PBS’s Alcindor vs. Black Surgeon General: People Are Offended You Told Blacks To Avoid Alcohol and Drugs

By RCP, April 11, 2020:

Surgeon General Jerome Adams, a member of the White House coronavirus task force, is accused by PBS NewsHour reporter Yamiche Alcindor of using language that “offended” people. At Friday’s coronavirus press briefing, Adams, a black man, asked black and Latino communities to stop using alcohol, drugs, and tobacco to fight the coronavirus for “Big Momma” and “Pop Pop.”

“You said that African-Americans and Latinos should avoid alcohol, drugs, and tobacco. You also said do it for your Abuela and do it for Big Mama and Pop-Pop,” Alcindor said to Adams.

“I said granddaddy too,” Adams chimed in.

“There are some people online that are already offended by that language and the idea that you’re saying behaviors might be leaning to these high death rates. Could you talk about whether or not people — could you, I guess, have a response for people who might be offended by the language that you used?” Alcindor asked.

“I have a Puerto Rican brother-in-law. I call my granddaddy ‘Granddaddy.’ I have relatives who call their–their grandparents ‘Big Mama.’ So, that was not meant to be offensive. That the language that we use and that I use. And we need to continue to target our outreach to those communities,” Adams responded.

“And it’s critically important that they understand it’s not just about them,” Adams continued. “And I was very clear about that. It’s not just about what you do, but you also are not helpless. We need to do our part of the federal level. We need people to their parts at the state level.”

Every question from her is a poor attempt at a “got you” question. How did she ever get a job doing journalism? Oh wait, über leftist NPR.

Maybe she was a quota hire at NPR and now it is stuck with her? If she gets fired, its because of racism, not that she is not a journalist.

I guess if someone didn’t ask her out when she was young it was because of racism, not her looks, intelligence and personality.

I guess if she isn’t allowed to cut into any line its because of racism.

I guess the reason she wasn’t picked as prom queen was that its because of racism.

I guess in school, when she wasn’t picked first for a team sport in gym class, its because of racism.

I guess if she isn’t served first at a family gathering its because of racism.

I’m confused. Are influenza numbers being reported or not? Some charts say one thing. Other charts, and articles, state another.

From April 6, 2020, it’s estimated that over 60,000 Americans have already died from Influenza A and B.

“So far this season, the CDC estimates
between 39 million and 55 million flu illnesses, at least 400,000 hospitalizations, and as many as 63,000 deaths from flu, of which 162 are pediatric.”

Hi Ach, well the web link I provided is strictly for Covid-19 cases. And it shows clear evidence that the new cases in the USA are leveling off. In most other countries, leveling off is followed by reductions in the incidence of in new cases. The USA appears to have ‘jumped the shark’ !

The data for common flu that you cite sounds right to me. However, we must take all current flu, cold, and Covid-19 data with a grain of salt, because:

1. All 3 infections mainly produce mortality through pneumonia, and these are very difficult to disambiguate. There are over 30 different causes of pneumonia, and all the viral pneumonias are sometimes lumped together.

2. The numbers you cite are under revision now by the CDC, because it now appears that many of those flu mortalities in late 2019 were actually Covid-19 mortalities:
“CDC data suggests coronavirus may have been in California as early as December”
A ‘severe flu season’ may have actually been the virus moving through the population, officials say.
https://justthenews.com/politics-policy/coronavirus/cdc-data-suggests-coronavirus-may-have-been-california-early-december

3. And of course there is controversy over the ways the CDC is counting Covid-19 mortalities:
“White House: US taking ‘very liberal’ approach to counting COVID-19 deaths”
Federal officials are treating anyone who dies with coronavirus as having died from it.

I posted that site, around three weeks ago. Although, I’ve been following the world numbers, not the U.S. breakdown.
Now, if anything that seems as if it could be Covid-19 related is to be listed as cause of death … How can they (CDC guidance) do so, when testing isn’t even necessary.
Respirators are killing people. They have had evidence that this type of infection is not to be treated with respirators (this type of disease), for quite some time. So, why are they still murdering people, many of which would survive quite well, if given oxygen, as opposed to murdering them with respirators?
This nation succumbing to this madness is ridiculous, beyond the pale.
If, five years ago, you were asked if the various governments of the U.S. could get away with such outright fascism, would you have given an affirmative answer?

Oh yes sure, in WWII many more liberties were restricted. There was rationing for many basic foods like meats, for gasoline, for clothing, etc. It was impossible to buy tires, there were travel restrictions, clampdowns on any discussions of military work that millions were doing, ID cards needed, arrests for leaving lights on during East Coast blackouts, and executions of spies. And many many more restrictions on civil and economic liberties. And 33% of US GDP went to military spending. People put up with it because it was necessary, and all that stuff disappeared after the war. Post-war, we even let commies run around and try to wreck the country.

Don’t forget, there is an alien entity that is trying to kill us all. We don’t know how successful it will be, but we are determined to win this war, and learn how to fight future wars like this, because China will send more viruses.

People, during WWI and WWII were encouraged to plant “Victory Gardens”. Now, we have totalitarian fascists that make it illegal to buy seeds.
Rationing of clothing? Try and find an open clothing store. At least, during war time, there weren’t the totalitarian fascists, of today, making it illegal for a clothing store to be opened.
The 33% of US GDP employed Americans. Today, it’s illegal for many businesses that employ Americans to be opened and/or operational.
As far as ID cards, today, the totalitarian fascists don’t even want to require them for the purpose of voting.
As far as foreign enemies that send viruses … So far, I’ve lived through two … China Covid-19 and Mexico for the Mexican Swine Flu.

Yes, Ach, I understand your frustration, and I value it. You and others will ensure that we return to full liberties ASAP when we beat this virus. In WWII, many people hated those liberty restrictions that damaged many lives. Young marriage age woman had no prospects, because they outnumbered available men 10 to 1. They followed men around. That might seem funny, but it was no joke for the women. And 500,000 American men did not return.

People rail at the inefficiencies in this war effort but wars always have fogs of ignorance and terrible inefficiencies. In the WWII US infantry, only 1 in 10 actually fired their rifle at the enemy (!). Most enemy causalities came from artillery. Bombers ran day and night over Germany, and bomb damage assessments showed poor results, with little damage done. They switched to fire-bombing cities until they ran out of cities. Sherman tanks were nick-named “Sure-will burn”, and German tankers laughed at them.

And the fog of ignorance was terrible too, we had little idea what the enemy was really up to. We were supposed to think the enemy was almost invincible. In fact, Germany had little hope of victory, being outnumbered 5 to 1 by other countries, and having so little industrial capacity that they used horse and wagon for most local military support; they had very few trucks. Bombing German troop formations caused massive horse casualties.
“The Myth of the Nazi War Machine”

So as wars go, the US is doing OK this time.

I am very familiar with the Pacific Theater, of WWII. The European Theater bored me.
During WWII, domestically, people were working and productive. Those not involved in fighting and dying were employed. Bars and restaurants were filled to capacity. The populace were urged to go to their houses of worship, as opposed to being forbidden to do so.
As far as one-in-ten actually firing at the enemy, my group of friends, since long departed, were from the Second Marine Division.
Battle of Saipan, first wave of assault was the Second and, in the very first wave, there was a 7% survival rate. I found this shocking, but records bear this out. For anyone in the vicinity of the Northern Marianas, I urge them to visit Saipan and read the names of the dead on the U.S. War Memorial. Navy … a few. Army … a few. Fourth Marine Division .. a few hundred. Second Marine Division … the thousands of names stretch the entire memorial. I’m quite fortunate that my father was one of the lucky 7%.
Rationing does not even come close to equaling the totalitarian fascists infringement upon the basic constitutional rights that are perpetrated upon Americans today.
I am not frustrated. Basically, I’m a bloody hermit and I’ve been self-quarantining for close to a decade. The moves of the fascists, such Nohio’s governor little mikki da-whiner, haven’t altered my life. Other than I haven’t been to the club to shoot skeet yet. It’s life as normal. Rather, the totalitarian fascist actions, taken by our government, sicken me.
If all of this folderol was necessary, explain South Korea (three died yesterday) NOT instituting these fascist controls and their numbers. In the ROK, factories remained open … everything remained open …. and how well have they gotten this little virus under control? Dr. Kim, Min Soo spoke with me yesterday (today his time). He was getting ready to go to church (Somang Presbyterian). Expecting huge numbers in attendance. He literally couldn’t believe that our churches were ordered closed by the governor. He asked me if Kim, Jong-Un was currently serving Nohio as the governor.

I am not defending any of these liberty-limiting actions, or ham-handed medical interventions. But I regard them as successive approximations to better solutions of epidemic control. The government needs critics. RE S. Korea, there are many lessons there that we need to learn.

The only thing that the ROK did, regarding “social distancing” was to close public schools. And, to impose a fourteen day “self-quarantine” on new arrivals into their country. The “self-quarantine” orders haven’t been followed too well. Almost all of their new infections (say past two weeks) have been due to the new arrivals not following the self-quarantine orders.

The ROK government never told the public to wear masks. There are impeachment moves, against their current president Moon, Jae-In, for having sent millions to China.
The population came up with their own masks and wore them on their own.

I never said the gov’t told people to wear them. They wear them, as in Hong Kong, due to their previous experience and cultural norms.

At first, they didn’t wear masks. As, President Moon had sent millions of masks, along with other medical equipment, to China. For close to two weeks, most people were without them. And, even with that, they went from the “epicenter” of viral infections to hardly showing on the map.

Hi Leonore, yes, I understand. But in this case, he has a point. It is impossible to completely believe anything the CDC and the National Institutes of Health say about Covid-19. A lot of key info is unknown, some data are clearly wrong, and there are socialist politics in the mix. The graphs I posted are the best data I can find, and they are probably accurate when they indicate that the numbers of new cases in the USA are leveling off.
