Facebook’s Zuckerberg: Social media must accept some govt. regulation

I remember when I was kid, my mom would take me with her to go grocery shopping. While waiting to check-out at the supermarket, there were rows of tabloid newspapers on display with headlines more outrageous than the next – UFOS! Three headed babies! Extraterrestrials! No one shut them down. Democrats didn’t call for speech laws. So what’s changed. The left has seized our control of our institutions and means to drag America down the road to totalitarian hell.

Zuckerberg: Social media facing greater threats, must accept some govt. regulation

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said social media companies need more regulation to fight the growing problem of misleading content online. A gathering of politicians, diplomats and security specialists converged in Germany for the annual Munich Security Conference.

Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg spoke at this year’s event about the social media giants work to counter online election interference. Zuckerberg once again called for more regulation on social media platforms, similar to existing rules for the telecoms and media industries.

“I think that there needs to be regulations in at least four areas touching our company,” stated the Facebook CEO. “They are elections, political discourse around content more broadly, content moderation, privacy and data portability.”

Zuckerberg added, due to the many decisions in these areas, regulations would create a balance with different social values. The Facebook CEO also said, despite the work needed to be done, he is more confident about Facebook’s security now than in previous years.

“The scale of what we need to do on security today is bigger than the scale of what the whole company was just eight years ago, so certainly the threats are out there,” stated Zuckerberg. “I think we are getting increasingly sophisticated, the partnerships are getting better, I am more confident about where we are.”

35,000 people are now employed at Facebook to review online content and implement security measures. Facebook, Twitter and Google have come under pressure globally to better combat governments and political groups, who use their platforms to spread false information.

Zuckerberg is expected to meet with European politicians in Munich and Brussels to discuss data practices, regulation and tax reform.
