Portland Residents Say Being Near Protests Feels Like ‘Living in a War’

In the neighborhoods of Portland, where protesters and police have clashed for days with no end in sight, many residents say living near the protests feels similar to “living in a war.”
Story continues below advertisementKGW reported that protesters have targeted the Portland Police Association headquarters located on N. Lombard Street. Oftentimes, these protesters have set fires and committed vandalism, leaving the police with no choice but to respond with tear gas.
The whole exchange is taking its toll on local residents.
“It feels like we’re living in war,” said Marta Guembes, who has lived off N. Lombard for more than 20 years.
Guembes, who supports the Black Lives Matter movement, said she does not support the destructive behavior she had witnessed at the police association headquarters or those responsible for carrying it out.
On Monday night, police declared a riot and arrested 25 people after hundreds of rioters targeted the empty police union building. Some of the rioters set fires outside the building while others pulled down chain-link fence to block traffic.
Police also fired tear gas into the crowd.
Neighbor Gus Stewart said he is ready to see the tear gas dispersal come to an end.
“I definitely don’t like that being so close to the neighborhood,” said Stewart.
“I absolutely am on the side of the peaceful protesters but I don’t understand how the violence helps that message,” added Stewart. “I also don’t think those people are truly a part of the Black Lives Matter movement.”
Police said Monday marked the 22nd night a riot had been declared in Portland since protests began in May.
Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell said the riots are taking a toll on police resources and response time to other matters because when the protests end, the officers are still on duty for other calls.
“When this dissipates at one, two in the morning, [officers] are back out answering calls for service,” said Lovell. “So the same folks that are getting pelted with rocks and motors, they’re the same ones that brush their uniforms off and go take the welfare check, go see about the domestic violence victim and things of that nature.”
Breitbart News reported that the riots are causing a backlog of 100-plus calls for help. Some of the rioters also threatened residents in their homes, taunting them by telling them to “come out into the streets.”

About the RNC Tonight: As we heard on previous nights, we will probably hear the statement, “The USA is the greatest [most successful, richest, etc.] country in history” Is this true? Obviously the extreme Left does not think so. This graph is what these statements are based upon. For the last 10,000 years, human beings lived on about $1 per day, with a life expectancy of about 37. That actually stretches back at least 300,000 years, to the emergence of the first of our human species. Even the ancient Romans lived on $1 day to age 37, on average. Then in about 1800, the industrial and scientific revolutions took off, and now we expect about 3% annual GDP growth, and a life expectancy of about 80. USA GDP per capita is now about $55,000 per year. The USA total GDP is now about $21 trillion, the biggest on earth.
SO, is it ACCURATE to say that the USA is by far the richest country in the history of the human species? Other countries have a higher GDP per capita, but they are small banking countries like Luxembourg. Japan has a higher life expectancy. But nowhere else on earth, ever, has any country had a per capita income of about $55,000 in a country of about 330 million people. NEVER BEFORE. So remember that when you watch tonight.

Severed: YES. Because communism is simply a minor variant of tyrant government. And tyrant government was / is the standard form of government, even among the 196 countries of the UN today. Since tyrants grab all the power and money and subjugate the citizenry, they clamp down on economic liberties, and control the populace though poverty.
And it is economic liberties, delivered though the democratic free-enterprise constitutional republic, that creates wealth, health, and access to happiness.

And I noticed last night that several speakers at the Republican National Convention DID speak about the USA being the greatest country in the world. I would only add that if wealth and health and access to happiness is ‘greatness’, then the USA is objectively the greatest country in the 300,000 history of the human species. And the US and allies saved both Western Civilization and Asian Civilization in WW2 and the Cold War.
and instead of punishing Germany and Japan, we invited them to be partners in peace and trade.

I agree. The Romans and Jihadis were / are tyrant governments that have not changed much in 2,350 years, when Aristotle first described them. Tyrants grab all the power and money, and subjugate the citizenry. After that, they try it on the neighbors, because they are greedy dominant psychopaths. So tyrants cause wars, and the Romans were mainly tyrants, with a smattering of democracy in some things. One third of the Roman Empire population were slaves.

Portland – like Seattle – has become a hell-hole. Again, both my parents lived in this once-beautiful city when they first met in “The City of Roses” in the mid-1930s. My mother emigrated from Canada and my father had moved up from Southern California. It was a wonderful city, beautiful, civilized and held great hope for both of them at that early time in their lives together. Again, thank God they are no longer here to witness this nightmare destruction!

Even if a progressives (assuming individuals are such) are adversely and directly impacted, they still don’t get it. Or they just can’t discern the ugly cause-effect reality of present events, and what led up to the ruinous disorder

The two residents interviewed both say they support BLM – that makes them part of the problem! BLM is a self-defined Marxist organization that exists as an enemy of the state. BLM is NOT a humanitarian organization concerned with equality – it is a humanitarian hoax using the words of compassion to overthrow the U.S. government.

What “peaceful protest?” Since Floyd’s death I have not seen one peaceful anything. blm is a scam. They have taken in over a Billion dollars and not one cent has gone into the black Community.
