I’m pretty sure that now that Commiefornia has the ability to know how much ammo you’ve purchased thanks to our background checks for ammo purchases, someone will notice who purchases large volumes of ammo… and considering the MSM makes a big deal about a couple of boxes (100 rounds) of ammo, they’d probably consider 1000s of rounds a red flag though I would consider it as someone found a good sale! LOL!

As for improvised firearms, you’ve made my point. You can outlaw firearms but anybody can make them. Some are really easy. Some are more complex.

Obviously using pipes is the easiest improvised firearm. Building an AR would require tools like a mill or router and perhaps the ability to melt aluminum along with molds if you can’t get an 80% receiver or any other manufactured parts. On the other hand some parts of an AK are made out of stamped steel so some of those parts are relatively easy to make.

In order to prove no law would prevent someone with the knowledge and desire from making an illegal firearm, PA Luty paid the price, aka jail time, to prove his point by making a sub machine gun (a pistol caliber fully automatic firearm) out of hardware store parts and no special tools. I think all he used besides a drill was a hammer and vise and related articles to bend the sheet metal in addition to files and perhaps grinders to form the parts. So with common hardware store parts and no special tools, he proved his point which angered the UK government. So instead of giving up on gun control, the UK government busted him with having a working illegal firearm which actually proved Luty’s point that anybody can get an illegal firearm even if there was an all out ban on firearms including a ban on firearm parts.

Likewise getting ammo, if there’s an all out ban might be a challenge but not impossible. If you can’t get black market ammo but if you can get powder, bullets and shells then you can load your own ammo. I even saw a guy make his own gun powder and bullets out of melted lead.2

You can outlaw firearms and even ammo but law breakers will always break the law.

C’mon … bulk purchases are the ONLY way to go. Even with a quantity as low as 1,000, 9mm rounds with brass cases runs between 15 pennies ‘r so, a round. At the 10,000 mark, it can drop to as low as 13 cents. Steel cartridges even lower. But, for my .416 Rigby, I can’t seem to find ANY deals, no matter what the quantity.
For those that think ten thousand rounds too much, it’s not uncommon to go through a thousand rounds in a weekend. Ten thousand is only a ten week supply.

The Rigby is typically fired only twice a year. I like to keep the optics adjusted. Which means, out of the twenty rounds, most are when it’s in a Lead Sled. I have the mix of .300 magnums, the Win .300, Weatherby, and the Remington Ultra (RUM). The .300 Weatherby Magnum is shot from a Weatherby Mark V, second year of German production, and it has the original old Weatherby Imperial scope. You won’t see purtier wood anywhere. When shooting those, standing, I have what I call my “half bra”. I have the maximum and it reduces felt recoil down to almost a .30-06 level. Fortunately, I live in a state that allows me to have ammunition shipped to my door.
Back when I shot bench rest, competitively, I did reload. That wasn’t to save money, that was for accuracy purposes. But today’s competition is a totally different ball game. You have guys ringing steel at 4,000 yards. With the finest of optics made, I don’t care what power, I don’t believe that I could see that far.

Old ‘n feeble … I am. Just two years ago, I was able to run a few miles. But, the last two years …. I’m lucky to be able to touch my toes.
However, on the subject of accuracy, I have an acquaintance that has a mega-cheap Thompson/Center Compass, in .300 Win Mag. I believe that after rebate, before sales tax, it was a $200.00 number. He threw a cheap ($120.) scope on it … but he’s consistently ringing steel at 1000 yards.
Here’s a way to see if your .223 is hitting the steel at your 400 yard point. Get a dollar can of white spray paint. Paint the target. After firing at it … check to see if any white is missing.
A $1.00 expense will let you know.

From what I’ve read about that Ruger, it should.
