Christian Student Forced to Write Islamic Conversion Creed Appeals Case to Supreme Court

During the 2014-2015 school year, a Christian teenage girl was forced to recite the Islamic conversion creed — the Shahada — in writing for her 11th-grade class. She was also taught that “Most Muslims’ faith is stronger than the average Christian.” The Thomas More Law Center (TMLC) sued the school responsible, and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled with the school. TMLC appealed to the Supreme Court, filing a Writ of Certiorari on Monday.
Story continues below advertisement“Under the guise of teaching history or social studies, public schools across America are promoting the religion of Islam in ways that would never be tolerated for Christianity or any other religion,” TMLC President and Chief Counsel Richard Thompson said in a statement. “I’m not aware of any school which has forced a Muslim student to write the Lord’s Prayer or John 3:16: ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.'”
“Many public schools have become a hotbed of Islamic propaganda,” Thompson argued. “Teaching Islam in schools has gone far beyond a basic history lesson. Prompted by zealous Islamic activism and emboldened by confusing court decisions, schools are now bending over backwards to promote Islam while at the same time denigrate Christianity.”
“We are asking the Supreme Court to provide the necessary legal guidance to resolve the insidious discrimination against Christians in our public schools,” he concluded.
In Wood v. Arnold, the parents of Caleigh Wood, John and Melissa Wood, are suing Charles County Public Schools in Maryland, the county board of education, and Evelyn Arnold and Shannon Morris, principal and vice principal of La Plata High School.
TMLC noted five specific pro-Islam teachings that the 11th-grade teacher told Caleigh Wood from the Powerpoint presentation she gave in class (the underlining is original): “Most Muslims’ faith is stronger than the average Christian;” “Islam at heart is a peaceful religion;” Jihad is a “personal struggle in devotion to Islam, especially involving spiritual discipline;” “To Muslims, Allah is the same God that is worshiped in Christianity and Judaism;” “Men are the managers of the affairs of women” and “Righteous women are therefore obedient.” (To be fair, the Powerpoint did mention jihad as a “holy war” as well as a personal struggle.)
According to the TMLC filing, Wood was required to profess in writing the statement that “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” This statement is known as the Shahada, the Islamic conversion creed. A person recites this declaration in order to convert to Islam and then prays and repeats it during the Muslim call to prayer. Wood said she sincerely believes that it is a sin to profess, by word or in writing, that there is any god except the Christian God.
Yet the school required her to write the Shahada and docked her points when she did not.
Her father also testified that his daughter and her classmates “were instructed that the Islamic religion is a fact while Christianity and Judaism are just beliefs.” The teacher told students that the “Qur’an is the word of Allah as revealed to Muhammad in the same way that Jews and Christians believe the Torah and the Gospels were revealed to Moses and the New Testament writers,” and that Muhammad was visited by the Angel Gabriel who proclaimed that there is only one true god.
While some instruction in Islam is certainly defensible, many of these teachings crossed the line into advocacy for Islam. Some are also just false. For instance, Muslims believe God directly revealed the Qur’an word for word. This is emphatically not the case with the Jewish and Christian scriptures, which believers say were inspired by God but written by humans in history. In fact, Christians consider the Gospels historical, journalistic documents recounting events the writers personally witnessed.
Claims like Islam being “at heart” peaceful, that Muslims have stronger faith than Christians in general, and that women should be obedient to Sharia (Islamic law that often requires them to wear head and body coverings in public or to stay home unless accompanied by a male relative) are extremely debatable.
While many Muslims reject Islamism — the idea that Sharia should be enforced by law — this radical Islam has deep roots in history, tracing back to Mohammed, who founded the first Islamic state. American freedom is compatible with many Islamic sects, but many more militate against it.
Muslims often follow their religious law more strictly than Christians, largely because Christianity is not a religion of law. This does not necessarily make their faith stronger.
The Fourth Circuit Court argued that this biased teaching did not violate the Lemon test for establishment of religion because the teaching of Islam was driven in part by a secular purpose, had the primary effect that neither advanced nor inhibited religion, and did not excessively entangle Church and State. If the teaching had not been biased in a pro-Islam direction, this may be defensible. After all, Americans should learn about Islam — just as they should learn about Islam and Judaism.
Unfortunately for the Fourth Circuit, previous court rulings kicking Christian prayer and Bible reading out of public schools suggest this teaching of Islam is also unconstitutional. TMLC, which almost certainly disagrees with the excising of prayer and Bible reading, used these legal arguments against the teaching of Islam.
TMLC cited Abington School District v. Schempp (1963), in which the Supreme Court ruled that school-sponsored reading of the Bible was unconstitutional. “The pervasive religiosity and direct government involvement inhering in the prescription of prayer and Bible reading in public schools, during and as part of the curricular day, involving young impressionable children whose school attendance is statutorily compelled, and utilizing the prestige, power, and influence of school administration, staff, and authority, cannot realistically be termed simply accommodation, and must fall within the interdiction of the First Amendment,” TMLC quoted from Schempp.
This citation shows that the Supreme Court “has forwarded a stricter application of the Establishment Clause” where “impressionable youths are involved.”
At the time Schempp was decided, schools may have established Christianity to some degree. Yet since Schempp and similar rulings pushed the Bible out of public schools, Americans have lost out on the rich literary heritage and civic significance of the Bible. Religious literacy has reached dangerous lows, to the degree that journalists at America’s newspaper of record, The New York Times, lack a basic understanding of Christian doctrine.
Americans should have a basic understanding of what the major religions claim, especially Judaism, Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, and Buddhism. These faiths have impacted history in important ways, and students should have direct access to their history and texts in the classroom.
Although I am a Bible-believing Christian, I learned the Shahada and have no problem saying or writing it. If there were a fair standard where schools taught all the major religious conversion creeds (including John 3:16 along with the Shahada), I think there would be no problem with requiring students to know them. Perhaps students could still get marks for alternate versions, such as writing “g-d” for “god” so as to avoid sin.
Yet current law restricts teaching about religion, on the theory that young minds are too impressionable and that schools teaching the Bible would constitute an establishment of religion. Perhaps in early elementary school this may have some merit, but at least in high school, students should gain a basic understanding of these things.
In any case, if the Supreme Court precedent prevents Christian prayer and Bible reading in schools, it should also prohibit this kind of skewed Islamic teaching.

It’s very simple, every fascist totalitarian has known for ages that young minds are very malleable like clay. So you can brainwash children with any crazy ideology you like and they will come to accept it without question since they haven’t developed the ability to think critically and independently yet.
This is why religious fanatics, esp Muslims are so desperate to flood schools with pro-Islamic propaganda so that it’ll be easier for them to conquer us and Islamify our countries since there will be no resistance because western kids will have already been ‘converted’ or subdued.
All the more reason for parents to fight against this ideological poison/mind-virus from being taught in the schools in the first place. In fact they should be taught about the real Islam, based on the pedophile-warlord prophet and his band of merciless criminals who stole, raped, slaughtered innocents that refused to join his death cult.

In respect of Russian antisemitism (and also Ukrainian, Polish, Litvinian, Latvian, Estonian’s)- they receive it from their breastfeeding. In this case it has nothing to do with muzzies. They are antisemites from the birth to their death. All the pogroms and massacres on the territory of the former Russian Empire, including Poland, Litva, Latvinia, Moldova occurred without single muzrat involved. Russian muslims are mostly tatars, who lived their own life, mostly peacefully at the time when I lived in the former USSR. Crimea tatars collaborated with Nazi though, on the occupied territories. Stalin deported all of them to Siberia in 48 hours right after the end of WW2.

I’ve never heard about it. Possible some local conflict in Crimea, but it’s just my guess. As far as I know it was nothing remarkable. Casaks and local population mostly in the small villages were in charge for pogroms in czarist Russian Empire. Later, after the revolution- the gangs of Petlura, Machno, Denikin’s mob. But the worst was a local population, especially in Ukraine, Moldova, Poland(they were part of the Russian czarist empire till the October Revolution in 1918

Parents sued. Lower court ruled with the school and teacher. Appellate court ruled with the school and teacher. So, it’s OK to force a human being to put, in writing, a forced moslem conversion mantra …. but, just let a human being attempt to do the opposite to a moslem. What is eternally important is God knows her heart. She is no more a Muslim than I am. She is the definition of an impressionable youth. To require her to do that is psychological abuse and abuse of a teacher’s role as an authority figure. Islam should not be forced on anyone under any circumstances! She should sue the school district and require all those that push this fired and I don’t care if they have tenure or not. They have lost the TRUST given to them for the privilege of being a teacher. In a public school they don’t teach much about Judaism or Christianity. I hope she realizes that she is doing other students a favor by highlighting this outrageous requirement!
The excuse used to push Islam on students is people are already familiar with Judaism and Christianity while Islam is new and students need to see how wonderful it is and how much a Jew or a Christian has in common with it. This LIE helps sell Islam. They present Christianity and Judaism in a negative light for what little they cover of it and glorify Islam as superior. I know this as a fact from a neighbor . At first I couldn’t believe it was that bad – it is! I have seen the Obama Common Core book, lessons and homework. Parents are not paying attention to what is going on in the public school system or liberal slanted private schools. They are indoctrinating students and watering down serious subjects. They are churning out liberal emotional imbeciles. The public school system needs to be abolished. You can’t repair it.
My kids attended a conservative Bible based Christian school. Since they couldn’t retaliate against me or my kids through grades, I wound up going to school board meetings and speaking up for my neighbor about what they were being indoctrinated with. They had to listen to me, and I always reminded them MY TAXES were paying for this trash and every student deserves better. The board hated me but I could care less. Even if a teacher starts out with good intentions, to get tenure they have to go left or go from contract to contract and not get tenure. Money wins and they become just like the other propagandists. Tenure needs to be abolished too. No teacher should have a job for life. It’s almost impossible to get rid of them once they have tenure and part of the union.

So, as you state, if the “moderate” Muslim is OK with having a Christian arrested for standing on a public street, say in Dearborn, while holding a Bible where Muslims will see you then it doesn’t matter what they say about interfaith talks or tolerance or the inner struggle, they are probably your typical devout Muslim… who follows and believes in a politically seditious ideology that should be banned due to its seditious nature and abject incompatibility with western/Judeo-Christian values.

Here in Canada, Muslim men who went off to fight for ISIS were simply allowed to return. In our public school in Connecticut, we learned about religion only “tangentially” as it impacted MAJOR historical facts and events. We were not “required” to learn “about religion” per se, much at all. And we specifically were FORBIDDEN to be TAUGHT religion directly as “gospel” of any sort !!! That would have resulted in immediate firing of any instructor who dared to do it.
Also, we were very clearly taught that “Judeo-Christian” ethics and values, along with “Greco-Roman” values, were the “basis for our Western Civilization.” This is clearly true, yet it is this “basis” and foundation of Western Civilization which has been assaulted and was attempted to be destroyed by Left/prog activists and revolutionaries over the last 30 years in particular. We need to return to this foundation and not deviate from it again.
Clearly, islam is NOT the basis of Western Civilization in any way, although we did derive some of our mathematics from people who worked under islamic rule and before islam developed. If anything, islam is completely antithetical to Western Civilization and should be viewed as its most malevolent ENEMY.

This author is ignorant. Reciting the Shahada means you’ve declared yourself Muslum. A believer & follower of Allah (Satan) & his false prophet- Mohammed. Then when you practice Christianity you have become an apostate & should be killed in Islamic law.

As a born again Bible believing Christian I would not write or say the Shahada. I consider it a statement of faith in a false god, a violation of the 1st Commandment, and denial of Jesus Christ. Bible believing and Bible obeying are two different things. It is outrageous that students are being forced to speak this statement in our public schools, and a huge leap down the slippery slope of religious coercion.

I always wear my Viking Asatru Talisman and a musrat type asked me what it was and when I told him, he questioned the authenticity of my family’s religion. Then I told him that my religion was esoteric according to our heritage and any musllim had no reason to q;uestion it. He told me that his religion should be the one I worshiped, but I told him that his religion was crap and that if he tried to force me to convert that he would feel the total wrath of my ancestors immediately. His eyes showed fear and he walked off quickly. Maybe the Christians should do the same thing when confronted by one or more of these ragheads.

Those talking points from the Islamic segment is pure rubbish. It is not the religion of peace. Jihad’s primary purpose is not the inner struggle. Being legalistic does not equate to a stronger faith. And it’s one thing to make a statement that Muslims believe in saying the shahada. But to be told they must say or write it is like saying a bible verse. If they’re going to quote the Quran, they should quote from Ch 9.
