Defense Secretary Mark Esper Orders National Guard in D.C. to Disarm, Wear Soft Caps Instead of Helmets

WASHINGTON, DC – JUNE 06: Two members of the National Guard walk past at the World War II Memorial as protests against police brutality and racism take place on June 6, 2020 in Washington, DC. This is the 12th day of protests with thousands of people descending on the city …

By: Kristina Wong, Breitbart, 6 Jun 2020:

Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday ordered National Guard troops in Washington, DC, to disarm and wear soft caps instead of helmets, an official told Breitbart News on Friday afternoon.

The official said the president told Attorney General Bill Barr that he wanted the National Guard to be armed so that they could protect themselves from rioters and looters coming in to the city, but Esper on his own told the D.C. National Guard leadership to take the weapons of National Guardsmen who were coming in from other states.

“He’s not really on board with what the president is trying to do,” the official said.

The official said Esper also on his own directed the National Guard in D.C. to wear soft caps instead of helmets. Breitbart News queried the Pentagon chief spokesman Jonathan Hoffman on Friday afternoon, but he did not respond by deadline.

Photos on social media showed National Guardsmen in D.C. wearing soft caps:

The National Guard said in response to a query, “Guardsmen supporting the civil disturbance are unarmed.”

The move comes a day before there are expected to be hundreds of thousands of protesters taking part in demonstrations in Washington, DC, on Saturday.

Protests in recent days have been largely peaceful, but the president had fully-activated the National Guard in D.C. and requested help from other states after several days of looting, defacing national monuments, and the burning of a historic church just one block away from the White House. Dozens of Secret Service agents were also injured. Violence was also engulfing other major cities across the nation.

The Washington Post also reported that Esper disarmed National Guardsmen activated in D.C.:

“Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper made the decision to disarm the guard without consulting the White House, after President Trump ordered a militarized show of force on the streets on the streets of Washington to quell demonstrations that were punctured by an episode of looting Sunday, two senior administration officials said. Trump had encouraged the National Guard to be armed.”

A spokeswoman for Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy said McCarthy “directed” the disarming of the National Guard in D.C., but did not dispute that the order came from Esper.

“Earlier this week, Mr. McCarthy directed the National Guard to disarm,” said Army Lt. Col. Audricia Harris.

She said only roughly a dozen in the district were previously armed, and that they carried unloaded weapons with ammunition on their body.

Esper is reportedly on thin ice with Trump after the Pentagon secretary announced during a press conference on Wednesday that he did not support invoking the Insurrection Act, which would allow active-duty forces to act in law enforcement roles.

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that Esper had not consulted the president before making the announcement, to her knowledge. She also said that the president has the “sole” authority to invoke the Insurrection Act.

Trump has reportedly asked advisers whether he should replace Esper. Sen. Tom Cotton’s (R-AR) name has been floated. He has advised the president to use military troops to restore order in cities that have seen riots in response to the death of George Floyd.

This is as close to sedition as I can imagine. The question really is, WHY DID TRUMP NOT INSTANTLY FIRE HIM?

Javanka and Esper should go. If people had attacked and the National Guard had been hurt or killed and something had happened to the White House, the situation would have been worse. We are lucky(for the moment) that it didn’t get worse. Certainly Esper was not listening to the knuckle dragging mayor of DC, who wanted the White House burned down.

As you know the problem is we can’t depend on luck. Esper is a lobbyist. He should never have been put in that position but the swamp was all for him. Esper was confirmed quickly with no issues now we know why….

While Trump was in Maine, Defense Secretary Mark Esper on Friday ordered National Guard troops in Washington, DC, to disarm and wear soft caps instead of helmets

The president told Attorney General Bill Barr that he wanted the National Guard to be armed so that they could protect themselves from rioters and looters coming in to the city.

The National Guard said in response to a query, “Guardsmen supporting the civil disturbance are unarmed.”

( They are obligated to follow the Secretary of Defense unless Trump, the Commander in Chief, over rules him.)

White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that Esper had not consulted the president before making the announcement, to her knowledge. She also said that the president has the “sole” authority to invoke the Insurrection Act.

(Some insubordination going on?)

Trump has reportedly asked advisers whether he should replace Esper. Sen. Tom Cotton’s (R-AR) name has been floated. He has advised the president to use military troops to restore order in cities that have seen riots in response to the death of George Floyd.

https://www.breitbart.com/politics/2020/06/06/defense-secretary-mark-esper-orders-national-guard-in-d-c-to-disarm-wear-soft-caps-instead-of-helmets/

(Will Defense Secretary Esper order his armed Secret Service protection submit to being disarmed too? I don’t remember him objecting to his armed protection. Does Esper want to be defenseless too?)

The Dan Bongino video is a really good one.

The national guard didn’t need their weapons, did they? The Democrats would absolutely love to see the national guard or any other military forces used against civilians by federal order, but they don’t want to give that order themselves. They don’t even let the police do their job. They even appoint Democrat police leadership who help them advance a political agenda instead of protecting and serving the people.

We’re being coaxed into a military response to a bunch of useful idiots with their pants at their knees and useful idiots who don’t know the difference between their enemies and their allies. We elect people who turn cities into thug factories and then won’t let the police do their job. The people are part of this problem, so they have to have their noses rubbed in the mess that they got conned into supporting for many decades.

Good points. The forces Trump organized were just right. Not too aggressive, and it got the job done. AND as always, rioting dies out by itself.

The citizens of the USA need to get off their knees. We’ve been so focused on making a devalued dollar that we forgot to keep an eye out for the traitors in high places who made the dollar so much more important than anything else. We forgot to trust our own common sense instead of “expert” liars. We let our old enemy infiltrate every position of influence and boil us slowly so we didn’t realize we were being cooked.

Yes [although science has proved that the ‘boiled frog’ story is false]. When it gets too hot, the frog jumps out. Of course they do. And we will jump out also. The Dems can see that, and they are cooking themselves, trying to stop their own catastrophic failures.

IMO, nothing is absolute in a war because unpredictable or unexpected things can happen, and this is a war. We better realize we’re still in the pot and if we let the Democrats take the next election they’ll put a lid on the pot very quickly.

Sorry Felix, I disagree [slightly] on this one. Trump knew the riots were fizzling, so he softened his approach. Maneuver warfare again, Trump style. Please remember that riots are mainly emotional, not rational.

In the Ukraine revolution, snipers shot 70 protesters in the main Kiev square, and that totaled the presidency. He fled to the airport the next day. Compared to Covid-19, 70 casualties are not many, but the people got really mad at that. Trump was avoiding such a mistake.

Very disappointing that you would side with the swamp. If Trump knew it was fizzling out, Trump would not have ORDERED the National Guard in there and he meant armed. Esper over ruled him while Trump was out of town.

It doesn’t matter to me whether riots are emotional of not. Would you cave to an emotional child too? Corporal punishment works well. Naughty children will escalate if they can get away with it. When there is a consequence they weigh that against the action to be taken.

I don’t care about Ukraine. We are not like Ukaine. What I do know is you can’t embolden these people and that is what is going on.

Here’s what a looter had to say. They do it bcause they can! You don’t understand people!

Looters who hit L.A. stores explain what they did:
‘Get my portion!’
(because they are allowed to.)
By Maya Lau, Alejandra Reyes-Velarde, Matt Hamilton 6/6/20

The young man flanked the shattered entry of a ransacked CVS in Santa Monica, where people had swept the shelves clean of everything from diapers to detergent. The man, who did not cover his face, admitted he was a looter. He did not apologize.

“We’ve got no other way of showing people how angry we are,” he said.

Out of the store ran another young man, this one holding a carton of eggs. He grabbed a friend and started scanning the street for targets: police cars. “We’re doing it because we can,” he said.

Over in Van Nuys, a teenage boy standing outside a ravaged Skechers store held up a backpack. That was all he took. But it was enough, he said.

“We are just trying to provide and take up the opportunity that we are getting right now. That’s all.”

THIS has me really pissed off! Trump was out of town when DEFENSE Secretary Epser undermined him. Why didn’t someone tell him? If they did, why didn’t he over rule him? Why isn’t Esper fired. Trump can appoint a replacement till one is confirmed? I just can’t be a blind apologist. HE campaigned on being the President of “law and order”, what happened?

Pence is even worse. He is weak. He s useful for appeasing people where Trump clashes with DEMS and others like them. Pence hides at the first sign of trouble. He was practically on his knees for George Floyd.

Don’t confuse style over substance. Pence is an establishment type with no substance. I can only hope Trump gets back to substance even if his style is more brusque. I would sit home if Pence was dumb enough to run. He would be like another Bush and capitulate to the globalist agenda.

YOU ARE FIRED, ESPER!
……We, the PEOPLE of the United States of America

What point is there to send in Military IF THEY ARE NOT ARMED? Like Kent State in Ohio in the 60s, when Gov. Rhodes sent in the Natl Guard (I WAS THERE!), IT WILL TAKE JUST 1 ROCK FOR A PROTESTOR TO THROW AT THEM AND THEN WHAT? Ask the protestors PLEASE DON’T DO THAT?

ARM THE NATIONAL GUARD AND PROTESTORS WILL EITHER BACK OFF AND LIVE TO FIGHT ANOTHER DAY, OR MOVE FORWARD AND GET SHOT.

It’s insane to have them stand there unarmed and watch as “law enforcement”. You never know how out of control people will get in these situations. Up in NY, two lawyers had bombs in their cars! Thankfully they were arrested and the federal government stepped in to rescind their bail and incarcerate them. As lawyers they should know the price of what they are doing.

This is setting a bad precedent and next time they will up the violence knowing they can get away with that. Baltimore had law enforcement stand down and it was a mess. We can’t be alike the DEMS and appease them and give them a recess time for violence and mayhem or we are no better then DEMS. As a “law and order” President appeasement without at least firing DEFENSE Secretary Esper is not acceptable. I don’t want a mockery of law enforcement.

The keyword is peaceful. You shouldn’t compromise to appease savages.

Before he leaves, he should put in an urgent request for a bullet proof vest and helmet. He just might need these when he loses his Secret Service detail.

Now, will he be fired, ask to resign or be fired, or simply resign? Either way it will be him falling on his sword.

It was inconceivable that a cabinet officer – in this case Mark Esper – could go to the press and undermine the POTUS – and remain in his job – until now.

I can’t think of another president who wouldn’t have fired such a person immediately.

Then again, Trump hesitated endlessly about firing Sessions – and he got Rod Rosenstein and the Mueller witch hunt for his trouble.

Trump has got to pull himself together, and stop obsessing about the election.

The left will blame him for a rainy day, as will the media – so he might just as well LEAD.

He can start by firing Esper, and restoring order.

Unfortunately, I don’t think he has it in him.
