Pittsburgh Sanitation Workers Go on Strike, Want “Hazard Pay”

30

It begins. During a time of crisis, you see the best and the worst in people. Here is an example of the worst. These folks are lucky to still be working. I would fire them all.

Pittsburgh Sanitation Workers Refusing To Work

Story continues below advertisement

The workers claim the city isn’t providing protections that would safeguard them against the coronavirus.

By Eric Heyl, Patch Staff, March 25, 2020:

PITTSBURGH, PA – Pittsburgh sanitation workers are refusing to work until they are given adequate protections against the coronavirus.

Workers on Wednesday morning assembled outside the city Bureau of Environmental Services office in the Strip District. KDKA-TV reported they were sent home for the day with pay, and now city and union officials will meet to try to resolve the dispute.

It’s unclear how the city refuse collection schedule will be impacted by the walkout.

There are a lot of unemployed people out there right now who would love those jobs. They need to go back to work
tomorrow, or replace them all.

Expecting your employer to provide PPE gear is NOT unreasonable…

IT is a requirement of OSHA…

Nothing like a labor union trying to manipulate its people by taking advantage of this situation. Everyone involved should be fired and the union dissolved.

Take the Reagan approach.
FIRE THEM and HIRE OTHERS to do the job.
Reagan did that to the striking air traffic controllers.

I was hired by TVA to join the nuclear power operator training program in 1981. It was made clear that our mandatory membership in the IBEW had a no strike clause, citing Reagan’s actions. During the time I was employed, they screwed us royally.

One of many examples: only operators were allowed to open or close valves, and we were required to document any manual valve movements.

Coming out of an outage, we experienced a minor loss of coolant accident. Some pipefitters had bypassed an emergency core cooling system valve during testing. They freely admitted operating the valves involved without operator involvement, which was a procedural violation. The two operators who did the startup valve checklist couldn’t possibly have seen the problem without a scaffold being built, and that wasn’t ever done. They were demoted and disciplined. The union did nothing. The union president and vice president were totally bought off.

Handling CV19 infected trash is a massive Hazard…

Contrary to Pam and everyone else here posting I agree with you. I thought this would have happened already! If this corona virus is so toxic that it calls for everyone to hide at home, then what makes you think it isn’t most lethal to those who dispose of trash and waste! Everybody haphazardly throws everything in the trash without thinking that isn’t the end of it. Put yourself in their position for a second and realize that their job just got dangerous. Others are spouting off as elitists’ with their comments. As they said during the Vietnam war, if you think this war is so important, you go stand on the front line. Same here, if you want to handle hazardous waste, go do it. Does anybody really understand this virus? If it got terrible these sanitation workers will have to be hauling out the dead bodies next. Is anybody clearly telling them how to protect themselves? Doesn’t sound like it for that is what they asked. Clear guidance on procedures. Not really asking that much considering.

I most certainly agree…

We can only guess at what jobs are hazardous in relation to CV19… and Trumpo should have already put together a list of those jobs…

And ALL employers should be expected to provide PPE for the workers…

But it’s hard when the massive lying idiot Trumpo and his lousy task force is Americans they don’t need masks… <<< Such false information... such lies...

Here is another example of how the massive lying idiot Trumpo has failed America in handling CV19…

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to calculate how many jobs are associated with cross contamination…

PPE is a requirement of OSHA…

When will OSHA step up and hold the American Government accountable for their failures???

I really don’t think you can put all of this at Trumps feet. At 1st there were a lot of unknowns and out right lying by some as to what it is and spreads and that continues. If you’re looking for accountability, well everyone involved has skewed thinking. Honesty has taken a back seat to political posturing.

A whole bunch can be laid at the idiot Trumpo’s feet…

Beginning with not banning ALL incoming flights back in early February…

If anything… the American government had been letting CV19 spread intentionally… for the purpose of Flattening the Curve. And now it has gotten out of hand…
