East Sri Lanka on edge after Easter bombers linked to region

By Jon Grambell, AP April 28. 2019:

KALMUNAI, Sri Lanka (AP) — Suicide bombings at a militants’ safe house have shaken the simple homes of this east Sri Lankan town as well as the rest of this idyllic coast, as the investigation into the Islamic State-claimed Easter bombings has spread here.

Police and military checkpoints dot the coastal roads, with people emptying out of buses to present their identity papers. On streets lined with shuttered shops, police officers with assault rifles look warily at passers-by. Whispers persist about the leader of the IS-pledged militant group, which preached the promise of heaven through the killing of others both here and online.

The scale of the explosives seized following Friday night’s violence, as well as the continued warning of authorities that more militants remain on the loose, only add to the dread.

“Even though the security forces are here, it’s not like earlier,” said Chandima Krishanthi, a 42-year-old market vendor in nearby Ampara. “We are living in fear. It’s nothing like it used to be.”

Sri Lanka’s eastern coast was a battleground in the island nation’s 26-year civil war with the Tamil Tiger rebels, a group of secular nationalists who launched over 130 suicide bombings themselves. The war ultimately ended in 2009 with the government crushing the Tigers, with some observers believing that tens of thousands of Tamils died in the last few months of fighting alone.

Violence here in Kalmunai, some 225 kilometers (140 miles) northeast of the capital, Colombo, shattered nearly 10 years of peace on Friday night. One neighbor, Ahamed Mohammed Rizwan, told The Associated Press that leaders at his mosque asked him and two others to go the militants’ house and check on them as he knew the people living there.

As they approached, one man opened the gate and said, “Peace be upon you,” Rizwan said. He replied the same way and they entered the compound and began talking. Suddenly, another man appeared with a Chinese variant of the Kalashnikov assault rifle and aimed it at Rizwan’s chest, saying, “God is the greatest.” [Allah Akbar]

Rizwan and the other men fled and found two traffic police officers, who then started walking toward the house. The militants opened fire, sparking the confrontation, Rizwan said. Those inside later detonated suicide vests, killing themselves and others.

AP journalists walking through the neighborhood Sunday found evidence of the firefight. Spent 7.62 mm cartridges littered the ground, likely from the assault rifle one of the militants carried. Down the street, bullet holes punctured the cement block walls of neighbors’ homes.

Around the house, the scale of the violence became even more clear. A limb still lay in a drainage ditch. The roof of the home had been blown off by the power of the explosion, pages of religious tracts in Arabic lying atop it.

Inside the home, lined notebooks had a child’s shaky Arabic calligraphy. Police also laid out white linen women’s dresses recovered from inside, similar to those worn by Buddhists when they go to temple. Investigators spoke softly to each other, wondering if that meant the militants planned to expand their targets beyond Christian churches.

Soldiers waited until sunrise Saturday before entering the home, ending the violence that killed 15 people. Amid the blood-stained walls and shattered glass, they found a young girl, as well as a woman. Police spokesman Ruwan Gunasekara later identified them as the wife and 4-year-old daughter of Mohammed Zahran, the alleged mastermind behind the Easter Sunday bombings of three churches and three hotels that killed over 250 people.

Meanwhile, in nearby Kattankudy, the mosque of National Towheed Jamaat, the organization that Zahran once led, found itself raided by police and military Sunday. Authorities searched and shut down the center just within eyesight of the waves of the Bay of Bengal.

The Islamic State group claimed Friday night’s suicide bombings, saying early Sunday morning that “with success from Allah the Almighty” the attackers blew themselves up.

But police discovered the bodies of six children inside of the home, all likely the victims of a powerful blast that tore away part of the home’s roof and sent out a deadly wave of small metal balls.

Sifting through debris Sunday afternoon, a police officer discovered the arm of what appeared to be an infant. He cupped it in his gloved hands, blackened from the soot.

“These people are animals,” he said. “How can they have children then blow up these children?”

The officer gently laid the child’s arm down next to a charred assault rifle magazine, a license plate and pieces of a cellphone. It was now evidence of even greater crimes.

When dealing with wars and mass murders … many religions, over time, have been guilty. However, when it comes to sheer numbers … VAST numbers of human beings brutally murdered, there are two … Two that have outdone all of the others, put together … 1) mohammedanism and 2) The Religion of Atheism. Both seem to have evangelists, a-plenty, trying to convert others to their murderous cults.

Your attempt to use a No True Scotsman defense to disassociate atheists from Communism is disgusting but not unexpected. The atheists who ran the USSR routinely persecuted non-atheists (as does atheist N. Korea now) and unilaterally closed down all churches and synagogues.

I apologize then. However Communism is no less a fantasy than any other religion — because throughout history the dictatorship of the proletariat has never withered away and left everyone living “from each according to his ability, to each according to his needs.”
You setup your own straw man worm, I never stated atheism equals Communism or that atheist leads to Communism.

I am curious as to your answer to the myriad of prophecies given in the Bible. There are over 1800 between the OT and NT, with literally a 100% fulfillment rate. Some are simple and could even be argued as nonspecific but there are also quite a few that are chocked full of details and time restraints often involving immense time spans, that have fulfilled to the letter with no ambiguity to them whatsoever.

The handful that are left, pertain to the times we are in now and all of them, given over 2000yrs ago, are all setting up to be fulfilled. How does “man” do that by himself, with no outside help. All of these “prophets” credited God as the source of all this. What say you

Again, for the umpteenth time, The Religion of Atheism is a religion. A religion, second only to mohammedanism, that has been the cause of more mass murders than all of the others, outside of mohammedanism, put together. The evangelists of The Religion of Atheism always spout the same tired lines … as they attempt to proselytize. I’ve even seen some attempt to use “primary” and “secondary” qualities .. as proof of The Religion of Atheism’s truths. When I have pointed out that “primary and secondary” qualities were originated by Descartes, in his “proof” of the existence of G-d. And, all of them couldn’t even grasp the “cogito ergo sum” or “cognizance therefore existence”.
The Religion of Atheism needs evangelists with greater intellects, and education levels than most of them have.

No force has been involved. Simply statements of fact. Good luck with your continued evangelism. When I meet Jehovah Witnesses, I am always kind and wish them the same. I do not treat those that follow the Religion of Atheism, especially that religion’s evangelists, any different that I do the Mormons and J.W.s. I always wish them well.

On what evidence do you conclude that atheists are, on average, more murderous than folks who adhere to some religion (other than Islam)?

If you are thinking of the Nazis, think again. Most of them were Christians who saw no conflict between their religion, and that political movement.

If you’re thinking of Marxists in any of their iterations, they are not really atheists, either, though they officially call themselves that, and reject organized religion as “the opium of the people.” They believe in Marx just as fervently as Muslims believe in Mohammed and Christians believe in Jesus. But maybe that’s what you meant.

Chairman Mao. Joseph Stalin. That’s close to eighty million … I can easily go on from there. And, it isn’t due to Marxism .. it’s simply due to them following The Religion of Atheism. The Religion of Atheism is the official religion of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. I know some people, very close to me, that smuggled bibles into the portion of China close to the border of Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. They have some very frightening stories to relate. To be found with a bible, or collection of Buddhist sutras, etc., carries a serious sentence there …. As, the official religion is The Religion of Atheism.

Congratulations worm, you just used the fallacy of argumentation known as the No True Scotsman to try and disassociate Marxists from atheism. No sale.

Michael Jacobs
Michael Jacobs

Sorry, no, you got it backwards. A “No True Scotsman” argument would go something like, “No true atheist would be a Marxist.” OR, “No true Marxist would be an atheist.” I did not make EITHER of those fallacious arguments.

What I said was that Marxists believe in Marx. Of course I’m aware that they CLAIM to be atheists and reject (and suppress and persecute) organized religion. My point was simply that their unquestioning acceptance of Marxist dogma is indistinguishable from a religion, from a scientific-study-of-religions-and-belief-systems point of view. I believe that is a necessary insight to understand their faith-based fanaticism, since Marxism certainly is not an evidence-based view of reality.

But, let’s assume we are defining atheism YOUR way. Then, what I wrote is still not a “No True Scotsman” argument. I AGREE that all “orthodox” Marxists are atheists, by your definition. But that does NOT mean “all atheists are Marxists.” That is the logical fallacy of “Affirming the Consequent” which generally takes the form:

“If A, then B. B, therefore A.”

Translated into our particular discussion, that would be:

“If one is a Marxist, then one is an atheist. Marxists are murderous, therefore, ALL atheists are murderous.”

And, what the comment by Achmed Mohandjob (that I was responding to) claimed, was that ATHEISTS are more murderous, on average, than people who profess belief in a deity.

That conclusion is not logically supported by the (undisputed) fact that Marxists killed millions.

If you subscribe to Marx’s insane theories how can you NOT be an atheist?
Um Communists slaughtered tens of millions of people in the 20th century and they WERE atheists:

“Our program necessarily includes the propaganda of atheism.” – Vladimir Lenin
In the USSR anyone NOT an atheist was discriminated against and oppressed, churches and synagogues were unilaterally closed by the atheist government.

Maybe your reading comprehension needs improvement.

I AGREED with you that all orthodox Marxists are atheists.

I also specifically noted that atheism is an official part of Marxist-Leninist dogma, And I also agreed that Marxist governments and movements are responsible for countless inhuman atrocities.

I disagreed with the original comment, however, where it seemed to blame ALL atheists, for the atrocities that Marxists have committed.

If you want to disparage Marxists, blame MARXISTS. Don’t blame or disparage all atheists.

And if you want to disparage jihadists and political Islamists, don’t blame ALL Muslims.

Either of those would be just as silly as blaming ALL white people alive today, for chattel slavery of African blacks in America. You wouldn’t do that, would you? Because it’s unfair and untrue.

Same idea. No double standard.

If you know history, many Buddhists in South and Central Asia did not want to fight back when the Arab Muslims first invaded their regions, because of their pacifist worldview and beliefs. Now Buddhism is all but extinct there, while Islam reigns supreme…

Just a couple of points worth mentioning, here, especially in light of Ms. Geller’s derisive disrespect for those who referred to the victims as “Easter worshippers” — which they were — and insisted this was a jihad specifically against Christians.

One – no, it’s not. It’s a jihad against ANYBODY who has not already submitted to the form of islam espoused by this particular band of jihadists — be they Christians, Buddhists, Hindus, Jews, secularists — or other, dissenting Muslims who adhere to a different brand of Islam. They simply chose a target (churches, on Easter) where they knew large groups of nonbelievers in THEIR dogma would be gathered for a joyous or iconic ooccasion, as jihadists are wont to do — whether their target be Christian worshippers on their holiest day of Easter, a large Jewish Passover gathering , an Ariana Grande concert attended by thousands of British children, or Orlando gays celebrating at a nightclub.

Two – NOT ALL MUSLIMS are jihadists OR willing to support or tolerate jihadists in their midst. In fact, as this article reports, it was local MUSLIMS who became suspicious of this jihadist cell, when they moved into the neighborhood after the Easter massacres, and reported them to the authorities. They are the ALLIES of all good, civilized, tolerant, people of every religion, or of no religion, worldwide, who oppose this scourge, and their participation and cooperation are vital to the success of that effort.

So, anybody who says, as some commentators on this site basically do, that “the only good Muslim is a dead Muslim” are JUST AS BAD as the jihadists, just from the opposite direction.

There’s a difference between wanting to embrace some opinion or lifestyle option or belief PERSONALLY, and upholding the FREEDOM of OTHERS to “do their thing” so long as they do not infringe on the rights of others. I’m sorry you can’t see the difference.

Wherever Death Cultists go misery follows; it’s as predictable as sunrise. If you don’t bring them into your country you don’t have to figure out which are OK and which are psycho-killers. Do you see the logic here?
