Panic buying at McDonald’s ahead of coronavirus closure of restaurants across UK

By: Zoe Drewett, Metro, March 23, 2020:

Pictures have revealed queues of people attempting to get one last McDonald’s fix before the chain shuts up shop across the UK due to coronavirus.

McDonald’s restaurants around the country will shut from 7pm today in a bid to adhere to social distancing rules and stop the spread of the deadly infection. It is not yet clear when the chain will be able to reopen.

Previously, it closed its seating areas but still offered takeaway and drive-thru services. But in a statement on Sunday, a company spokesperson said all restaurants in the UK and Ireland will be closed for the foreseeable future to protect the ‘wellbeing and safety of our employees…as well as the best interests of our customers’.

This morning, huge queues of cars, as well as customers waiting for takeaways, were spotted at the McDonald’s in Consett, County Durham and in Dover, Kent. One employee was seen wearing a protective face mask to serve customers ignoring social distancing warnings.

In Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, an enterprising salesperson erected a sign next to the queuing cars to advertise hand sanitiser and toilet roll – two of the most sought after items after coronavirus panic buyers stripped the shelves and caused stock to sell-out across the country.

Customers across Tyneside made one final pilgrimage to the golden arches before the fast food firm becomes the latest coronavirus casualty. Costa Coffee, Subway and Nando’s have also announced the temporary closure of all their UK sites, days after Boris Johnson told pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants to close – but allowed venues to continue serving takeaways.

He is now under pressure to go further and announce nationwide lockdown measures amid fears the public are refusing to listen to warnings to self-isolate. Thousands of people flocked to busy tourist sites across the UK over the weekend, despite being told that not listening to social distancing advice will result in more deaths.

Schools are officially shut for the first day today and are only allowing the children of key workers to attend so their parents can continue to work. But Tube trains in the country’s capital city today were packed at rush hour as services were reduced,

It is better to stay home and cook then risk your health on the hand washing techniques of teenagers. Fast food needs to go to full automation.

Lol! Ya, there’s a lot of food in England that I just couldn’t/ can’t eat.

However, the fish & chips were delicious!
I was suspect at first, but Omg they were so good. And I’m a very picky eater. Pubs made them the best.

LOTS of decades ago, my (first) wife raved about “Stone’s Chop House” in (I think it was) London, so when we went there together, that was a key stop for us.

After dinner, she asked, ‘well, what do you think?”

My honest answer was, “well, the meat had no flavor and I could count the number of peas on the plate, and they didn’t have much flavor, either.”

Yes, I’ve been back several times and eaten in a lot of places around the UK in general, and the food’s better than it was then, but in just about all cases, I’ve had better fare on cruise ships…

🙂 No offense intended to anyone, of course! 🙂

Well UK food has been heavily influenced by US food so what does that tell you? Also like USA, UK now has cuisine from many different parts of the world. I grew up in UK and my mother was a good trained cook, although it was war time we never had to eat poor meals. Many Americans probably were in UK during and after the war when there was rationing and shortages, so obviously compared to the bounty of USA it seemed poor, so the reputation of our food suffered. It is time for US people to shut up about British food. Your diet and your obesity epidemic does not speak well for your diet anyway as you consume vast quantities of unhealthy foods. For the record I never eat MuckD, KFC etc. and think they are complete crap.

Cry us another river snowflake. Can’t stand the truth as many libturds! The US wasn’t bountiful after or during the war as you so ignorantly thought. You see the US had people from all over the world and the food was made to be tasty and nutritious. Because some over eat you have an issue? And for your ignorant information 1 in 4 adults are classed as obese and a further 62% are overweight, so STFU moron!

I wasn’t aware that mc&d’s was English? Damn I always thought that franchised stores had to use the propriety items and process to make their products. I guess they only use the name in GB for mc&d’s? If it’s mc&d’s then it isn’t English food just made there.

Don’t tell anyone but I prefer Wendy’s.

Don’t be fooled, in the interest of the current social distancing, drive-through lanes will be the preferred method of doing business instead of a sit down meal in a crowd.

Actually, the biggest risk is most of these fast food joints hire Paki’s to prepare and serve the food.

Is there some magic cure in the fries that we have not heard about? Maybe it’s the secret sauce? What are they hiding from us?

Stopped at our local supermarket the other day… all the ground beef shelves were empty, so I bought a few pounds of wild salmon and porterhouse and london broil steaks…

Enjoy your ‘burgers,’ kids….
