Texas Becomes First State to Reject Refugee Resettlement

Lone Star state has taken 10 percent of all refugees in last decade

By: Charles Fain Lehman, WFB, January 10, 2020 3:00 PM

Texas governor Greg Abbott (R.) on Friday told the State Department that his state will become the first in the nation to refuse federal refugee resettlement.

Story continues below advertisement

In a letter to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Abbott wrote that in the wake of the border crisis that rocked the state in 2019, Texas lacks the state and private capacity to deal with even more demand on its humanitarian resources.

“At this time, the state and non-profit organizations have a responsibility to dedicate available resources to those who are already here, including refugees, migrants, and the homeless—indeed, all Texans,” Abbott wrote. “As a result, Texas cannot consent to initial refugee resettlement for FY2020.”

David Rutz breaks down the most important news about the enemies of freedom, here and around the world, in this comprehensive morning newsletter.

The move is likely to shake up refugee resettlement in the United States, as Texas has historically played home to as many as 10 percent of annual refugee arrivals. Particularly if other states follow suit, this may in turn mean a continued decline in refugee admissions in the Trump era.

In his letter, Abbott pinned the blame for the circumstances leading to his decision squarely on Congress, writing that “Texas has been left … to deal with disproportionate migration issues resulting from a broken federal immigration system.”

The state, which makes up over half of America’s 2,000 mile border with Mexico, was particularly hard hit by 2019’s illegal immigration crisis. Data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection show that of the roughly 850,000 individuals apprehended attempting to illegally cross, 626,000—74 percent—were picked up in one of the five border sectors covering Texas. In total, Texas saw a 150 percent increase in border apprehensions over F.Y. 2018, compared to a 54 percent increase in the other border states.

“Texas continues to have to deal with the consequences of an immigration system Congress has failed to fix,” Abbott wrote.

This strain is exacerbated by Texas’s disproportionate generosity toward refugees in years past. As Abbott noted, roughly 10 percent of refugees arriving since 2010 have gone to Texas. It was the number one state for refugee resettlement in 2019, accounting for 9 percent of refugees, or 1,389 individuals. California and New York, by comparison, accepted only 6 percent.

Abbott’s move follows President Donald Trump’s executive order, issued in September, which required states to give their consent before more refugees are resettled in their territory. Thirty-nine states have thus far signed on, with the Lone Star state now the lone standout refusing any more arrivals.

Mark Krikorian, executive director of the Center for Immigration Studies, told the Washington Free Beacon that this change was intended “to give states and localities some control over their own destinies.” Krikorian declined to comment on the wisdom of Abbott’s decision—”I’m not going to tell people in Texas what to do, that’s up to them”—but emphasized that refugee resettlement is as much as anything a matter of fiscal soundness.

“Some states may want to take refugees,” Krikorian said. “That’s okay, if they know what they’re getting in to. In other words, they’re affirming that they understand that the federal government is going to be fobbing off enormous costs on them per person. If they’re okay with that, so be it.”

Abbot in 2016 withdrew his state from direct participation in the federal Refugee Resettlement Program, citing the Obama administration’s failure to provide him assurances that resettled refugees would not pose a threat. Abbott said then that while Texas would still accept refugees, they would do so “without the state acting as the middleman between federal dollars and local resettlement agencies.” Non-state actors have since continued to work directly with the federal government to resettle refugees, a practice that will likely end thanks to Abbott’s decision.

The underlying objective of the Progressive Socialists is and always has been to bring the United States down. They are using immigration and refugee resettlement, as weapons to make the system fail and accomplish their goal…and they are being allowed to use the public’s tax money to do the whole scam. The problem, for them is that some Americans are waking up and saying ‘NO’! It’s about time, Texas…Thank you.

Why is it that EVERY White country is forced to accept massive 3rd world immigration, assimilation, and why is it that Only White countries are forced to become multicultural? No one asks that of any non-White country. Multiculturalism is a codeword for White Genocide.

It’s all part of the plan. Wealth redistribution and people redistribution so no matter where you go, it is the same. Someone should DEMAND Muslim countries like Saudi Arabia,Qatar and other countries TAKE THEM ALL but they have adamently refused. They don’t want them. They don’t want MUSLIM terrorism and dead beats. You can’t force them to take them. Japan refuses them too as well as China and Russia to name a few other countries.

Good decision, Gov. Abbott. Until The Wall is completed, the border crisis will continue. America does not have the means, resources to take in “alleged” refugees flooding our country. Let it be like the good old days and have sponsors, charitable our private that will take financial resposibility and NOT a public charge. That is the way my grandfather came here by a private citizen.

I don’t care about the “refugees”…..first, that is a misnomer….they are being herded here by Globalists to change demographics…..second, they aren’t here to just work. They rape, murder, steal, and cause a lot of misery.
The so-called DACAs that DEMAND, we give them citizenship is even worse.
Here is a story by Judicial Watch about the DACAs:

MORE THAN 100,000 DACA APPLICANTS HAVE BEEN ARRESTED—MURDER, RAPE, DUI
By Judicial Watch, November 19, 2019:
More than 100,000 illegal immigrants who requested a special Obama-era amnesty for adults who came to the U.S. as children have criminal histories, according to an alarming report released this month by the government. Offenses committed by the illegal aliens seeking protection, benefits and rights under the policy known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) include murder, rape, weapon and assault charges. DACA has shielded nearly 800,000 illegal aliens under the age of 31 from deportation and allowed them to obtain work permits and drivers licenses. Obama launched the outrageous measure through executive order in 2012 to help children who came to the U.S. “through no fault of their own.” The Trump administration tried to end DACA in 2017 but open borders groups sued to keep it going and now the Supreme Court is set to decide the matter.
Regardless of how the high court may rule, the fact remains that a big chunk of DACA applicants have arrest records, according to the figures released by U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the Homeland Security agency that administers the nation’s lawful immigration system. The stats show that nearly 110,000 DACA requestors out of nearly 889,000 had arrest records, accounting for 12% of applicants. “Offenses in these arrest records include assault, battery, rape, murder and driving under the influence,” USCIS writes in a statement announcing the report. Here’s another disturbing fact; of approved DACA requestors with an arrest, a whopping 85% (67,861) were arrested right before the U.S. granted them amnesty. Nearly 25,000 DACA recipients with arrests had multiple arrests and 218 had more than 10 arrests. Incredibly, around one-fourth of the illegal immigrants with more than 10 arrests were approved by the government as of last month. In all, the government reveals that it has approved 79,398 DACA requestors with arrest records. Not all the delinquents are approved, the figures show. More than 100,000 with criminal arrests were denied or terminated.
Most of the arrested DACA approvals involve driving infractions and immigration related civil and criminal offenses, but thousands were granted amnesty after committing serious crimes. Nearly 8,000 illegal immigrants granted protection under DACA committed theft or larceny, the records show, and nearly 7,000 drug-related offenses. More than 4,000 were apprehended for driving under the influence, 3,421 for battery and 3,308 for assault. Thousands of others rewarded with DACA committed vandalism, burglary, offenses against children and weapons crimes. Hundreds of others were approved for DACA despite arrests for sexual abuse and rape, kidnapping or trafficking, hit and run, embezzlement and a variety of other serious offenses. Fifteen illegal aliens with murder charges got DACA as well as 15 street gang members and two arrested for child pornography. Most of the DACA candidates were arrested between the age of 19 and 22 though tens of thousands were also arrested between 23 and 26, well into adulthood. Mexicans account for the overwhelming majority of DACA recipients arrested (91,272) followed by El Salvador (4,998), Honduras (4,597) and Guatemala (4,304).

b>Texas Gov. Abbott and Lt. Gov. Patrick know the true cost of illegal and immigrants and refugees is far greater than any official estimates and amounts to over $50,000 each annually in costs considering welfare, housing, crime, medical, education and that the true numbers are 50 million illegals and their children. The total cost is TWO TRILLION 500 BILLION A YEAR and that’s why we have a national debt, huge student loans, and low pensions. These unwelcome immigrants are strangling the middle class, destroying our infrastructure, depressing wages, and spreading crime, disease, and poverty wherever they are settled.

Can you point me to the source for that amount. When I said to my libtard son that the illegals were costing us trillions of dollars he accused me of being “handled” by FOX, indicating I was lying….I would love to be able to show him something with these figures. Thanks.

I’m going to assemble the evidence and send it along to you shortly. It’s all public information. I include the impact on lost wages in my calculations and they are immense costs to the legitimate economy plus the billions in foreign transfer payments that rob the economy of tens of billions annually. If you are not an economist the impact of these transfer payments is difficult to understand. For example, if a company has a payroll of 2 million the people will use this money for groceries, food, gasoline, haircuts. This money is then injected into the economy and the recipients buy the same over and over again. So, the 2 million we start with has at least a 20 million impact. If, instead this money is transferred abroad itis not recirculated and the economy suffers proportionately. It’s estimated that our 40 million illegals send about $4,000 annually abroad each. That’s 160 billion which reduces our economy by $1.6 Trillion. The Impact is horrific, to say the least.
Ite estimated that each illegal will have 1.5 children. The total cost of education is about $30,000 per child per year. This means $30,000 x 60,000,000 is $1.8 Trillion a year.
