling precision-guided munitions to the Israel Defense Forces.

The report comes as the US appears all but set to sell the state-of-the-art F-35 stealth jets to the United Arab Emirates after it normalized its ties with the Jewish state.

On Tuesday, Haaretz reported that Israel sought to procure F-22 Raptors in an effort to maintain its qualitative military edge in the region.

The US reportedly rejected Israel’s previous attempts to acquire the aircraft despite Jerusalem voicing its interest in doing so.

In 2011, the US wound down the production of the model and banned its sales overseas. In 2014, the jets made their first combat sorties as part of the US campaign against the Islamic State terrorist group in Syria.

LMAO. The US cannot sell F-22’s because no more can be built without massive expense. Only 187 or so were made and the US won’t give any of those up. Please correct the article if that’s possible.

Norm, I know it sounds surprising, but it IS possible that Israel wants the F-22

Israel would not need F-22’s if the US would just stop selling advanced jets to Israel’s enemies!

Remember, the MIC $ells to both sides and Trump gets to declare victory in both cases.

That’s my first thought as well!
Does it mean US is going to transfer or sell used F22’s to Israel Defense Force?
I don’t think USAF would willingly give them up, but what do I know?
Maybe it means they will reopen the production line, a massive undertaking if even possible.
I think they tried to mothball the production line in a gigantic hanger somewhere.
Even that is questionable.
I think they had videotape instruction tapes and when someone tried to go over what they had, some items were missing.
Possibly, with a commitment from congress, there would be consideration for a joint, multi country, production contract, but there are certainly a lot of questions raised by the article.
Maybe they will sell the production equipment to Israel and buy back aircraft produced by the Israelis.
Certainly the US could use more than are in inventory, although I think the U S has recently started protype development for a sixth generation fighter using advanced production techniques such as computer printing of parts.
Maybe that’s what the article was about. The F22 needs upgrading to F35 avionics (electronics).

This plane does EVERYTHING and does it better. It is a tool of surgical precision for the kind of precise strikes the Israelis are famous for – the kind of warfare that radically minimalizes loss of civilian lives. USA and Israel= Peace Through Strength.

Careful! Verification needed. This is second hand info from a ME source. The problem is that the F-22 is out of production, with a very limited number still flying. They were mainly superseded by the F-35, that Israel already has, in good quantity.

However the story may still my be true, because the F-22 has 2 engines, which is safer for long-range flights over enemy territory, it has a longer range, it goes faster than the F-35, and it is a bit more stealthy. And those are all things that Israel needs.

Yes, about 5 F-22s would be easy to lend or sell, and Israel could use them over Iran. Not many are needed, because they are almost impossible to shoot down.

Buy them? Nooooo, foreign Aid to Israel from US taxpayers paid for them!

‘US increased military aid to Israel ahead of Trump visit’
PM Benjamin Netanyahu stated that US President Donald Trump had transferred funds to Israel prior to his visit and promised to help maintain the Jewish state’s military edge.

I worked Army Supply for 22 years and military logistics procurements for 10 years. FMS is not paid for by tax payer dollars no matter how you want to spin it. The US gives many foreign governments aid and the only one that really deserves it is Israel!!!! The rest are parasites especially all muslim entities. But I didn’t hear you saying anything about cutting off the foreign aid. US gives out almost $40 billion on aid and you’re claiming that the Israelis’ are getting all of that when we give them $3.8 billion actually? All foreign aid is approved through Congress and controlled by the DOS. Still a lot less that illegal criminals suck off the US in any year. The US benefits greatly from the Israelis than any other foreign power.

So if it happened then you can site the law and the actual transfer information, but you can’t. That’s OK though.

Where are these airframes coming from? Bathouse Barry cancelled the Program a decade ago after LockMart had produced just 187. Far short of the requirement for 750. Are we removing operational – and required – USAF assests for a foreign military sale? This article makes no sense…

would need an act of congress to sell them, and the cost of refurbishing to israeli standards too cost prohibitive.

No, FMS are through DOS with Defense Approval and they only need to notify Congress of the sales.
