Coronavirus hospitalizations in New York hit lowest number since March 25 as Cuomo says he will let some parts of the state reopen before others

  • Gov. Andrew Cuomo said on Tuesday that some parts of the state would reopen before others but he did not say which would come first
  • It will depend, he said, on the local region’s trajectory and how equipped it is to handle a spike in cases
  • New York City has by far the highest number of cases and deaths but is further along in its trajectory
  • Cuomo did not say whether any part of the state would be able to reopen before the May 15 deadline
  • The number of new hospitalizations on Monday was 1,308 which is the lowest since March 25
  • The number of deaths was 481 which marks the second consecutive day it has been lower than 500
  • Cuomo will go to the White House on Tuesday afternoon to meet with President Trump
  • He says they will discuss testing and how the federal government can help with ramping up antibody tests

There were 1,308 new hospitalizations from COVID-19 across the state on Monday which is the lowest number since March 25.

Deaths were 481 which marks the second consecutive day that they have been less than 500. That has not happened since March 31 and April 1.

At his daily briefing on Tuesday, he said he would look at each area’s case count and infection rate and weigh it against their local capacity to cope with an outbreak.

It has by far the highest number of cases anywhere in the state with more than 130,000, but it has also passed its peak and is descending from it faster than other areas.

Cuomo will later go to the White House to speak with President Trump about the state’s necessity for federal help with ramping up antibody testing.

He said that while it is the states’ responsibility to carry out the tests once they get them, the federal government must step in to facilitate the international supply chain that mass testing relies upon.

At present, US labs and manufacturers cannot physically produce enough tests to get the country back to work because many of the chemicals they need come from overseas, namely China.

Cuomo said the federal government should step in to address that issue and allow the states to get on with carrying out and then processing the tests.

His announcement came as New York daily deaths were less than 500 for the second day in a row.

On Monday, 481 people died across the state. Hospitalizations continue to decrease as do the number of people being put on ventilators, but 1,300 new cases were confirmed.

Cuomo said on Tuesday that he would allow some parts of the state to reopen before others but he did not say which would get back to work first

‘We have to remember our calculus of good. Good, now, means not terrible but on an absolute scale, 1,300 people walking in the door with COVID in a single day in the state of New York… that would not be good news in any other context besides the context we are living in.

Cuomo did not specify which parts of the state he would allow to reopen first, but he did make a note of how the statistics in New York City far outweighed what is being seen anywhere else.

The strategy contradicts his earlier comments that he would apply a blanket rule to the entire state and work in conjunction with surrounding states to avoid people in one area that is in lockdown from traveling to another once it reopens and risking another spread.

At the moment, New York’s lockdown remains in place until May 15. He did not indicate whether any part of the state might be able to open before then.

‘The point is that different regions of the country have different curves. The virus does not hit at the same time at the same rate.

‘This state, we have very different regions within New York. New York City is one of the densest places on the globe.

‘You also have upstate New York and you see a variety across the country. We have a variety across the state. You have to watch each one of those individual curves and when does that region hit a high point and where is that.

‘Downstate New York, it appears we are on the descent. But how quickly do we descend?’ he said.

‘We’re going to make reopening decisions on a regional bases based on that region’s facts and circumstances. In other words, just like some states will reopen before some states, it’s also true across the state.

‘North country has a totally different situation than New York City,’ he said.

Why do we need mass testing? We all know that this virus spreads and people will die most will not. None of this makes sense. If you feel sick, then get tested. Why? If you are not sick enough to go to the hospital, why does the government need to really check everyone? This is out of control. Nothing is going to stop if from spreading, why do we need to be up everyone’s a$$.

Because asymptomatic people can and do spread the virus, thereby endangering other people who may end up with full-blown CoViD-19, and might die from it, or suffer permanent serious damage.

Yea, but my government is forcing me to work, but that is ok. But I cannot live free to get sick and die. Everybody thinks everybody is asymptomatic but they themselves are not. Life must go on.

NOT JUST NY!
New Signs of Pandemic Coming Under Control in 13 Countries ! Seven new ones since April 14.
So far, in Israel, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Denmark, and the Czech Republic, the daily numbers of newly recovered patients are now higher than the daily numbers of newly infected patients.
If more patients recover than new patients appear, then the sick population shrinks. Infectious diseases spread when each patient infects more than one other person. They shrink when each patient infects less than one other person. In Germany right now, the infection rate has dropped to 0.7, so their epidemic is shrinking.

In Germany, because the active cases and daily new cases are decreasing, while the deaths are increasing without interruption, doesn’t it seem fair to conclude that possibly the “optimistic signs” are due to failure or lack of proper and accurate testing procedures? I’d feel a lot more confident if the deaths were decreasing along with the “active” and “daily new” cases. But the cumulative deaths are increasing at a (fast) stable rate and have been increasing steadily since about the end of March. https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/country/germany/

Jay, yes, we must always be skeptical about all these data. Epidemiology data is always full of uncertainties. Definitions of causes of death, state of infection, recovery, etc., are all subject to huge variation between countries, because the WHO is incomptent [WHO=Wrong Health Organization]. But Germany ‘appears’ to be getting the epidemic under control.

One reason why people are not going into the hospital could be that they are afraid they will be put on a ventilator. We all know the ventilator kills 80% of patients who are placed on it. So if a person has the symptoms they might very well decide to use zinc, use Vitamin D and C, use any and all health supplements and therapies they can find (colloidal silver, food-grade hydrogen peroxide supplements, etc. etc.). There are lots of things to try. It’s likely that many people will avoid the hospital entirely until they actually start having trouble breathing. By then it can be too late, they might die at home. But I’d be wary of assuming that the numbers in the hospital are actually signs that the pandemic is fading away.. Let’s hope it is fading away but we have to be sure !!!

The more people who have had it, the more immune people there are and the less they will spread it.

The hospital can help if it gives people oxygen. You don’t need ventilators to do that. I wonder if a stay at home oxygen kit would be a good idea. Another problem with everyone going to the hospital is that they might think they have Corona virus but might actually have the flu or a bad cold and then wind up catching the Corona virus.

Once we are all “free” to spread the virus the number of deaths will go up again.

Our gravest problem is that our”leaders” including Trump refuse to admit and warn the people that the CCP Virus was deliberately released by the CCP to destroy their enemies and competitors across the planet. They refuse to tell us that we are in the midst of WWIII. The CCP has struck us far worse than the Japs at Pearl Harbor. Having gotten away with the first attack we can expect they will soon attack again with a far more virulent bioweapon. We need to immediately and preemptively annihilate this evil, murderous regime from the face of the earth regardless of the consequences because if we do not we are all going to be killed or enslaved.

It’s obvious we are in a State of War with the CCP, In war you either take risks or you are vanquished and become an occupied territory and slaves of the CCP and their willing Quislings already among us. We know now the CCP Virus, at least the strain we are dealing with at the present, is lethal to those who have underlying medical conditions and the elderly. All Efforts to assist these people should be made while the healthy are allowed to go about their business while practicing reasonable social distancing. Rather than visit grandma or grandpa send them flowers or have a long Skype visit. Sporting events can be held attended by the healthy and tested. The rest of us can watch from home. There is no need to shut down the economy, but only to adapt to the circumstances we face and survive.
