Indian police raid Islamic State cell with links to Sri Lanka bombing mastermind

By: Devjyot Ghoshal,  Reuters, June 13, 2019:

NEW DELHI (Reuters) – Indian police raided seven locations in the southern city of Coimbatore on Wednesday in pursuit of a suspected Islamic State cell with links to the suicide bombers who killed over 250 people in Sri Lanka in April, officials said.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) said it was questioning seven men from Coimbatore, aged between 26 and 38, on suspicion of propagating Islamic State ideology to recruit people for carrying out attacks in southern India.

Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombings in neighbouring Sri Lanka and has been looking to bolster its presence in the sub-continent after being driven out of its self-styled caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

Last month Islamic State claimed the establishment of a “province” in India after a clash between jihadists and security forces in the contested, northern Kashmir region.

“We had recently registered a fresh case against a new ISIS module in Coimbatore,” an NIA official told Reuters, using another name for Islamic State, explaining Wednesday’s raids during which a number of electronic devices were also seized.

The main accused in the case, Mohammed Azarudeen, had been Facebook friends with Zahran Hashim, the suspected mastermind of Sri Lanka’s Easter Sunday bombings, NIA said in a statement.

Hashim, a radical preacher, led the National Tawheed Jamaath, one of the two local Islamist groups that were involved in the synchronised blasts in Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital, and two other towns.

The NIA, India’s federal agency responsible for fighting militant groups, has conducted multiple searches in southern India this year in connection with a case concerning 15 people who apparently left the country to join Islamic State in 2016.

In late April, the NIA arrested a 29-year-old man from the southern state of Kerala for suspected involvement in a planned suicide attack.

The agency has also made more than a dozen arrests in a case involving an Islamic State-inspired group that was conspiring to carry out attacks around New Delhi.

Why is it AFTER THE FACT they are concerned and find these people?
Why weren’t they on top of the situation before this happened?
Isn’t it because Christianity is marginalized in India too? Shamed into at least doing something now?
Do they wish to believe that other religions other than Islam won’t be affected if they IGNORE Islamic attacks on Christianity?

The Indian subcontinent is the birthplace of four of the world’s major religions; namely Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Sikhism. According to the 2011 census,
79.8% of the population of India practices Hinduism,
14.2% adheres to Islam,
2.3% adheres to Christianity, and
1.7% adheres to Sikhism.

Zoroastrianism and Judaism also have an ancient history in India, and each has several thousands of Indian adherents. India has the largest population of people adhering to Zoroastrianism (i.e. Parsis and Iranis) and Bahá’í Faith in the world, even though these religions are not native to India. Many other world religions also have a relationship with Indian spirituality, such as the Baha’i faith which recognizes the Buddha and Krishna as manifestations of the God Almighty.

And isn’t it strange that Zoroastrianism has pretty much ceased to exist in the country of its birth, Iran.

felix1999, Indian intelligence cried itself hoarse to the Sri-Lankan authorities that attacks on churches were imminent. They even sent messages on the day of the bombings itself, but all were ignored. There are two reasons why the Sri-Lankan government didn’t act with the seriousness it warranted. One is that it is very fractured and a lot of infighting is going on between the President, Prime Minister and other leaders like Rajapaksha. The second reason is that the Sri-Lankan authorities have not forgiven India for it’s part in it’s civil war on the LTTE so they viewed the warnings with suspicion. I will add also that the Sri-Lankans pretty much forgot about national security once the LTTE was vanquished even though it had built up a formidable intelligence setup to defeat it. Very tragic.

India is once again a principal target of the jihadists. Unless the Hindus want to sacrifice another 200 million lives it is best to ban the religion and move the adherents out of the country before it’s too late.
