Trump to ‘suspend immigration into the United States’ by executive order amid coronavirus

Fox News, April 21, 2020:

Story continues below advertisement

President Trump announced late Monday he will soon sign an executive order “to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States,” in what appeared to be a drastic escalation of his efforts to fight the coronavirus pandemic and boost the economy.

The declaration came hours after U.S. equity markets plunged, with oil prices turning negative for the first time in history. Also on Monday, three states — Georgia, Tennessee, and South Carolina — revealed plans to begin reopening some businesses.

“In light of the attack from the Invisible Enemy, as well as the need to protect the jobs of our GREAT American Citizens, I will be signing an Executive Order to temporarily suspend immigration into the United States!” the president tweeted.

The precise contours of the president’s planned executive order were not immediately clear. The White House did not immediately elaborate on Trump’s tweeted announcement.

Politico reported that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) was still working out the details of the executive order, and that an exemption for temporary guest workers, including farm workers, was under consideration.

A top DHS official told the outlet that “22 million unemployed Americans and counting due to COVID-19″ had prompted Trump to act.

Due to the pandemic, almost all visa processing by the State Department, including immigrant visas, has been suspended for weeks.

Rep. Paul Gosar, R-Arizona, applauded the planned executive order, and suggested a total immigration suspension should continue indefinitely. “Thank you, @realDonaldTrump!” he wrote. “All immigration to the United States should halt until every American who wants a job has one!”

“Given tens of millions of Americans are out of work right now and we’re battling a virus that spreads through human-to-human transmission I am dying to hear one coherent argument against this,” wrote Spectator USA’s Washington editor Amber Athey.

Rep. Don Beyer, D-Va., meanwhile, said Trump was looking for “someone to blame for his own failure.”

CORONAVIRUS TIMELINE SHOWS MULTIPLE FLIP-FLOPS BY JOURNOS, DEMS, GOP

“Immigration has nearly stopped and the US has far more cases than any other country,” Beyer wrote, without adjusting his statistic to consider the larger population in the United States. “This is just xenophobic scapegoating.”

Added Sen. Kamala Harris, D-Calif.: “Trump failed to take this crisis seriously from day 1. His abandonment of his role as president has cost lives. And now, he’s shamelessly politicizing this pandemic to double down on his anti-immigrant agenda. Enough, Mr. President. The American people are fed up.”

When the entire nation was shut down, CDC guidance and all, wasn’t then when we should have put a cessation to ALL immigration? Why did the president wait so long?

Who knows. Maybe he’s just cautious. He knows more about why he waited than I could know.

I’m just glad he finally did it. Poor Mike Lee. All those Indians from India won’t be coming here. His “fast track” was ended.

No … those from injia’s sunny clime will still be coming. This only deals with those applying for Resident Alien Status. And, most of them are already here and working. This administration will keep bringing in H1-A and H1-B applicants … along with a host of others that take American jobs.
The American worker has been sold down the river, once again.

Trump Exempts Fortune 500’s Visa Workers from Immigration Curb
BY NEIL MUNRO 21 Apr 2020

These white-collar reporters did not ask Trump why he exempted the corporate visa workers from taking jobs away from other white-collar Americans. One reporter, however, asked him if he is using the coronavirus epidemic to fulfill a campaign promise to reduce legal immigration.

“I want our citizens to get jobs — I don’t want them to have competition,” (REALLY?) Trump responded, adding that the policy document is being drafted for signature, likely on Wednesday.

Trump’s federal government is on track to allow U.S. companies to import 85,000 new H-1B workers during the next several weeks.

Fortune 550 companies, smaller companies, and universities keep a population of roughly 1.5 million visa workers in U.S. jobs, and they also use those workers to transfer many additional jobs to corporate allies in India and other countries.

The members of Oxman’s group include Accenture, Adobe, Apple, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, IBM, and PWC. Many of these Fortune 500 companies sideline American graduates to hire foreign visa workers via programs such as the H-1B and Occupational Practical Training program.

The IT group also includes some of the Indian-run outsourcing companies that import many visa workers from India. The Indian-run companies include Cognizant ( a sleazy shiiit company) and Tata Consultancy Services. Indian-run companies supply visa workers to many banks, insurance companies, utilities, auto manufacturers, and many other companies.

Many polls show that American voters like — and want to like — immigrants. But the polls also show that the public strongly objects to companies hiring foreign workers before American employees. For example, an August 2017 poll reported that 68 percent of Americans oppose companies’ use of H-1Bs to outsource U.S.-based jobs that could be held by Americans.

Administration officials are touting the draft policy as a boost to blue-collar wage earners but apparently not to white-collar graduates.

WHY ARE YOU DESTROYING WHITE COLLAR JOBS?
This includes REPLACING management as well as lower level tech jobs? WHY? This was also a CAMPAIGN PROMISE TO STOP THAT TOO! We are not ALL blue collar people! There is no point in pursuing and giving out STEM money when legal Americans KNOW the job will go a a FOREIGNER.

It also applies to doctors and nurses and technicians! What they have done is broken up tasks normally performed by nurses and hiring high school graduates to do pieces of their job with a short “training course”. Also doctor functions are funneled down to nurses to save money.

God help you if they don’t do something right. They will not have the proper background to react properly because they don’t have the proper medical background. Some can barely speak English, read it or understand dosages info, timing etc… This is dangerous!

Yes. The last section of your comment, felix1999, deals with H1A visas. This “pandemic” has resulted in tens of thousands of Registered Nurses being laid off. But, this administration is allowing, almost an unlimited number, of their poorly educated and trained replacements to come it.

How stupid does this administration think we are?

I still have a glimmer of hope –

“President Donald Trump’s new executive order banning immigration to the United States will apply narrowly to those seeking permanent immigration status, a senior administration official said on Tuesday,” said a Reuters report. The report added, “Other workers such as those on so-called H1-B visas would be covered in a separate action, the official said.”

The rollback of the expected curbs on visa programs will be a huge disappointment to the many American graduates who say they have been pushed out of Fortune 500 jobs and careers by the alliance of U.S. investors, managers, and foreign visa workers.

No glimmer of hope. Ain’t gonna happen. If there was to be a moratorium on H1-A and H1-B visas, that would have been step one. Most making application for Permanent Resident Alien status are already here and working. If this was to ACTUALLY protect American workers, where this administration started …. that would have been the last thing to go,

I pray that I’m wrong, but when it comes to this administration’s actions …. We got sold down the river one more time.

I can understand the inability of building the “Wall”, as it requires the House and Senate. However, there were ample funds to round up, arrest, try and deport tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, of illegal aliens. This administration didn’t do it. It could have been done.

I voted for this president for three reasons: 1) Get rid of illegal aliens. 2) Get rid of illegal aliens. 3) Get rid of illegal aliens.

My three reasons … well, actions speak louder than words.

felix1999
felix1999

He lacked funds, like the wall to do a serious round up. Having said that though, why wasn’t some wall money allocated for that too? Couldn’t he take a portion of that for ICE and round up more illegals? I don’t understand if he could or could not do that.

What I do know is if Trump doesn’t get this done, it will NOT happen by anyone else. He is our LAST stand on this before our country is run by garbage and I include the unlikely event that we will ever have another Republican President again.

There isn’t enough funding for that and why I wonder about using some of the money being allocated for that. They are stretched to thin as it is but MORE round ups should be happening.

Now it is pointless with closed businesses…. Instead we are paying for them in hospitals with the virus. This is part of the reason why health care is so expensive. Illegals NEVER pay for it. They can NOT be refused emergency room health care so they pile in for it.

Agreed. How does halting immigration or releasing criminals on to the streets harmful to mitigation efforts concerning the virus?

Being held in jail or kept outside the borders is about as socially distant as it gets.

Let’s remember that during the 2008-2009 recession neither Bush nor Obama shut down immigration as Americans were losing employment is massive numbers. Candidate McCain might have won election, instead of losing to anti-American/anti-Semitic Obama, if he had said that immigration should be shut down to assure employment for American citizens once the situation turned around.

Bravo Trump for doing the right thing.

The only portion of immigration that was proposed to be closed, for sixty days, were those making application for Permanent Resident Alien Status. Most of those are already living AND working in the U.S.
NO reduction, much less a ban, for H1A, H1B, temporary work permits, visas that bring in thousands, and thousands, and thousand of Indians … where they make the Americans that they’re replacing train them or they lose all severance or other compensation.

This is nothing more than a slap in the face of the American worker. How stupid does this administration think we are?

I just posted on that. I am so PISSSED! I read more into his statement than I should have. For me, this is common sense! I am not a blind cheer leader for insanity.

Trump seemed surprised about the poll on 80% of people NOT wanting more of this. That was pointed out by the OAN reporter.

It’s a bipartisan voter issue. I don’t get it. He will lose college/university swing voters and he NEEDS them. This will not be an easy re-election for him.

We were fooled. He is not doing anything about WHITE COLLAR JOBS! College.University intership programs are drying up due to the virus.

Thankfully our youngest has not been affected by this but MANY students are. They need that internship money for tuition, books, health insurance, car insurance, or their rent etc. during the semester. They try to make it up in the summer through internships, TA or lab jobs etc. at the college/university during the year or through part time jobs.

FOREIGN STUDENTS will continue to be favored for internship JOBS through student VISAS and OPT. (Occupational practical training) serves as points to help them get green cards upon graduation and look more favorable to hiring companies. Plus companies are FINANCIALLY INCENTED to hire them over legal Americans in addition to getting them cheap, driving down salaries.)

Trump Exempts Fortune 500’s Visa Workers
from Immigration Curb
By Neil Monro 4/21/20

Trump:

“This order will only apply to individuals seeking a permanent residency,” Trump said in an April 21 press conference at the White House. He said:

It would be wrong and unjust for Americans laid off by the virus to be replaced with new immigrant labor flown in from abroad. We must first take care of the American worker — take care of the American worker. This pause will be in effect for 60 days, after which the need for any extension or modification will be evaluated by myself and a group of people, based on economic conditions at the time.

[It] will not apply to those entering on a temporary basis. As we move forward, we’ll examine what additional immigration-related measures should be put in place to protect U.S. workers. We want to protect our U.S. workers and I think as we move forward, we will become more and more protective of them … The last thing we want to do is take American workers’ jobs.

(LOL!! You continue to do just that! I noticed how NO REPORTER questioned white collar jobs….)

Two reasons why he lost. one his age when he was up against a young virile opponent. Two. Sarah Palin, nobody with a brain wanted to see her finger on the nuclear buttons, plus she was completely unfit to be a VP. There is I think a third reason. Obama was coloured so the left/libs were desperate to get the first coloured POTUS

Love it when Trump is decisive. IMO he should keep indefinitely the ban
on migration from hostile Islamic lands (which is really all of them).
There is no upside to Muslim migration even if most are not militant,
just risk & strife (increasing infiltration of our educational and
political institutions) with terrorism now & then. We surely don’t
need this.

The next best thing Trump should do is follow the
advice of Mike Pompeo, Tom Bolton & others and designate the Muslim
Brotherhood as a terrorist organization, and then go after Hamas
affiliate CAIR.

Why Trump is not more bold when he can be is a puzzle. In Islam, part of zakat — the alms required of every Muslim — should be given to further the jihad. I think one can expect that of every Muslim charity..

Look a little further into this proposed “immigration ban”. It ONLY restricts those making application for Permanent Resident Aliens. It allows, UNABATED, H1A (and registered nurses are being laid off as if there’s no tomorrow), H1B, work visas, agricultural work visas and the list goes on, and on, and on.

How in the hayull is this protecting American jobs for Americans?

An absolute farce. How stupid does this administration think we are?

With millions of unemployed and tens of billions in benefits paid out monthly in unemployment benefits it is time to solve the illegal problem in the USA. Here is one plan that may work. We pay them to leave! This is the time to solve our illegal immigration problem quickly and effectively. Let’s propose to give every illegal immigrant and their children, which is an estimated 40 million, a free ticket to their home country and a one time only stipend of $5000, paid when they have arrived at their destination. As each one of these illegals cost our society $50,000 annually in direct and indirect benefits, crime, casualty losses, medical expenses, infrastructure, and opportunity costs this would be a great bargain and would cost about $200 Billion. The departure of the illegals would put millions of tax-paying Americans to work and raise the wages of many others. The program would quickly pay for itself. Not to mention that the rule of law would be upheld, and those that left and want to return could apply in a lawful manner once they have repaid the $5000. Over the next 10 years, we would save about 20 Trillion dollars! That would be a 10,000% return and enough to pay off the national debt.
