Mass looting, mayhem hits Chicago in night of absolute chaos; witnesses post play-by-play videos

BizPac Review| Jon Dougherty | August 10, 2020:

Widespread looting, violence, and chaos rocked downtown Chicago early Monday following a police-involved shooting that left one young suspect wounded, according to local reports.

Crowds also clashed with officers in the Edgewood neighborhood following the shooting after residents were initially led to believe that the victim was a child, Fox32 reported.

Reports noted that some persons in the crowd began hurling objects at Chicago cops who had formed a ring around the crime scene to protect it.

“We do have an officer that was maced by someone in the crowd. We do have an officer that sustained a shoulder injury from the incident with the crowd. One of our vehicles, the windows were shattered by a brick,” Chicago Police Deputy Chief Delonda Tally later told reporters.

Two people in the crowd of about 30 were arrested.

Tally said the trouble started with the crowd after one agitator began whipping people into a frenzy, claiming that the officers shot the suspect a second time after he told them “I’m down.”

The incident began around 2:30 p.m. on Sunday after officers were called to the area of 56th Street and South Aberdeen for a report of a man with a gun. When officers arrived, the suspect began to flee but turned at one point to fire at them.

“During the foot pursuit, the offender turned and fired shots at the officers. The officers then returned, discharging their weapon,” Tally said.

The suspect was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital but his condition, as of this writing, is unknown. The Chicago Tribune reported that Chicago PD recovered the suspect’s alleged weapon at the scene.

As the afternoon gave way to evening, however, the situation began to intensify, leading to widespread riots across the city to include shops and businesses along the Magnificent Mile.

Journalists and observers at the scene documented the chaos, with some noting that police presence was negligible.

“Welcome to Chicago. It’s complete anarchy,” Human Events editor Ian Miles Cheong wrote, tweeting out a clip of looting.

“Absolute chaos in downtown Chicago with more overnight looting and vandalism in the Loop. Appears to be coordinated effort with minimal police presence,” added Ryan Baker, an anchor for CBS Chicago.

Hundreds of people were captured on video looting scores of businesses including Nordstrom, Walgreens, Macy’s, Coach, Gucci and Louis Vuitton.

“Looters broke into a Chicago mall and are looting the place clean tonight,” independent journalist Andy Ngo wrote in a post featuring video taken by a woman who is heard laughing as she records looters.

Several video clips posted to social media show the scale and scope of the looting and chaos — including a Tesla dealership.

“Shots fired at the police. National guard needed ASAP. This can’t go on,” one user wrote.

Eventually, Chicago police moved in and began to disperse the looters.

“We’ve been having a lot of protests. Some are legitimate protests; others have not been legitimate. This right here has been a direct response to one agitator being on the scene, getting people all worked up, without having the full story,” Tally told reporters. “And the only thing we ask people to do is listen.”

Meanwhile, Fox News reports that between Jan. 1 through the end of July, 440 people were killed in the city, with 2,240 people shot, according to Chicago P.D. statistics.

Those figures represent a dramatic increase under the leadership of Mayor Lori Lightfoot. During the first seven months of 2019, there were 290 homicides and 1,480 shootings.
