Two guards protecting a Berlin synagogue in the district of Mitte detained a Syrian man who apparently sought to enter the building with a knife on Friday.
According to a report in the Bild newspaper, the Damascus-born man said “Allahu akhbar”’ or “God is Great” – a phrase frequently uttered before or during radical Islamist terrorist attacks.
Actually the accurate translation of “Allah is greater” – greater than what? Greater than YOUR g-d.
The guards drew their firearms and police were notified. A police spokeswoman said the guards kept their weapons holstered but the man ignored them. The security guards said “Knife away and stop immediately.”
The Bild reported that the Syrian man did not drop the knife and repeated sentences in Arabic. The guards remained at distance with their firearms out until police appeared and sprayed an irritant gas in the face of the man.
The authorities arrested the man and no additional weapons were found on him or in his apartment. There were no injuries.
The police released the man from custody.

Sometimes I think these Arab jerks do this because they got their keesters handed to them in 1967 and 1973.
Two Israeli armored brigades (the southern one nearly wiped out, but reinforcements arrived the next day) held off an entire Syrian tank Army. About an 8 to 1 tank superiority. And the Syrians lost. The Israeli PM sent a message to the troops on the Golan Heights “You have saved the people of Israel!!”
That’s really got to stick the the Syrians psyche.

The Syrians really fought well and followed soviet doctrine well but the Israeli troops were simply and superbly better. BUT It was a very near thing. There are numerous books on that battle but try to find the one about it written by one of the surviving battalion commanders. In addition the modified centurion was the best tank by far and far better than the T60s and even the new(then) T72 but the surprise of all was by the reinforcements, who used the Israeli Sherman as only its (and the Centurion) suspension could handle the rocky Golan (unlike the then modern US tanks M60 IIRC). A tank, almost 32 years old and called the Ronson by the soviets and the 3 second fuse by the Brits(as it burst into flames always when hit), upgunned, increased armour and a diesel engine(and far less fire risk) and it did an excellent job. Had the risk not been appreciated by at least one person who counted,and the reserve mobilization begun early in the north, Israel would have been lost.

I’ve never met a woman who knows as much about military history as you. Were you a history major? A member of the military?
I used to know an Jewish WW2 veteran from the 10th Armored Division he said Shermans were easy meat for most any German anti-tank weapon and most all of their tanks from the modified Mark IV on up.
The IShermans were also upgunned — I believe they used a 90mm French cannon and specially modified turret to house it.
I often wonder where the Israelis got all those Shermans.
Your observation about the HVSS suspension the Shermans had is interesting and maybe partly explains why they picked the Shermans at all.

From memory the British had shown how to upgun the Sherman with the firefly. The brits said that they wanted to fit in a 76mm 17lb antitank gun but the US said no bigger gun than the useless 75 was possible but a UK armour engineer said why not just turn the gun on its side. which they did and hence the firefly…the best antitank tank the allies had. IIRC (again) the Israelis mostly used a standard NATO 105mm on both the superShermans and the modified Centurions. As for obtaining Shermans? they were purchasable everywhere by the early 1960s like the T34s were at the end of the cold war.

It could have been anywhere as they were surplus even in south America in the late 1950s as IIRC the M48 and earlier models had replaced them

In their original design, they were a deathtrap and even the Japanese on Okinawa and Iwo Jima has them sussed out. However they were reliable, user friendly and easy/cheap to manufacture.

The Sherman could defeat any tank the Japanese produced during WW2. The Japanese were still using riveted hull construction for their tanks.

They used antitank guns and very successfully vs Shermans on those two islands. Shermans were still useful but the cost accelerated as the Japs were ready for them.

The flamethrowing Shermans were devastating on Okinawa. AT guns are very vulnerable and it’s all the Japanese troops had — unlike say, the Germans who had panzershreks, panzerfausts and the 88mm dual purpose artillery piece. I’ve never read about the Japanese having any particularly deadly AT guns either.

And at the Suez, the Israelis crossed the canal and swept up the west side, destroying the Egyptian forces there, then crossed back. What a bold maneuver.

It was nowhere near as easy as it sounds. The manoeuvre was brilliant but the Chinese Farm battle took many lives and while the crossing cut off two Egyptian divisions they did not destroy them and on purpose as they knew that the soviets would push a halt and needed bargaining chips. When the Israelis first counterattacked after the Egyptian canal crossing,they suffered massive AFV casualties vs the sagger missile barrage and countering that was the main tactical need that decided where and when.

Ohh I add that they also were badly defeated in 1967 which they fully deserved and ALL Arabs were badly defeated in 1948 when they had superiority in every facet and the muslim gangbang of Israel failed and no one in the west helped at all with any impact. The muslim women used to follow their men into battle so that they could carve up the enemy wounded and loot the dead and the buildings. Never forget that the women are just as bad.

Helped at all? Hayull Hairy-Ass Truman made it illegal to sell surplus small arms to Israel. Many American, and a few Christians .. but predominately Jews, raised funds to purchase munitions. Hairy-Ass had many of them arrested and prosecuted. We’re not talking about giving no aid, or assistance, to Israel. We’re talking about making the purchase of war surplus, in order to send to Israel, against Truman’s orders.

Perhaps, and I am not really disagreeing, but without the US and western votes there would have been no Israel. In actual fact the useless French and the occupied Czechoslovakia gave most military aid…not for free obviously.

Very little military aid, for Israel, came from France. The vast majority came from the Czechs. And, even that had to be smuggled in, for the most part.
The American State Department declared an embargo on all weapons and war material to Israel. The embargo simply prevented a large part of this intended aid from reaching Israel.
The small trickle of supplies and arms reaching Israel from North America was accomplished by smuggling. The U.S. vote in favor of partition was only de facto reflecting the State Department’s care not to unnecessarily offend the Arab states whereas the Soviet vote recognized Israel de jure.

Umm IIRC the soviet delegate was absent when the vote was taken and that really hit the fan back in the Kremlin. I don’t disagree with much else except the role of France who gave more than you think, not that I have time for France as they did it just to annoy the US. But it was strange to see spitfires and Messerschmitt 109s on the same side. Truman had no idea of the degree of infiltration and corruption within the democrats until he discovered the role of Hopkins the traitor. However the Democrats would only back him for 1948 if he kept quiet about it all and then threatened him and his family. Once elected he really struggled against the bureaucracy and the actions of many of his “staff’ cannot be laid at his door. IMHO he was an honest man in an extremely corrupt party and when he declined to stand opposite Stevenson he really just gave the election to Eisenhauer. Probably the only honest democrat president. Many disagree with that but I suggest checking in detail.

Did you ever look into his cronies and how, many starting poor, ALL became filthy rich, during Hairy-Ass’s presidency?
When I was in kindergarten, our teacher asked us if anyone knew who was president, prior to Eisenhower (president at the time). I shot up my hand and was called on. I answered “Hairy-Ass Truman”. She grabbed me, dragged me to the sink,, and washed my mouth out with soap. I had no idea why, as that was what my father called Truman … and, not knowing what a “hairy-ass” was, thought it to be an actual name.
As all Democrat Party members, he (Truman) was as crooked as a dog’s hind leg.

How much evidence do you have that Truman was to blame? He wasn’t called “Honest Harry” for nothing. BUT the Democrats have ALWAYS been corrupt and that has never had anything to do with the president then elected. Some presidents are corrupt, I have absolutely no time for Carter but he was not corrupt but his party was. When their party is in power both parties have a feeding frenzy. look at Lincoln and how many cronies grew rich without him knowing about it or being able to do anything. That is THE problem with dominant political parties: the smug arrogance that they have as they know that their turn at the taxpayer’s trough will come.

Okay let’s agree to disagree. However do note that by 1948 he was no longer really in charge of policy and mostly a figurehead as he was never really recognized by the Democrat hierarchy. Carter who was (despite being a bleeding heart idiot) was also a decent man who could not stop the democrat elite and his own Christianity from taking advantage of him. Never forget that for all of his sins Truman allowed the nukes and saved more than a million allied and 18 million Jap lives. THAT took courage.

I believe the Czechs (go Czechs!) gave the Israelis the only combat aircraft they had in the ’48’ War of Independence: their knock-offs of the Me-109.

’48’ was a close shave for Israel. They had to abandon settlements to the muslums because they couldn’t defend everything. One armed, fortified Kibbutz was completely annihilated and East Jerusalem was left in the hands of the muslum enemy.

I don’t know. But if you grew up indoctrinated with a man made “religion” that tells you to persecute and murder everyone else bad things will happen. Add to that the belief that the only guarantee of being accepted into a perversion of heaven is to murder the infidel. What can possibly go wrong?
