Supreme Court throws out convictions of New Jersey officials in Bridgegate scandal

By CNN.com, May 7, 2020

The Supreme Court threw out fraud convictions on Thursday against two New Jersey officials involved in the “Bridgegate” political scandal, the George Washington Bridge traffic jam that rocked the administration of then-Gov. Chris Christie.

Writing for a unanimous court, Justice Elena Kagan said that “for no reason” other than “political payback” the aides “used deception” to cut access lanes from Fort Lee, New Jersey, to the bridge.
The move “jeopardized the safety of the town’s residents,” Kagan wrote, but concluded that “not every corrupt act by state or local officials is a federal crime.”

Bridget Anne Kelly, who served as an aide to Christie, and Bill Baroni, the deputy director of the Port Authority, were convicted for their roles in the scandal and ultimately sentenced to 13 and 18 months in 2017. Currently out on bond, they asked the Supreme Court to reverse their convictions.

The ruling is the latest example of the court narrowing the type of conduct by public officials that can be considered fraud under federal law.
In recent years, the court has decisively narrowed the government’s ability to charge public officials with federal crimes for corruption offenses, most notably in 2016 after former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell took hundreds of thousands of dollars from a businessman who wanted the governor to intervene on his behalf with state officials to benefit his business.
“Once again, the Supreme Court has thrown out federal criminal convictions of public officials who, by their own admission, abused their power for corrupt and illegitimate purposes,” said Steve Vladeck, CNN Supreme Court analyst and professor at the University of Texas School of Law.
“The harder question is whether Congress will respond to rulings like this one by expanding the scope of these laws, or whether we’re going to end up with a world in which criminal liability for such nefarious conduct depends upon the color of one’s collar,” Vladeck added.
Christie’s aides argued that they were wrongly convicted and that prosecutors overreached when they charged them under various federal fraud statutes.
Kagan added that the aides’ scheme did not aim to obtain money or property, and therefore they could not have violated wire fraud laws.

Don’t forget, Covid-19 is war. A new alien entity has declared war on the human species and is trying to kill us all.
And this IS NOT the last virus war. Inside the current Covid-19 war, another one looms, because nations now know how potent pandemics can be. A nuclear war with Russia could kill very roughly 75 million Americans, but a virus could kill everyone. Without bomb damage. And China has just figured that out. So has Iran, and Russia, and many other US enemies. And a sneak virus attack has ‘plausible deniability’ where the USA might not know where the virus came from, or if it was deliberate. Trump is right to prepare us for virus warfare.

This article does not take into account the effects of a nuclear winter. A nuclear winter would certainly occur if the US and Russia went to war (or indeed if any two countries engaged in nuclear war), and it would result in the extermination of more than 99% of the human species. This phenomenon was not known during the early years of the cold war, but it has been known and studied since the 1980s. I suggest taking a look at a recent book by Daniel Ellsberg called The Doomsday Machine. Ellsberg was a nuclear war planner who worked at RAND in the 1950s and 60s. It’s really startling how many times we have come close to total annihilation and how unsecure our nuclear weapons systems are.

Thanks for your comment

RE: “nuclear winter”. That is a theory that has never been proven. We do not know what total nuke mortalities would be in a nuclear war. The main secondary effect would probably be mass starvation, from destructions of the food supply chains. But neither the USA nor Russia aim to obliterate the human species, the way some viruses do.

Was Ellsberg another PRETEND engineer that could NEVER pass a PE exam?

He’s an economist actually. He’s a very important figure in American history. He is most famous for releasing the Pentagon Papers in 1971 and is widely considered to be the original whistleblower. Your not knowing who he is speaks volumes to your ignorance of American history.

That was my point, little PRETEND engineer. Obviously, your exceedingly low level of education was, once again, glaringly exposed.

What, pray tell, would Ellsberg know about the after-effects of a nuclear war? As much as someone that FAILED their PE exam THREE TIMES, such as willy nye, about “science”.

Are you truly THAT stupid?

Like I said, the nuclear winter phenomenon first hypothesized in the 80s, not the 60s. Furthermore, there is no greater threat to humanity than a nuclear winter. What other threat would literally wipe out 99% of the human population?

The “Doomsday Machine,” hence nuclear war, was indeed being talked about in the 60’s.

Nuclear war has been discussed since the 40s when the first atomic bomb was created. But the prospect of a nuclear winter wasn’t known or analyzed until the 80s.

And, to this very day, it is an unproven theory which has been laughed at by anyone in the field. A forkin’ “economist” produces a fantasy film.

Only a PRETEND engineer could be mentally challenged to accept anything along those lines.

You poor, poor little thing. I truly pity you.

It looks as if unelected U.S. officials used U.S. taxpayer money to create the Fauci Virus.
When are we going after Fauci and the other traitorous murderers?

Trump awaits the right time and place. People don’t realize it, but Trump has always had excellent dirt diggers, even when he was in real estate. In big profile properties, like casinos, politics and profiling were key, like in Vegas, and Trump was excellent at exposing certain weaknesses in his competitors. He did that with Steve Wynn in Vegas, and with Obama’s birth certificate, and now. We the people ‘suddenly find’ exposed material on the Web about Trump’s enemies, and these revelations come from ‘sources’.

But unlike the defamations that the Dems generate, Trump’s things are always true. E.g.,Trump: “I am being wiretapped.” It was true, big time. So therefore who is dumping dirt about Fauci? And why is the dirt always true, and timely? It’s not innuendo and smears, it’s just facts. And after those dirt dumps pile up and up, until we can’t stand it anymore, Trump fires the bad guy, or sues him, or makes sure he never works again. And then we are all relieved.

The blogger ‘True Pundit’ used to work for Trump on dirt digging. And True Pundit is always right.

True Pundit knew what was on that computer before anyone else, and he broke the story. And honestly Ach, it may be better that we don’t know everything that is on there. I have glimpsed a bit of it, and I think, “Hell hath no bottom.”

Thanks. I’ve been reading about how, fifteen years ago, chloroquine phosphate was claimed as a cure for corona viruses. And, that the developer of the Fauci virus knew such.
That article was attached to the one about the murder of Bing Liu, who was supposedly on the verge of a cure for Covid-19.
Fascinating stuff.

Now don’t worry, Mohandjob. Barr is on the case. He just has to talk to a few people, play some bagpipes, form a strategy, talk to a few more people. So, maybe by 2103 he should be able to bring charges. How’s that for efficient.

An atheist firmly believes that there is no god(s).

Another case illustrating the expansion of the criminal law by the DOJ/FBI tyrants to criminalize actions that may at worst be civil offenses and at best simply bad behavior. Judges are supposed to protect the rights of defendants but they rarely perform this vital function. There has been a melding of the federal judiciary and the DOJ that must be undone if basic constitutional rights are to be restored.
