Dutch Museum Debates Censoring Degas Work to Avoid Muslim Offense

By Abigail R. Esman, IPT News February 18, 2020

They are two of the most beloved artists of all time: Edgar Degas, celebrated for his extraordinary draftsmanship and tender, dynamic paintings of ballerinas; and Vincent van Gogh, adored not just for his tragic life story, but for his shimmering canvases, those world-famous images of starry nights and bright sunflowers.

Now, a museum dedicated to Van Gogh’s oeuvre is asking whether it is “appropriate,” in anno 2020, to exhibit a drawing by Degas.

To be sure, it’s not just any drawing. The sketch in question depicts a bathing woman from behind, her derriere revealed in all its flesh and glory. It is also a drawing the Amsterdam-based Van Gogh Museum purchased last year at auction for the eye-widening price of $6 million.

Yet apparently even before acquiring the “Bather,” part of a series Van Gogh is known to have especially admired, museum staff discussed the issue of whether it could or should be placed on view. Earlier this month, the Van Gogh Museum’s new director, Emilie Gordenker, observed on Dutch national TV that while she is pleased the work is now hanging in the museum, she considers it important to address the question of “whether female nudes are appropriate for people of all cultures.”

Story continues below advertisement

This, as everyone immediately understood, was code, a subtle way of asking, really, whether nudes should be exhibited at all in a museum located in a city where Muslims happen to live.

It’s not the first time a question like this has been asked. In 2006, a Berlin opera house cancelled its performance of Mozart’s “Idomeneo” out of concern for the “incalculable safety risk” posed by a scene depicting the severed heads of Mohammed, Jesus, Buddha, and Neptune. A year later, the Gemeentemuseum in The Hague bowed to pressure from Muslim radicals who threatened the museum if it exhibited photographs by Iranian art student Soorah Hera that depicted gay men disguised as Mohammed and his son-in-law Ali. The works were removed from the exhibition, and Hera was forced into hiding. And following the death threats and assassination attempts against several European cartoonists who had depicted the prophet Mohammed, a sin in Islam, gunmen stormed the editorial office of French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in January 2015. Twelve people were killed and11 injured in the attack.

But since the Charlie Hebdo massacre, Western cultural leaders have tended to be less willing to compromise on these issues. More important, there is nothing blasphemous about the Degas drawing, nothing about it to send radicalized Muslims into a violent rage. It poses no “security risk” to the museum. What’s more, no Muslim or Muslim group has threatened to take action, or even mentioned any discomfort with the drawing, at least publicly, nor has the museum indicated otherwise. And no one appears to have requested it not be placed on exhibition.

So why, then, the debate?

“The role of museums is changing,” Gordenker told TV program “Buitenhof” on Feb. 9. “They are increasingly seen as part of the culture and society around them.”

But is that really new? Many in the art world can recall the uproar when, in 1999, then-Mayor Rudy Giuliani threatened to cut off all subsidies to the Brooklyn Museum over its plans to include a painting by the artist Christopher Ofili of the Virgin Mary, created with oil paint, glitter, and elephant dung. (The work is now part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art.) The museum refused to bow to his pressure, and the public by and large stood with it. You do not censor art, the public declared. You especially do not censor art without first understanding it. And the censorship of public institutions is not an American value.

Even in the Netherlands, the public has long been involved in museum decisions. In the early 1990s, the Dutch government paid an American restorer $800,000 to repair a painting by Barnett Newman in the collection of the Amsterdam Stedelijk Museum after it had been slashed by a vandal. The restoration was a failure. The government sued the restorer, Daniel Goldreyer, but not before both the media and the public had expressed their outrage at the cost, and that it had been paid to a restorer outside the Netherlands.

But more importantly, who declared museums the center for such critical sociological debates, and when? Moreover, while America removes Confederate statues from its plazas and Holland’s own national museum, citing the Dutch history of slavery, no longer uses the term “Golden Age” to describe 17th-century Dutch culture, shouldn’t the real reason not to exhibit a $6 million Degas drawing – if it is to be censored at all – be the artist’s rabid anti-Semitism?

Rather, we could talk about what there is to see in Degas’ work: about his passion for depicting movement in a static image, about the line and color that so bewitched Van Gogh. Or we could talk about curator Fleur Roos Rosa de Carvalho’s observation that “all the colors of the rainbow can be found in [the bather’s] skin.” We – or the museums – could teach people how to see.

In fact it was just this that, in 2005, inspired Holland’s most celebrated curator, Rudi Fuchs, to bring a group of Moroccan-Dutch youth to the Rijksmuseum in an effort to teach them about art. The painting he selected: Rembrandt’s “Jewish Bride” – a work, coincidentally, that Van Gogh himself once wrote brought him to tears. Not one student had a word to say about the fact that the bride was Jewish. Not one student had anything to say about the man’s hand on the woman’s breast. They talked about the painting while a reporter for Dutch national daily Volkskrant took notes. And when one student admired the gold jewelry the bride wore, Fuchs pushed her forward to the painting. “You don’t see gold,” he told her. “You see paint. Only paint.” To another, he said, “Art is fantasy. You can see things in a painting that only you see. What do you see?”

But this is not the discussion Gordenker seems to have had in mind when she suggested that museums should stimulate conversation. Rather, it appears, she meant that a museum should create buzz so people will come – and this, she has certainly accomplished. The Degas drawing has now become the star attraction at a museum dedicated to the work of a different artist entirely, whose masterpiece sunflowers and sketches of peasants in the field will go unregarded as visitors seek out the fleshy buttocks of a comparatively unimportant “bather.”

Yet meantime, museums as well as churches across the world still quietly spotlight their portraits of the Madonna nursing a naked baby Jesus. In the name of cultural sensitivity, should these now come down as well? Should the question even be debated? Rather than insisting on the normalcy of nudity, rather than teaching the importance of form and history and the painting of light along the curves of thighs and shoulders, rather than asking ‘what do you see?,’ opening the minds and eyes of those still stumbling in the dark, shall we just turn out the lights? Shall we stumble, too, in solidarity? Is that how it works?

Yes, it is important for a museum to inspire conversation. But not this conversation.

Because, as with the rampant “trigger warnings” on American campuses, such indulgences of small-mindedness and ignorance produce nothing, leaving only the slow death of the Enlightenment, of knowledge, the tragic, dark destruction of all we are, and all we could have been.

Strip Club Visits Contradict Contrived Stereotype Of Fort Hood Shooter
Paul Joseph Watson
Prison Planet.com
Monday, November 9, 2009

Just like the 9/11 patsy hijackers, Hasan had a non-Islamic fundamentalist taste for lap dancers and alcohol

Despite a desperate attempt on behalf of the establishment media to reinforce clichéd stereotypes to prop up the war on terror, by depicting the Fort Hood shooter as a devout Muslim fundamentalist, it turns out that just like the 9/11 pasty hijackers, Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan had a taste for the very much westernized sins of alcohol and strip clubs.

Hasan’s description as a “devout Muslim, and one who had difficulty finding a wife who would wear a head scarf and would pray five times a day,” is contradicted by the revelation that Hasan was a frequent visitor at his local strip club, where he would drink alcohol and pay women to lap dance for him.

“Hasan sat at a table in the back corner of the club, to the left of the stage on which strippers dance around a pole, employees said,” reports Fox News.

“I remembered his face because it was the first lap dance I [gave] to a customer while working here,” said 31-year-old Jennifer Jenner. “When I saw his face [Friday] on TV, I jumped out of bed, I knew it was him.”

“Jenner said Hasan was dressed casually both nights he came to the club – in jeans and a T-shirt the first night and then wearing a baseball cap the next. She recalled that he arrived at about 6:30 p.m. and stayed until 2 a.m,” according to the report.

Hasan has been characterized as an “Islamic extremist” by all corners of the media since it emerged that he was upset about being deployed to Iraq. He is stereotyped in reports of being “a Muslim first and an American second,” and yet his behavior suggests the opposite.

Hasan’s penchant for strip clubs, which would be seen as complete abomination by fundamentalist Muslims, mirrors exactly the behavior of the 9/11 hijackers in the months before 9/11.

Many of the 9/11 hijackers not only frequented strip clubs and got regularly drunk, but they also purchased pornography, sex toys, gambled, and had sex with prostitutes. This type of behavior is consistent with these men being westernized Arabs who were being paid a lot of money to pose as fundamentalists, when in reality they spent their spare time indulging in activities that real fundamentalists would consider to be sins beyond repentance.

However, as was also the case with the 7/7 bombing patsies who led westernized lives completely at odds with their portrayal by the media, Hasan’s strip club visits contradict the contrived notion that he was an Islamic fundamentalist seeking to inflict revenge upon the infidels at Fort Hood, since by the nature of his own behavior, Hasan was one of those very infidels.

All sin is washed away by an act of jihad:

“So let those fight in the cause of Allah who sell the life of this world for the Hereafter. And he who fights in the cause of Allah and is killed or achieves victory –
We will bestow upon him a great reward (Paradise and all those virgins).” (Quran 4:74).

“Anyone who kills an infidel is guaranteed Paradise.” Sahih Abu Dawud vol. 2 no.2489.

Easy………….

Aniconism in IslamAniconism
is the avoidance of images of sentient beings in some forms of Islamic
art. Islamic aniconism stems in part from the prohibition of idolatry
and in part from the belief that creation of living forms is God’s
prerogative. .Moslems should NOT view any art featuring “sentient beings” so DO NOT LET them in, for their own sake. It is their religious choice ………………….. so DO NOT deprive the rest of us, just prohibit THEM.

Islam is a false faith, created by a false prophet, for the sole purpose to justify his “rulership” over his flock. Their fake prophet was an exception to nearly all the laws he applied to others. Muhammad was the biggest hypocrite and he will surely burn in Hell for his lies.

The art of the BURKA …. just replace all the classic western artists with BURKART …
Here, in the finest example of BURKART … Gummy Worm Burka ….
BURKART removes the skill to draw faces, emotions, eyes, or the human figure … no artistic skill required.
And students may take loans out for thousands of dollars for that magical diploma in BURKART …
Imagine, your child with two hundred thousand dollars of student loans and a Bachelorette of Burkart !!

I find the hypocrisy from the Left to be staggering. They wilfully have blinders on where Political Islam is concerned — yet so many of them support “the arts.”

If it were not for Charles Martel, there would not be any Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Part, Beatles, Stones. There would not be Downton Abbey or Family Guy. There would not be the flims of Walt Disney or Martin Scorcese. Doesn’t matter your taste, it will be rendered an isult to Political Islam, and in point of fact already has been.

And if Political Islam gains control, all of those things will be considered unclean and as much as possible destroyed. And none of this is hidden yet the Left colludes in the destruction of the West. And for what Dhimmitude? What kind of existence is that. And Political Islam is nothing to do with the Assyrian or Persian Empires. It is dark, cruel, vicious.

Yes, that is why he uses Political Islam because the religious portion is but one aspect — Political Islam is an entire political system that overarchs the other areas, including religion, which is used for political ends. They use “religion” as the thin end of the wedge, a beard, a Trojan horse.

I have to say I don’t care if they don’t show nudes.

I don’t like seeing nude women on TV or in movies. (Yuck).

I don’t see the need for it anywhere. There are tons of excellent pieces that don’t include pornography.

I’d prefer it and I guarantee you religion has nothing to do with being grossed out by seeing naked women anywhere.

Ew.

Most naked women on TV or in movies have shockingly deformed breasts. Not to shame anybody but at least have beautiful breasts if you must show them! And bones are NOT beautiful! The Kardashians are too fat but most women baring themselves are far too thin!

Try SOME curves! Ten to fifteen pounds on these stick figures, please!

Work out so it looks good!

But holy cow, what do little girls have to look forward to as adults if these skinny women with deformed looking breasts keep popping up on film?!

I wouldn’t want to be an adult if that’s how I’d look!

There is well-established artistic appreciation for the nude, human being which doesn’t involve overt sexual expression. As a person who has hung out nude with consensual adults, once you do, you don’t get so excited by nudity. People just blend in and it isn’t a big deal! Also, there is little practical use for a swimsuit in water. Clothing fibers pollute bodies of water as well as filters of pools and hot tubs. As long as you are sitting on a towel, it really doesn’t matter.
Islamic ideology cheapens life both animal and human, humanity in general and maturity of consciousness. It is good for one thing, conquest and subjugation of large numbers of people by invaders and a clique of Misogynist fanatics! It is globalist in its conception of a Caliphate which is why globalist leftists favor the Islamic migrants who also lower living standards and lessen wages of 1st World people! In effect, they are globalist foot soldiers helping usher in their New World Order by undermining more civlized natives! It is not a phobia to fear those who seek to do you harm, it is Islamo-realism to dislike the Islamic Creed!

I appreciate your efforts to enlighten. However, as a child my family went to nude beaches, saunas in the nude, and my mom and stepdad went around in underwear around the house.

It’s why I prefer seeing people in clothing.

There were people of all shapes and sizes in the nudist places we went to. It turned me off to nudity.

Good grief! I cant’ even get past the 1st paragraph…

Why does anybody even consider sharia compliance as something we should aspire to? Does anybody aspire to comply with Mosaic Law? Or any other teaching of any other religion? Does anybody even concern themselves whether they should offend Christians or not? Where’s the outcry when someone pees in a jar, puts a crucifix in it and then calls that art? Why does no one say, “Oh… we shouldn’t put that out because then we wouldn’t be all inclusive”?

Here’s something to ponder: this is how you know who owns you… just ask yourself who you can’t offend. Do you really want to be owned by Islam? Or your moronic government? Or both?

New Zealand says, “Oh… we don’t have a 2nd Amendment like the US.” New Zealand doesn’t understand where our 2nd Amendment comes from and why we have it… we have unalienable rights from God. The Government doesn’t grant us the 2nd Amendment. We the people have told the government that we have a certain unalienable right from God and that the government is not to infringe on it. All free people have unalienable rights from God. Having said that, it is only the Judeo-Christian worldview that can justify that we have unalienable rights from God that don’t belong in the hands of government to grant to us but are ours because we are created by God in the image of God. The government can’t grant you something that is not theirs to grant. And like the 2nd Amendment for New Zealand, many western nations have laws that restrict their freedom of speech and right for free association… your government can’t take what isn’t theirs to grant… unless you grant them to power to take it from you.

Sadly, New Zealand as well as so many western nations have drifted away from God and are now run by those who reject God. As a result, those leaders can’t discern right from wrong, nor good from evil. They embrace evil and think they are embracing something good. Be warned western nations… when you reject God and tell God to stay away, you will get what you ask for… but you may not like what you get. Mohammad promised his jihadis paradise if they die while attempting to subjugate you… paradise is a place filled with mostly women… a minimum of 72 virgins for every jihadi… but he also says hell will be filled with mostly women… beware of the “paradise” that you western nations think you’ll get when you invite Islam in and then ignore the hell they bring. It’ll only get worse… just look at majority Islamic countries and ask yourselves how non-Muslism are treated there. Is that really what you want in your nation when they replace your laws with sharia? And don’t say you don’t want sharia if you are already trying to be sharia complaint! Right now you have the freedom to be sharia compliant… if Islam takes over, it will no longer be optional.
