“Town Without Pity” was Gene Pitney’s first hit. Its success was partly due to it being from the movie of the same name, with the star appeal of Kirk Douglas attracting a lot of attention. The song won the very first Golden Globe award for best original song, and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Song. This led to Pitney becoming the first pop singer to perform at the Oscars in 1962.

Pamela must’ve watched the film this past week, like I did. Ugh, it’s a tough one.

Kirk Douglas as an attorney defending US servicemen who had gang raped a young German woman. Her boyfriend was witness, tried to defend her against the attackers, but he was knocked unconscious. The servicemen are acquitted only because the girl has a breakdown while under intense questioning. She is unable complete her testimony, so under law the case is thrown out. She later commits suicide.

I honestly wish I hadn’t watched it. Yuck!

I’m a huge classic film buff, and there have long been rumors in Hollywood involving Kirk Douglas attacking young starlets. The worst rumor, even now, is that he raped Natalie Wood in the 50’s. That she never really recovered and became dependent on drugs and alcohol. Who knows…? It IS Hollyweird!

GREAT SONG though! OMG how I love Gene Pitney. Just wonderful. Thanks Pam!

Really Kirk Douglas, he who didn’t like John Wayne because the latter was a Conservative Republican, another case of a supposed liberal being worse than those they denounce

It’s incredible how that always works out. Hollywood liberals are the worst. Hypocrites every one!
