Stray Dogs: How ATF Agents Lose Their Guns

They’ve done so at nearly double the rate of their FBI counterparts, often due to simple carelessness.

Several months ago, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel published the results of an expansive investigation into a Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms sting program. The widespread misbehavior on display was both alarming and comical, a characterization that applies equally well to the newspaper’s latest revelation: For unexplained reasons, ATF agents lose their guns with surprising frequency.

“At least 49 guns were lost or stolen nationwide between 2009 and 2013,” the newspaper reports. Perhaps this would be understandable if sophisticated thieves broke into an ATF storage facility and seized a cache of weapons. But the incidents that the newspaper documents suggests a subset of ATF personnel are just careless:

ATF agents have lost track of dozens of government-issued guns, after stashing them under the front seats in their cars, in glove compartments or simply leaving them on top of their vehicles and driving away, according to internal reports from the past five years obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Agents left their guns behind in bathroom stalls, at a hospital, outside a movie theater and on a plane, according to the records, obtained Tuesday by the news organization under the federal Freedom of Information Act.

In December 2009, two 6-year-old boys spotted an agent’s loaded ATF Smith & Wesson .357 on a storm sewer grate in Bettendorf, Iowa. The agent lived nearby and later said he couldn’t find his gun for days but didn’t bother reporting it—until it hit the local newspaper. In Los Angeles in 2011, an agent went out to a bar drinking with other agents and friends, reportedly consuming four alcoholic beverages. The next morning he woke up and realized his ATF-issued Glock was gone.

It was not found.

I’m with you there, but I feel we’re not doing enough to keep guns out of the hands of evil people.

I brought up the gun bans to illustrate the huge disparity (of gun deaths) between nations that ban vs those that don’t, to show more can be done to prevent the loss of innocent lives.

As Mohandjob mentioned earlier, there is also a racial element in the US that exacerbates the problem.

There is no simple solution but my instincts have always been to allow guns for self-defense (support 2nd Amend) to level the playing field (as you mentioned) with the bad guys.

Your angry posts clearly support a case of banning or at least strongly restricting guns to keep them out of the hands of people like you who could potentially snap and shoot a bunch of people. We need psychological examinations as well as criminal bkgd checks.

If you’re a 77 year old, in the UK, and you defend yourself with a flat head screwdriver … You’re arrested, charged with murder, and held without bail for almost five weeks.

Your chart seems to be a strong argument for taking guns out of everyone’s hands, black, latino and white. Yes whites are committing less crimes, but 207k is no small number.

You are also right about the racial divide, we don’t have one here in Canada thankfully, apart from minor incidents. But when you throw guns into the mix, then it just makes things a lot worse.

Still I don’t support a full gun ban. I’ve been really angry at Canada’s laws/regulations on gun-ownership and have often wished we had a 2nd Amend as well. But the gun supply issue is a real problem in America.

And as I was saying it’s hard to deny the stats when comparing nations that banned guns to ones that don’t, they’re generally a lot more safer and peaceful.

Now the UK has a lot of knife-crimes and acid-attacks, both terrible but you have a much greater chance of living through a stabbing then being shot.

If I lived in the UK, would I support guns for self-defense, most definitely. I value my life and decent citizens over evil thugs.

Basically I’m advocating for greater regulation and taking guns off the streets. If any of us know where to get illegal firearms, then so do the cops and they should shut down the black market.
