Drone strikes target world’s largest oil processing facility, Saudi oil field; attack claimed by Iranian-backed rebels

By Lucia I. Suarez Sang | Fox News September 14, 2019:

The world’s largest oil processing facility and a nearby oil field in Saudi Arabia were set ablaze early Saturday morning after reported drone attacks by Iranian-backed Yemeni rebels.

The Interior Ministry was quoted by state-run media as saying the fires at the Abqaiq oil processing facility in Buqyaq and the nearby Khurais oil field operated by Saudi Aramco were “targeted by drones.”

It wasn’t immediately clear if there were any injuries, nor what effect it would have on oil production in the kingdom.

Houthi rebels – who are backed by Iran in a yearslong Saudi-led war against them in Yemen – have reportedly claimed responsibility for the attacks and vowed that further attacks could be expected in the future.

The military spokesman Yahia Sarie said in a short address aired by Houthi’s Al-Masirah satellite news channel that the group launched 10 drones in a coordinated attack on the sites.

“The only option for the Saudi government is to stop attacking us,” he added.

State television showed footage showing smoke from the blazes clearly rising behind a correspondent.

This Saturday, Sept. 14, 2019, satellite image provided by NASA Worldview shows fires following Yemen’s Houthi rebels claiming a drone attack on two major oil installations in eastern Saudi Arabia. (NASA Worldview)

The smoke could be seen from space.

Saudi officials have not commented on who they think is behind the attacks. Saudi Aramco did not immediately respond to questions from the AP.

The oil facility processes sour crude oil into sweet crude, then later transports onto transshipment points on the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea. Estimates suggest it can process up to 7 million barrels of crude oil a day.

The Khurais oil field is believed to produce over 1 million barrels of crude oil a day. It has estimated reserves of over 20 billion barrels of oil, according to Aramco.

The plant has been targeted in the past by militants. Al Qaeda claimed suicide bombers tried but failed to attack the oil complex in February 2006.

The Saudi-led coalition has been battling the rebels since March 2015. The Iranian-backed Houthis hold Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, and other territory in the Arab world’s poorest country.

The war has become the world’s worst humanitarian crisis. The violence has pushed Yemen to the brink of famine and killed more than 90,000 people since 2015, according to the U.S.-based Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project, or ACLED, which tracks the conflict.

Say MBS-

I understand you have a bit of problem with your neighbors. Always helps to have friends in your corner. Now I realize you have an 800 pound gorilla- the USA- covering your back, but the gorilla is a bit tempermentel, shall we say, and besides, it helps to have friends in a fight (and the fewer enemies you have, the better).

Seems to me, you got a choice to make. You can be pals with whiney folks who call themselves “Palestinians”, are governed by a bunch of murderous liars (which I realize poses no problem to you), and would throw you under the bus in a New York minute, just as they did the Kuwaitis when some other of your neighbors gobbled them up.

Or you make nice with Israel. Yeah, they are small, but they punch above their weight, and they also have a problem with your neighbors. Now the fact that Israel gives more rights to these “Palestinians” than any Arab state is another matter of no concern to you- still, kinda makes a feller wonder about all the hullabaloo directed at tiny Israel.

Now I understand there is no love between you and Israel- but you gotta admit those “Palestinians” aren’t exactly Allah’s greatest gift to the world. Besides, I know that deep down you don’t care about Moslems being oppressed- noticed you couldn’t be bothered signing that letter in Turtle Bay condemning the Chinese for putting Uighurs in concentration camps and the like. So, while you’ll never be great friends with Israel, the enemy of your enemy is at very least a handy guy to have around, don’tcha think?

My advice- make nice with the Israelis. Maybe a base or two on the Persian Gulf? Accept the fact- formally- that Israel exists and has the right to live in secure borders. No point in going down with the ship for a bunch of losers called “Palestinians”, now, is there?

Well said. It should be obvious that they don’t care about their fellow Muslims, they simply hate Jews, and they even hate Jews to their own detriment, and this insanity is not limited to the Muslims; it is just as applicable to Europeans as well. Not too long ago, in Yemen, the Saudis bombed a school bus full of Muslim children killing dozens, and no one cared. After Gulf War 1, Saudis deported hundreds of thousands of “Palestinians” and no one cared. I could go on and on, but you’re smart enough.

Also, having the U.S. on their side is, as you alluded to, is not always a guarantee. Bolton, although not perfect, would more reassuring, but there are those, both on the right and left, who are obsessed with his projection of strength making him a “neocon warmonger” and falsely interpreting this as him saying that war is the only option. Rand Paul, for example, fails to understand foreign policy. He doesn’t realize that oil is a global commodity and even though we have tons of it here, its price is set globally, not regionally, and a situation involving Saudi oil production would send prices soaring and cause harm to our economy. It’s easy in fantasy land to complain about wars, but in the real world it benefits us to maintain global stability and Rand doesn’t seem to understand this. He can scream Constitution, Constitution, Constitution all he wants, but the world today is a very different place than it was in the 1700’s. Of course Rand was also upset that American-born Anwar al-Awlaki was brought to justice without due process (which is laughable). Sorry Rand, but in my opinion, when you go to a foreign county and declare war on the U.S. and plot to kill countless Americans, I’m more concerned with defending America and protecting Americans, than I am with Constitutional rights of some Muslim piece of garbage in a foreign land whose actions amount to a renunciation of his American citizenship!

A thoughtful reply!

Wars have never- at least since the Peloponnesian Wars- been fought by Marquis de Queensbury rules.

Sorry Rand, but in my opinion, when you go to a foreign county and declare war on the U.S. and plot to kill countless Americans, I’m more concerned with defending America and protecting Americans, than I am with Constitutional rights …

Enemy combatant. Kill him- er, ok, in modern military speak, “service” him!

You think they would have air warning against any srike by what ever means. They should have had wespons to shoot the drones down.

Where were the jamming frequencies to stop the drones, maybe even trace tge frequencies.

Europe has flooded the Iranians with tons of money allowing them to circumvent sanctions and purchase state-of-the-art technology so as to diminish effectiveness of whatever defenses may have been in place.

The only SMART people over in the Middle East is ISRAEL. Muslims are just too stupid. THEY WILL KILL EACH OTHER before they figure anything out.

Israel should drop tons of bacon on Iran and other Muslim countries, or at least, vats or pork grease.

We need to keep out of this fight. The Saudi government has their own military and air force that should respond.

These Muslims really do want to go back to the stone-age. I agree that America needs to STAY OUT OF THAT FIGHT. America has her own oil. Let Israel take care of things over there. Let’s get back to MAKING AMERICA GREAT AGAIN AND KEEPING HER GREAT BY VOTING OUT DEMONRATS AND LIBERALS IN ALL UPCOMING ELECTIONS.

…and we (the U.S.) needs to keep increasing domestic oil production…so we are NOT hostages to Iran’s action which affect mid-east production of oil. It is time to increase drilling…including there Atlantic!

That will NOT stop US gas prices at the pump from increasing.

Correct, in the short term since prices qre based on “futures”….and the near term prices will increase based on current situation. My comment was made to provide oil insurance and a solid buffer against future middle east troubles by making us 110% self sufficient….

I cannot believe that the worlds largest oil processing plant did not have defensive capability to stop incoming drones. It almost causes one to think this may be a false flag event in order to implement a much larger attack in retaliation for the false flag. A set up, in other words. Keep your eyes open for what comes next an we will see if the dots connect.
