On the eve of election, PM Theresa May’s House leader Leadsom resigns in protest over ‘new’ Brexit plan

71

As you know, because of May’s mis-handling of Brexit, we are having elections for the EU Parliament tomorrow. The Conservative share of the vote is predicted to crumble – possibly to less that ten percent. Although the EU Parliament is little more than a talking shop, the significance of the poll cannot be ignored. The Brexit party, led by Farage is expected to take the biggest slice of the cake. (Farage, appears to have a very low understanding of the ROP – can that just be ignorance?)

Andrea Leadsom has this evening resigned from her post in the Cabinet. If the results for the Tories are really bad, I reckon May will be out by the weekend. Whether the Tories can ever rebuild themselves is anyone’s guess – I certainly wouldn’t put any money on it.

Theresa May has proved to be the most inept Prime Minister and the worst leader of the Conservative party we have ever had – even Chamberlain did, belatedly take steps to re-arm our military in the months leading up to WW2 (the Hurricane and Spitfire fighter planes didn’t grow on trees).

Tommy Robinson is standing in the North West region and has been hard on the trail visiting working class areas – where the genuine locals appear to be receiving him well. On the basis of previous elections, he needs to poll somewhere in the region of 180,000 votes to win a seat – it is a big ask. The efforts of the establishment to repress him will help harden his core support. Sadly for him, better off ‘middle class’ voters may have had little chance to see anything about what he stands for and will just accept the bullsh*t spread by the BBC etc.

Theresa May’s House leader Leadsom resigns over ‘new’ Brexit plan

By RT, May 22, 2019:

House of Commons leader Andrea Leadsom has resigned from the government, citing frustration with Prime Minister Theresa May’s latest Brexit plan and “dangerous” proposals such as the second referendum.

“I no longer believe that our approach will deliver on the referendum result,” Leadsom wrote in her resignation letter, handed to May on Wednesday. Leadsom stated that the chance of a second Brexit referendum – offered by May to MPs who agree to back her withdrawal agreement bill – is “dangerously divisive,” and could risk “undermining our union.”

“The tolerance to those in Cabinet who have advocated policies contrary to the Government’s position has led to a complete breakdown of collective responsibility,” Leadsom, who had opposed any deal that may involve a customs union with the EU, added.

The chance of a customs union made it impossible for Leadsom to support May’s deal, she told BBC Radio 4 on Tuesday.

“I have been very clear for years – leaving the EU means leaving the single market, leaving the customs union, taking back control of our money, border and laws,” she said.

Leadsom’s resignation is the 36th ministerial resignation under May, and the 21st over the PM’s handling of Brexit. May now faces increasing pressure to resign or call a general election, with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn describing a fresh election as a chance to “break the Brexit deadlock and give the country a say.”

A Downing Street spokesman said that May’s office is “disappointed that she has chosen to resign,” and added that May “remains focused on delivering the best Brexit people voted for.”

Leadsom’s departure comes not just at a critical time for May at home, but a critical time for her party in Europe. The Tories are already slated to perform poorly in Thursday’s European Parliament elections, with the party predicted to take around 12 percent of the vote. Labour aren’t in great shape either, forecast to win 18 percent.

Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party has surged in the polls, and is predicted to take 35 percent, more than Labour and the Conservatives combined.
