Freedom of speech is the foundation of a free society. Without it, a tyrant can wreak havoc unopposed, while his opponents are silenced.
Putting up with being offended is essential in a pluralistic society in which people differ on basic truths. If a group will not bear being offended without resorting to violence, that group will rule unopposed while everyone else lives in fear, while other groups curtail their activities to appease the violent group. This results in the violent group being able to tyrannize the others.
If speech that offends a group is outlawed, that group has absolute power, and a free society is destroyed. A group that cannot be criticized cannot be opposed. It can work its will no matter what it is, and no one will be able to say anything to stop it.

Inoffensive speech needs no protection. The First Amendment was developed precisely in order to protect speech that was offensive to some, in order to prevent those who had power from claiming they were offended by speech opposing them and silencing the powerless.

While speaking outside the Homestead Temporary Shelter for Unaccompanied Children in Homestead, Florida, on Tuesday, Rep. Frederica Wilson demanded that anyone who mocks members of Congress online be prosecuted.
“Those people who are online making fun of members of Congress are a disgrace, and there is no need for anyone to think that is unacceptable [sic],” she said. “We’re gonna shut them down and work with whoever it is to shut them down, and they should be prosecuted,” she added. “You cannot intimidate members of Congress, frighten members of Congress. It is against the law, and it’s a shame in this United States of America.”
Translation: To HELL with the First Amendment right to free speech.

A May 2019 Gallup poll recorded a 20% approval rating for Congress, whose approval rating has not hit 30% in 10 years.

Does that mean everyone who mocks Republicans on social media should also be prosecuted? If that’s the case, half the country will end up in jail.
Note to Frederica Wilson: There’s a reason we have the First Amendment. If you can’t handle Americans exercising their God-given rights, then you shouldn’t be in office.

Wow. Politicians like Frederica Wilson have no regard for the Constitution of the United States, or the Rights of Man (the species, not the sex). They have no regard for the precepts for which their betters- men like George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine (a real pain, and a personal favorite)- risked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. Their version of government is tyrannical, and probably based on plunder of the most productive members of society.
Our republic is imperiled by these thugs.

To an outsider, it seems that in that outtake Miss Wilson has trouble deciding whether she’s at a Michael Jackson tribute concert, a country and western concert or she’s standing for president in some African banana republic.
Someone could drop her a line and suggest to her that life as a public servant is not supposed to involve an aping of the worst excesses of tinsel town or a fancy dress ball when presiding over public affairs but the sober and effective discharge of a public obligation to the satisfaction of those who put you there.
I’ve witnessed too many African despots looking and sounding like her with their demands for “respect” to have any patience with such people.
She is fortunate she is where she is, she might not enjoy an “exchange of views” over her conduct with me.

This incident underscores what I regard as a fatal flaw in our representative democracy, and, indeed, that of much of the rest of the world’s democracies; viz. universal suffrage. The appalling ignorance of Ms Wilson is likely exceeded by a large percentage of her constitutency: after all, they voted to have this clown represent them. Such voters have no understanding of “sober and effective discharge of a public obligation”, but rather tend to view government as a source of free goodies.
In some manner- I’m not sure how- the voting franchise needs to be restricted. The founders of the USA envisioned “a stake in society”, which them them mean property requirement as a pre-requisite to vote. Ok, they also envisioned certain anatomical qualifications that I believe you lack. Well, nobody’s perfect (er, I am referring to them, the founding fathers of the US of A, not you, ahem).
I’m not sure it matters much how the voting franchise is restricted, as long as it is restricted (ok, some limitations may apply). For the USA, I might favor a good understanding of the structure of government and a broad understanding of the Constitution and the intent of the founding fathers of this republic. But demonstratng the ability to solve a second order linear differential equation (make it with constant coefficients) might serve as well. Just something other than a body temperature of about 98.6 F.
The cause of good government is not promoted by the likes of Frederica Wilson.

Even if you do pay taxes but are simultaneously receiving any kind of welfare benefits paid for by the taxpayer cancels out your right to vote.
That might be difficult to define, let alone administer. Patent protection- is that “welfare”? If you work in the defense industry, you can’t vote? Sorry, I ain’t gonna buy that. But if you left it at just a requirement to pay taxes, I might give you idea some limited support- my major exception being there should be not personal income tax!

Three things come to mind……overwhelming number of foreigners (legal and illegal) who refuse to assimilate and become Americans; so many representatives (both parties) in our Congress who are on the take from special interest; and our failure to teach our kids REAL history and about patriotism and what it means to be blessed to be an American….
If we as a country hadn’t dropped the ball on those three things….we wouldn’t be where we are today.
I would add a fourth reason….failure to help our children keep the faith in God…but the non-religious can just ignore that one if you choose.
