Trump orders law enforcement to arrest memorial vandals under federal act with up to 10-year sentence

Story continues below advertisement

By Washington Examiner, June 23, 2020

President Trump said he has authorized federal law enforcement to arrest those caught vandalizing memorials and charge them under the Veterans’ Memorial Preservation and Recognition Act.

“I have authorized the Federal Government to arrest anyone who vandalizes or destroys any monument, statue or other such Federal property in the U.S. with up to 10 years in prison, per the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act, or such other laws that may be pertinent,” the president tweeted Tuesday morning.

“This action is taken effective immediately, but may also be used retroactively for destruction or vandalism already caused. There will be no exceptions!” he added.

Several historical monuments and war memorials have been defaced or destroyed by vandals over the past few weeks. On Monday night, protesters targeted a statue of Andrew Jackson located in Lafayette Park across from the White House. Trump hinted that he would be using the Veterans’ Memorial Preservation and Recognition Act as protesters attempted to topple the statue and vandalize St. John’s Episcopal Church for a second time.

“Numerous people arrested in D.C. for the disgraceful vandalism, in Lafayette Park, of the magnificent Statue of Andrew Jackson, in addition to the exterior defacing of St. John’s Church across the street. 10 years in prison under the Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act. Beware!” he wrote.

The Veterans’ Memorial Preservation and Recognition Act is a federal law that was passed in 2003. The legislation states that anyone caught attempting to “injure or destroy” a “structure, plaque, statue, or other monument” commemorating “the service of any person or persons in the armed forces of the United States” that is located on public property can face fines or a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Protests against police brutality and racial injustice have taken place throughout the U.S. since the death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old black man who died after a police officer knelt on his neck for several minutes during an arrest. Some of the protests have devolved into riots that have featured arson, looting, and vandalism.

Democrat Lives Matter — or do they?
Of the top-ten “most dangerous cities” all have Democratic mayors.
Those cities are
Detroit, St. Louis, Oakland,
Memphis, Birmingham, Atlanta,
Baltimore, Stockton, Cleveland, Buffalo.
THESE are Democrat success stories, because the Democrats are re-elected, and the populace is easily exploited and subjugated.

…but the rest of the truth is that both parties are doing absolutely nothing…like uninvolved bystanders..

Yes but things have been worse that way. After the Civil War, Missouri was full of violence between die-hard Democrat Confederates, and Republican Unionists.

But peace and good government eventually prevailed. The USA is very resilient, because it has many self-correcting social systems. The Founders designed it that way.

In this case we MUST get those cities out of Democrat hands. Once again, they refuse to give up.

Some are buying into the Soros BLM BS… Floyd was a thug… he had worked with the cop as a bouncer at a Latin nightclub for a long period of time and they both knew each other and hated each other..

So, there should already be several dozen arrests for crimes committed under this Act. Has there been any. The police could surround the entire CHAZ/CHOP (or whatever the f**k they call it) city and arrest everyone under this statute. Why isn’t this being done at this very moment.

That law, if I am not mistaken, applies to statues on federal property. Such as many, in DC, that are on federal property … parks, etc.

Trump didn’t have to order that law to be enforced. It is the responsibility of law officers to have done so and continue to do so.

That would not take directive from the president.

Why hasn’t it been done? The Veteran’s Memorial Preservation Act has only been on the books, since 2003. You’d think that law enforcement would know about it by now.

No Justice. No Peace.

So other statues can still be destroyed.

There are laws against that, as well. The question remains, why have NONE of those laws been enforced?

Since 2003. Wonder how many convictions since then. That’s ok, I’m sure under the renewed attention to this law, we should see convictions by, say, 2082?

2083 may be a bit ambitious. More than likely, some time between 2013 and 2121.

That’s not been what I have been hearing. People are disgusted at the inaction. I am referring to staunch fellow Trump supporters. Sure they will still vote for him, there is no choice, but with less enthusiasm.

Which shows just how fickle, just how fragile much of the voting public truly is, just how much comparable to Olive Oyl they are. Just how much short memories and attention spans, and how susceptible they are to being seduced by a Bluto.

How else could they be after suffering an education system that hasn’t taught either history or Civics for decades? That plus a dumbed down “news” media spewing lies 24/7 doesn’t encourage thinking.

i know it’s hard for folks to understand where the potus is coming from but the thing is , he is trying to stay within constitutional boundaries not be a god king like obama. It’s why he left the virus crap up to the states and the same goes for the riots and statue destruction. States Rights and all. Now if this crap turned into a full blown insurrection and Revolution then he would move in the military whether his generals liked it or not. Just stick with it for now . It’s our final chance to set things right with having to bring the thunder on the scumbags. of course we just might have to go that route in the end just to save the Republic.

I disagree. President Trump has very shrewdly allowed States rights to trump Federal Law. It is so the people can understand the useless trash that they the people have elected to office. Pray for President Trump as he alone is standing in the breach of the Wall. America will reelect him in 2020 if it wishes to survive as a nation.
The Democrats are Communists and would turn the United States into Seattle. Wake UP!

How many DEM Governors and mayors will allow that?
How will law enforcement get in to arrest them?
Will they be arresting DeBlazio too who wants more statues removed or do they have to catch his thugs in the act?
How will they find out who have already vandalized and destroyed other statues?

That’s a good idea, have to prosecute them at the federal level, as the Democrat governors won’t do anything about it.

THAT LAW HAS BEEN ON THE BOOKS FOR DECADES JUST LIKE OTHER LAWS THAT HAVE BEEN IGNORED TO THE DETRIMENT OF OUR NATION. IMMIGRATION LAWS ARE A GOOD EXAMPLE. MOST HAVE JAIL SENTENCES IN EXCESS OF 5 YEARS, IF FEDERAL GUN LAWS WERE ENFORCED MOST OF THE GANG BANGERS IN THE COUNTRY WOULD BE IN THEIR 60’S AND 70’S WHEN THEY FINALLY GOT OUT OF PRISON. BUT ALAS THE FEDS UNDER CLINTON, BUSH AND OBAMA REFUSED TO ENFORCE THE LAWS OF THE LAND. AND FOR WHAT ??? MORE POLITICAL POWER ??? MONEY ???? WHY PASS LAWS WHEN NO ONE ENFORCES THEM ON KNOWN CRIMINALS !!!!! LIKE SNOOP DOG, 4 TIME FELON ARRESTED IN NY CITY A FEWS YEARS AGO FOR GUN AND DRUG CHARGES. NEVER SERVED A DAY IN JAIL YET WALKED AROUND THE WHITE HOUSE WIT DA PREZ SMOKING DA GANJA. IF YOU OR I HAD DONE THAT WE’D STILL BE IN ATICA PRISON UP STATE.

What ever happened to old fashioned vandalism? Never mind.
This only protects Vet statues on federal property.
Other monuments or statues are fair game.

TEN years each plus fines IF they have any money. NO messing around. OR better still as the Israelis do in serious cases (they have to get a court order) blow up their houses.

Memorial vandals should be sentenced to repairing the damage they’d caused, no matter how long it takes or how much it costs. BTW – all of them don’t need to be caught – the ones stuck with all the work will rat out their comrades.
