Link-banning Is Facebook’s Terrifying New Censorship Tool

23

For years. we have been fighting the tyrannical censorship of conservative voices in what is now the public square – social media. We filed suit against the DoJ in 2016 challenging Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (CDA) under the First Amendment. Section 230 provides immunity from lawsuits to Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, thereby permitting these social media giants to engage in government-sanctioned censorship and discriminatory business practices free from legal challenge. It came to nothing. No one heeded our warnings. Now they are outright banning websites and anyone linking to them while allowing real hate like Holocaust denial.

So much immense power in the hands of a dangerous few.

Bokhari: Link-banning Is Facebook’s Terrifying New Censorship Tool

The banning of multiple political commentators from Facebook and Instagram, including conservatives Paul Joseph Watson and Laura Loomer, is an outrage against the ideals of an open Internet on its own. But beyond the bans on individuals, Facebook has deployed an even more terrifying tool of censorship — link-banning.

By Allum Bokhari, Breitbart, May 4, 2019″

Story continues below advertisement

The mainstream media were, of course, tipped off about the bans in advance, and the Atlantic’s report contains the following eye-opening detail. Not only has Alex Jones’ personal account now been banned from Facebook, in addition to PrisonPlanet editor-in-chief and YouTube star Paul Joseph Watson, but all links to Infowars sites are now banned across the platform. Share Infowars too often, and you’ll be banned too.

Via The Atlantic:

Infowars is subject to the strictest ban. Facebook and Instagram will remove any content containing Infowars videos, radio segments, or articles (unless the post is explicitly condemning the content), and Facebook will also remove any groups set up to share Infowars content and events promoting any of the banned extremist figures, according to a company spokesperson. (Twitter, YouTube, and Apple have also banned Jones and Infowars.)

This takes censorship on social media to altogether new levels. If you post Infowars content on Facebook or Facebook-owned Instagram, your post will be removed. If you post it repeatedly, you will be banned.

Note the wording, too — you’ll be banned unless you’re condemning Infowars. Facebook is now brazenly using its power to reward certain political positions and punish others.

This isn’t censorship of an individual or a group over a violation of terms of service. It’s the wholesale ban of an independent media site, which for all the criticism levied against it, has had a major impact on the politics of the United States.

And Facebook has made no pretense, as it has in other cases where the pages of news sites have been banned, that the ban occurred because of alleged “inauthentic behavior,” by which it means the use of multiple pages or automated accounts to promote a site’s content.

That Facebook is dispensing with its previous excuses shows that the social network has become emboldened to regulate the flow of news on its platform, knowing that no consequences are headed its way from Republicans on Capitol Hill or in the White House.

Through algorithm changes and the prioritization of so-called “authoritative sources,” Facebook has spent the last two years positioning itself to control the news you see on your feed. Now it’s taken control of the news you share with your friends too. Post a link to a disapproved website? It’ll be deleted. Post it again? You’ll likely be banned.

This is a formula not just for banning websites, commentators, and political figures, but for banning all their supporters as well.

And because their bans nearly exclusively target the right, potentially thousands of Republicans and Trump supporters won’t be able to use Facebook to encourage their friends to vote on election day 2020 — a massive advantage for the Democrats on one of the internet’s most politically influential platforms.

President Donald Trump may have cooled on sources like Infowars (unlike his campaign days, when he appeared on Alex Jones’ show). But this isn’t just an attack on particular individuals or sources. Whatever your criticisms of Infowars — and there are many — this is an attack on the independent media as a whole. It’s an unprecedented tilting of the scales in favor of Democrat-approved media, and it will have an enormous impact on the 2020 election.

That’s the point of course. Since Trump won in 2016, Silicon Valley has been animated by a single mission — ensure it never happens again.

Beyond the leaks showing that Facebook is deliberately deboosting conservative figures (when it isn’t outright banning them), that YouTube and Google are pushing conservative content out of their top search results, just look at the video-recorded weeping of Google executives on stage after Trump won. They hate him, they hate his supporters, and they will do everything they can to suppress them before election day. The only question is, what’s Trump going to do about it?

Gee, the brilliant Ted Cruz is SILENT again?
Never mind. With Trump’s help he was re-elected.
Jim Jordan and Devin Nunes are busy with indictments but what about the rest of the GOP?
Can anything be done with the FCC? How about a rule or policy change that doesn’t need swamp involvement?

The only way that the FCC could have anything to do with this .. is if obimbo’s “net neutrality” was still in force. That gives the government the ability to censor and regulate. Do you really want that?

No! But when a company engages in any business they are by law forbidden to
DISCRIMINATE. That includes not discriminating against political views. This is open discrimination. Why isn’t someone suing them or stopping them. Look how bakeries are legally tortured when their beliefs don’t allow them to celebrate a homosexual wedding. The Supreme Court really hasn’t ruled on freedom of religion… but that is the issue there.

This is an issue of the right to have a particular POLITICAL view. Till Obama, we all had the right to our political views. Now it’s guilt by association and you are shut down. A private hospital can not turn someone away of they disagree with their gang affiliation or the fact they are ILLEGAL. The swamp makes me ill. You can not have a DEMOCRACY with CENSORSHIP!

As wrong as their actions are, they do not fall under the purview of the FCC.

Not that anyone with half a brain uses Farsebook anyway, but what’s the big deal? If they want to slide down the slippery slope into the pool of non-existence on the bottom, they’ll end up yet another MySpace failure. Good riddance. Like, “Oh, here’s an idea! Let’s remove the utility function of our platform and see if it works.” Want better advice? Sell the stock short.

I never signed-up for facebook (‘course I just have a flip-phone anyhow. Wow, is the service cheap!).So Marc and them ain’t making $ off me. But it is too bad the 2016 warning about this wasn’t heeded. My fellow conservs. are unable to freely be political to their friends.Only left-wing stuff will show up there, as on Msm. Bodes not well for ’20.

I’ve come close to leaving Fascistbook altogether, but with so many people on there including friends and relatives, and the groups and pages that have come to mean so much… GAH!
PS – Gab and MeWe are really good social media sites, for anyone who might be interested.

AJ banned me for using the proper term of “Negro”. He found it OK to call them the ethnic slur of “bl*ck”. Is that why Fakebook is banning him? 😉

Notice there was no almost no outrage when Loomer and Watson were banned, and no mention at all from the mainstream print and broadcast media. We know how FB works. The powers there will see this and act. Next time it will be 10 times worse, as they are preparing for/to help the leftists win in 2020. And that is exactly what these bans are. They are tipping the playing field.

Why would you want Google to be the defendant of the biggest child porn and terrorism trial of the century, while pedophiles and terrorists get off the hook?

Why would you want every individual tweet and comment to have to be approved by a committee of lawyers before publication?

Sorry, but trying to get rid of Section 230 was the dumbest thing you could have done for Internet freedom and I’m glad you weren’t able to.

We already saw a preview of this happen with FOSTA/SESTA, an exception to Section 230 for sex trafficking which led Tumblr to ban explicit material, breaking up many gay and fetish communities on those sites. Facebook I believe did the same thing, as a reaction to FOSTA/SESTA.

Don’t encourage the Tech Masters of the Universe to ban politics which could make them liable for a far-right shooting! Maybe they’d ban all forms of criticism of Muhammad because they, not the terrorists, would be legally responsible for Islamic terror attacks!

Ted Cruz has a better idea, require companies be “neutral public forums” to be eligible for Section 230. Also, enact a digital equal time rule for candidates, perhaps also giving any candidate with ballot access (as opposed to a write-in) a get-out-of-jail-free card until the end of their campaign.

Facebook is just like “electricity”. Electricity became so popular, it was necessary to make it a public utility. Now, doesn’t that fit Facebook to a ‘T’.
