Trump orders Navy to rescind medals from lawyers who prosecuted SEAL Eddie Gallagher

The prosecution was troubled long before the not guilty verdict. The lead prosecutor was removed from the case after being caught attaching tracking software to email messages sent to defense lawyers. Then another SEAL who was given immunity by testifying from the stand that he was the one who had killed the captive.

Nonetheless, the Navy hosted an award ceremony on July 10 for four lawyers who worked on the case, as well as four legal support workers, all of whom were awarded Navy Achievement Medals, according to Task and Purpose, an online news site focused on the military and veterans.

The left is bemoaning that Trump did this in public. The left, who entire mission is dumping all over America, every day in every way, is what? Concerned with the optics for the military? The despise the military. And they herald Obama for going around the world apologizing for America.

The NY Times writes;

Other presidents have been dissatisfied with military prosecutors, but experts could not recall another instance in recent times when a commander in chief intervened so directly in a case like this. In other administrations, they said, any objections to medals would usually be expressed privately and resolved outside of public view.”

“What makes this unusual is the president’s decision to do it through Twitter, thus making it a very public rebuke of everyone involved,” said Peter D. Feaver, a specialist on civilian-military relations at Duke University and former national security aide to Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

“Of course, the president as commander in chief has the prerogative to give his rebukes however he wishes,” Mr. Feaver added, “but the approach President Trump has chosen to take seems calculated to inflame rather than calm the issue.”

The NY Times is lamenting the transparency.

Trump orders Navy to rescind medals from lawyers who prosecuted SEAL Eddie Gallagher

By: NY Post, August 1, 2019:

President Trump said Wednesday that he would order the Navy to rescind medals given to military lawyers who prosecuted a former Navy SEAL the president supported during his court martial on murder charges.

“The Prosecutors who lost the case against SEAL Eddie Gallagher (who I released from solitary confinement so he could fight his case properly), were ridiculously given a Navy Achievement Medal,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

“I have directed the Secretary of the Navy Richard Spencer & Chief of Naval Operations John Richardson to immediately withdraw and rescind the awards,” Trump continued.

”I am very happy for Eddie Gallagher and his family!”

The four attorneys who prosecuted Gallagher were given Navy Achievement Medals last month, the Navy Times reported.

Gallagher, 40, was acquitted by a military jury July 3 of a murder charge in connection with the 2017 death of an ISIS fighter in Iraq and released after getting credit for time served.

The commando thanked Trump for intervening in his case.

Trump returned the praise, tweeting, “Congratulations to Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher, his wonderful wife Andrea, and his entire family. You have been through much together. Glad I could help!”

The president had Gallagher transferred from a military brig to a less restrictive facility.
