Pennsylvania is expected to become the third state to ban child marriage entirely. Child weddings are being conducted at a Philadelphia mosque — sexual offenses that range from rape and assault to ‘forcible compulsion’   — so the law is necessary. But is it islamophobic?

Before the onslaught of Muslim immigration laws against such things were not necessary. Who would marry a six year-old? Muhammad, the prophet of Islam would. That is why it is sanctioned in Islam and a growing problem everywhere Muslims immigrate to. Child marriage is sanctioned in Islam. Islamic tradition records that Muhammad married his favorite wife at the tender age of six, consummated his marriage with (i.e., raped) Aisha when she was nine, and the resultant fact that child marriage is accepted in wide swaths of the Islamic world. Child marriage has abundant attestation in Islamic tradition and […].

Pennsylvania to become third state to ban child marriages

‘Marriages for child brides have an 80% failure rate,’ lawmaker says.

Did he really just say that?

By INN, June 25, 2019:

Pennsylvania is expected to become the third state to ban child marriage entirely, NBC News reported.

The state follows the example set by New Jersey and Delaware, and is part of an overall trend to limit or ban child marriages. Prior to 2016, over half of US states had no minimum age for marriage. Now, most have set the floor at 16 or 17 years of age.

This year, Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Louisiana, Nevada, Ohio and Utah – seven of the twenty states with no minimum age for marriage – have set limits, and both Maine and New Hampshire raised their minimum marriage age to sixteen, with Maine banning all exceptions.

Pennsylvania state Rep. Jesse Topper, a Republican, told NBC: “I can think of no positive effect on society for allowing children to marry at any age under what we classify as an adult, and that’s where I decided to go with the bill.”

“Marriages for child brides — and most of them are young women, but it could be any children — have an 80 percent failure rate. What that tells me is it’s not something that is ‘Prince Charming, happily ever after.'”

His bill has already passed the state House of Representatives, and it is expected to be approved by the state Senate, News4Tucson reported.

CNA quoted a 2017 PBS “Frontline” report, which noted that at least 207,459 child marriages took place in the US, and the youngest partners were just 12 years old.

A majority of states have minimum marriage ages at 16 or 17, with Georgia, Kentucky, New York, Ohio, Texas and Virginia’s laws including exceptions for court-emancipated minors. Prior to 2016 — when Virginia became the first state to put its marriage age into law — more than half of the states had no minimum marriage age fixed by statute.

Two states require parental consent for adults over eighteen: Nebraska, where both partners must be over 19, and Mississippi, where both must be over 21 in order to wed against their parents’ wishes. But in many states, underage minors are allowed to wed with their parents’ consent – a loophole which allows most child marriages to take place.

Jeanne Smoot, the senior counsel for public policy and strategy at the Tahirih Justice Center, a nonprofit that advocates for women and girls, told NBC News: “I think that one of the larger concerns that we have is even as we recognize the overall progress is significant from 2016 to now that the patchwork of state laws continues to put all girls at risk of potential forced marriages or other harm through child marriages, given the ease with which they can be taken out of their home state into another state with lax or no laws.”

It should be banned everywhere. If a child is being forced, then they have no where to run, and because they are under age, they would get sent back to the family.
Is Cair or anyone like this arguing against it?

Deb, my parents-in-law were 16 (m-i-l) and 14 (f-i-l) when they were married. Now that was according to a long-standing Korean culture of the day, where semi-arranged marriages were common and where the newly betrothed waited a couple of years to take up residence together. Their marriage was more successful than many (most?) American marriages today.

Now I’m not saying that is a model for today, but I think it does point to the difficulty of making completely general statements on the matter.

BTW, and OT, my mother-in-law grew up when it was considered unnecessary for girls to learn how to read. So she, unlike her brother, could not go to school. But she was a smart, determined little girl, and when her hapless older brother got home from school, she beat his lessons out of him- she was fully literate!

I understand your point. There also has been studies done on the development of the brain, and the kids these days, their brains are developing at a slower pace. Yes there are few exceptions with some that marry that young. If it is real they can wait till 18.

I would not let my daughter get her license until 18, because I knew she just really was not ready and that was the right thing to do for everyone else on the road. lol

I have not heard that, and it’s a rather frightening thought. Can you point me in the direction of any considered discussion of the phenomenon?

LOL, people used to say the same thing about television way back in the dark ages. These days I’d wonder if people spend as much time video gaming as they do tweeting/instagramming/facebooking/twittering. I’ve seen people eating dinner at restaurants and all of them were on their smartphones.

In a relatively non-tribal culture, consideration must always be first and foremost towards the well-being of the INDIVIDUAL who is entering into the marriage. There is no excuse for forcing a 14- and 16-year olds into marriage in a society that acknowledges and values individuality and respects the right of each person to make his/her own choice about when to enter into a binding and sexually intimate relationship. Whether tribal pressures and familiarity made some arranged marriages of children “more successful” is irrelevant.

I don’t know that anyone could claim that my parents-in-law were forced into marriage. At an admittedly young age, they lived up to the expectations of their families and society. The Hermit Kingdom was a very different society in the early 20th century than it is today. And if life expectancy is- oh, just as a guess, 50- very different norms quite reasonably may prevail.

Anni Cyrus, on the other hand, was forced into marriage at 14.

Pennsylvania will become the third state to ban child marriage entirely. Perhaps I miss-read some of the commentary but if Pennsylvania is only the third state to legislate a total ban of child marriage; then others will not commit to this evident perverse practice of pedophilia and child abuse, both sexually and psychologically. If other states drag their asses on this essential issue opting not to act, I hold little hope for the morality and humanity of this nation.

Spot on, Ziggy. Also, the ones who do marry children…let’s face it, MOZZLEMS…will continue to do so, to h e ll with the law. Let’s see if the state actually ENFORCES the law, not just passes it.

Good point ed, the UK has FGM laws on its’ books, and with thousands and thousands of such “operations”, how many charges have there been? It is indeed one thing to make a law and as you say, quite another to enforce it.

At what point do we collectively say “Enough, why the hell do we need this”. To be compassionate ??? To be multi-cultural ??? It’s bad enough they do it back home but don’t bring it here – what are we doing – it’s insanity.

You are right, Mr. Jones. Why DO we let them practice their barbarian ways here ?? Actually, why do we let them come here to begin with, knowing that ultimately they want to subvert us to their evil way of life ??

Child marriage has not been an issue because who would issue a marriage license to a child, or a Christian priest or minister,or rabbi officiate.Only Muslims endorse this perversion. It must be stopped in its tracks. It should also be noted that any child who objects may be killed to “save the honor” of the father or family.
