Poll: Americans Are The Unhappiest They’ve Been In 50 Years

If Americans are miserable, the Democrats are winning. This is the poison fruit of the miserable party – the Democrats. Misery and unhappiness is their objective versus the happy party – the Republicans.

Poll: Americans Are The Unhappiest They’ve Been In 50 Years

By: Yeshiva World News, June 17, 2020 7:00 am

It’s been a rough year for the American psyche. Folks in the U.S. are more unhappy today than they’ve been in nearly 50 years.

Story continues below advertisement

This bold — yet unsurprising — conclusion comes from the COVID Response Tracking Study, conducted by NORC at the University of Chicago. It finds that just 14% of American adults say they’re very happy, down from 31% who said the same in 2018. That year, 23% said they’d often or sometimes felt isolated in recent weeks. Now, 50% say that.

The survey, conducted in late May, draws on nearly a half-century of research from the General Social Survey, which has collected data on American attitudes and behaviors at least every other year since 1972. No less than 29% of Americans have ever called themselves very happy in that survey.

Most of the new survey’s interviews were completed before the death of George Floyd touched off nationwide protests and a global conversation about race and police brutality, adding to the feelings of stress and loneliness Americans were already facing from the coronavirus outbreak — especially for black Americans.

Lexi Walker, a 47-year-old professional fiduciary who lives near Greenville, South Carolina, has felt anxious and depressed for long stretches of this year. She moved back to South Carolina late in 2019, then her cat died. Her father passed away in February. Just when she thought she’d get out and socialize in an attempt to heal from her grief, the pandemic hit.

“It’s been one thing after another,” Walker said. “This is very hard. The worst thing about this for me, after so much, I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Among other finding from the new poll about life in the pandemic:

— The public is less optimistic today about the standard of living improving for the next generation than it has been in the past 25 years. Only 42% of Americans believe that when their children reach their age, their standard of living will be better. A solid 57% said that in 2018. Since the question was asked in 1994, the previous low was 45% in 1994.

— Compared with surveys conducted after President John F. Kennedy’s assassination in 1963 and after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Americans are less likely to report some types of emotional and psychological stress reactions following the COVID-19 outbreak. Fewer report smoking more than usual, crying or feeling dazed now than after those two previous tragedies, though more report having lost their temper or wanting to get drunk.

— About twice as many Americans report being lonely today as in 2018, and not surprisingly given the lockdowns that tried to contain the spread of the coronavirus, there’s also been a drop in satisfaction with social activities and relationships. Compared with 2018, Americans also are about twice as likely to say they sometimes or often have felt a lack of companionship (45% vs. 27%) and felt left out (37% vs. 18%) in the past four weeks.’

What is surprising, said Louise Hawkley, a senior research scientist with NORC at the University of Chicago, was that loneliness was not even more prevalent.

“It isn’t as high as it could be,” she said. “People have figured out a way to connect with others. It’s not satisfactory, but people are managing to some extent.”

The new poll found that there haven’t been significant changes in Americans’ assessment of their families’ finances since 2018 and that Americans’ satisfaction with their families’ ability to get along financially was as high as it’s been over nearly five decades.

Jonathan Berney, of Austin, Texas, said that the pandemic — and his resulting layoff as a digital marketing manager for a law firm — caused him to reevaluate everything in his life. While he admits that he’s not exactly happy now, that’s led to another uncomfortable question: Was he truly happy before the pandemic?

“2020 just fast forwarded a spiritual decay. When things are good, you don’t tend to look inwards,” he said, adding that he was living and working in the Miami area before the pandemic hit. As Florida dealt with the virus, his girlfriend left him and he decided to leave for Austin. “I probably just wasn’t a nice guy to be around from all the stress and anxiety. But this forced an existential crisis.”

Berney, who is looking for work, said things have improved from those early, dark days of the pandemic. He’s still job hunting but has a little savings to live on. He said he’s trying to kayak more and center himself so he’s better prepared to deal with any future downturn in events.

Reimagining happiness is almost hard-wired into Americans’ DNA, said Sonja Lyubomirsky, a psychology professor at the University of California, Riverside.

“Human beings are remarkably resilient. There’s lots and lots of evidence that we adapt to everything. We move forward,” she said, adding that she’s done happiness studies since the pandemic started and found that some people are slightly happier than last year.

Melinda Hartline, of Tampa, who was laid off from her job in public relations in March, said she was in a depressed daze those first few weeks of unemployment. Then she started to bike and play tennis and enrolled in a college course on post-crisis leadership.

Today, she’s worried about the state of the world and the economy, and she wonders when she can see her kids and grandkids who live on the West Coast — but she also realizes that things could be a lot worse.

“Anything can happen. And you have to be prepared,” she said. “Whether it’s your health, your finances, whether it’s the world. You have to be prepared. And always maintain that positive mental attitude. It’s going to get you through it.”

Why be miserable? Vote for Trump and get rid of the misery and the Democrats

We could re-elect the President and take both the House and Senate, and Soros will fund BLM and Antifa to start a war. After that is over, who knows what Hitlery, obozo and the rest of the scum will ask China and Russia to do. My guess is nuclear war, because if they aren’t in control, human life means nothing.

It could absolutely happen. We just don’t know where. The most likely place will be DC if the evidence is there that the President will win overwhelmingly. Look for a huge exodus of democrats just before it happens.NYC could be a possibility because they could take down the stock exchange and cause a major panic. They could also set off an EMP somewhere.

The President and everyone that works for him has to really be paying attention the next few months. I’m sure the democratic scum and the Chinese were hoping the virus would take him out. That didn’t work.

Trump was always a liberal Democrat until he decided to run for POTUS, then he changed over to the GOP. After he signed the first big omnibus bill, shortly after his inauguration, he said, “Never Again!” Yet he has signed 4 more BIGGER ones since then and has another one in the wings waiting to be signed! When government prints money the way it’s doing with all these bills, it devalues the dollar. Have you noticed prices going up on everything? I sure have! And if you live on a small fixed income, like I do, and can only afford 1 meal a day, it starts getting pretty scary.

Prices went up on things because of the covid 19 virus. Prices also go up for stupid reasons. A supermarket near me raised prices on things years ago because people were making themselves salads and then not paying for them. Imagine what things would have been like if the Republicans had found someone to conspire with to release a deadly virus when obozo was in office like the democrats did with the Chinese. I live on a fixed income also. I’m sorry you can only afford one meal a day. That sucks. I’m eating a lot less expensively. I’m sure that you are too. I’m not happy with everything that this President has done. Some of it was out of necessity to clean up the disgusting mess of obozo. You may not like this President, but he is trying to put Legal American Citizens and this country first, as opposed to the last clown who put Illegal Criminal Invaders, Illegal muslim invaders and other countries ahead of this one. Things have been a lot better for me with President Trump than they were for 8 years of obozo. Those were 8 years of a neverending nightmare, and it wasn’t just for me. It was for a lot of people. I hope things get better for you. After the last 2 weeks of absolute lawlessness(and it seems to be continuing) people like you and me are in a lot of trouble.

The WuFlu was definitely part of the reason prices went up, to cover all the money printing that they were sending to everyone! I contacted my Congressman and told him exactly what I thought of having money put into my checking account that I neither worked for or asked for. I was absolutely outraged!! Can I use the money? Sure, but I don’t want money from a bankrupt government just because they don’t know how else to battle the WuFlu!! And yes, it DID cause prices to skyrocket, due to printing $3 TRILLION!! Prices of mobile homes in parks have nearly DOUBLED because of the feckless handling of money in our government!

Just speculating, but the Progressives are in panic mode. They have tried everything to bring Trump down. They are out of control with the rioting, the cancel culture, the Covid scam and the attempt to bring down the economy, and the violence.

It wouldn’t take much for China or the Muslim Brotherhood to smuggle in some depleted nuclear material. Remember the device that was exploded at the Marathon a few years back.

I wouldn’t put anything past these crazies.

Agreed. It hurt tremendously that 60+ Republicans didn’t run again(in the House) in 2018. Throw in the voter harvesting in California, where 7 Republicans had won until mysterious bags of ballots started showing up.

Didn’t they realize they were hurting the nation by not running? It would sure seem so! That being said, however, when we did have the house, nothing was done about the voter fraud or other things they could have cleaned up like DACA.

Only Democrats “become unhinged,” but we WILL push for real answers – from the people who can get to the bottom of it and solve the problem. What we WON’T do is go on all the 3-letter TV shows and whine about it, we will get to work at solving the problem. That’s what Patriots do!

I love your answer, Dorrie, AND I agree 100%, but in reality, LIBERALS DO NOT WANT TO TALK about the issues. THEY WANT IT THEIR WAY OR NO WAY AT ALL. We see that in Seattle and Minneapolis right now.

BLM got a permit in our SMALL city up here and our community found out about it and over 100 citizens came out and surrounded the town square and the perimeter where they were to protest, with their open-carry right to bear arms and it was PEACEFUL…..but,….it didn’t go so well for BLM. A lot of people, I will presume LIBERALS, DIDN’T LIKE that they could not create havoc. So, within the 1st 30 minutes (we were there way ahead of the protest people), they just started to leave. The 2 speakers they had, just walked away. We stayed for about an hour just to make sure BLM didn’t destroy anything and a few stayed later that evening and it went perfect!

IT WAS A BUST FOR BLM. THAT IS THE WAY TO DO IT. Someone asked me why I had to carry my gun to the protest and I told them TO KEEP YOU, ME, AND MY NEIGHBORS SAFE. NOT ONE INCIDENT HAPPENED. THAT IS HOW TO DO IT! NO GUNS WERE EVER DRAWN BY ANYONE.

I think SOON Americans will just have to take back this country the hard way. I DON’T LIKE IT. I DON’T WANT THAT. BUT, THAT MAY HAVE TO HAPPEN. Personally, I would like to see 7 million Patriots storm Congress and yank them all out with ‘YOU ARE FIRED”. Then put them all in paddy wagons and make them stand trial for the dirty deeds they have done to America(ns), but I guess that won’t happen right now, probably when I am dead and gone will Americans get a backbone.

So, I will watch the circus as it evolves………….

BREAKING: DEMOCRATS SUED TO STOP TRUMP RALLY

Can you believe it?

Radical Democrats actually SUED to stop my re-election campaign’s Trump MAGA Rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Saturday.

First, they support tens of thousands of ANTIFA THUGS DESTROYING our communities.
And now, they try to COVID-SHAME us for holding rallies at only a fraction of the people?

I DON’T THINK SO. The Liberals have ALWAYS been trying to take me down, and more importantly, they’ve been trying to take YOU down.

They hate me. They hate you. They hate rallies and it’s all because they hate the idea of MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!

We are halfway through the month and now the Left has tried to SILENCE US, I want to make a statement SO LOUD that even the Fake News media won’t be able to ignore us.
