Story continues below advertisement

The wife of an Al Qaeda chief had her human rights breached by UK airport police, European judges have ruled.

Sylvie Beghal, 49, was stopped at East Midlands Airport while returning to Leicester after a visit to her husband Djamel Beghal in a French jail.

The mother of three said she was detained without reasonable suspicion – violating her right to private and family life.

Sylvie Beghal (left), 49, was stopped for questioning after flying to France to visit Djamel Beghal (right), who was behind bars for plotting to blow up the American embassy in Paris

Her claims were rejected by the High Court and Supreme Court but the European Court of Human Rights eventually ruled in her favour.

The Home Office said it was disappointed by the ruling, which it has three months to challenge.

The airport incident in 2011 had led to Mrs Beghal being charged with failing to help officers – an offence under Schedule 7 of the Terrorism Act 2000.

Lord Carlile of Berriew, who was the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation from 2001 to 2011, said: ‘Schedule 7 is absolutely key to the protection of the public in the UK and to national security’It has to be used carefully and proportionately, as recognised when the law was amended in 2014. But I’m very surprised that this case has resulted in such a ruling, particularly given the factual background.

‘I fear we have to put this down to a questionable decision by the ECHR. In my view the British courts were right and correctly took their decisions in this case.’

Tory MP Andrew Bridgen, whose constituency covers the airport, said: ‘It’s sickening. These people are big on human rights but not so much on their responsibilities.

‘We all have a duty to cooperate with the police with regards to terrorism and anyone who doesn’t want to is breaking the bond of loyalty to our country

The mother-of-three claimed she was stopped at East Midlands Airport (pictured) ‘without reasonable suspicion’ and that her right to respect for private and family life was violated

‘It’s great she can use the law to protect her own right to family life, but she has strong links with a convicted terrorist and Al Qaeda have not shown any regard to human rights in the past with their victims.’

According to court documents lodged at the ECHR, Mrs Beghal was stopped at the airport after visiting her husband with their children.

Officers said they wanted to talk to her to establish whether she might be ‘a person concerned in the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism’.

She refused to answer questions until a lawyer was present and after 30 minutes was told she was free to go. But she was later charged under Schedule 7 and pleaded guilty at Leicester Magistrates’ Court in December 2011.

Beghal is said to have radicalised other terrorists while in jail, including Charlie Hebdo killer Cherif Kouachi (pictured)

She then launched a legal action, claiming the powers given to police under Schedule 7 did not have adequate safeguards to be ‘in accordance with’ the European Convention on Human Rights.

Her case reached the ECHR in January 2016, which last week ruled in her favour. Judges told the Government to foot her £21,531 legal bill.

He is said to have radicalised other terrorists while in jail, including Charlie Hebdo killer Cherif Kouachi, one of two brothers who murdered 12 during the gun attack on the magazine’s Paris offices in January 2015.

He is also said to have mentored Amedy Coulibaly, who shot a policewoman and four shoppers dead at a kosher supermarket two days after the Hebdo attack.

Algerian-born Beghal settled in France in 1987 and married in 1990. He became a French citizen which allowed the couple to move to Leicester seven years later.

He regularly travelled to London and was allegedly radicalised at the Finsbury Park Mosque under the influence of Abu Hamza and Abu Qatada. He is also said to have flown to Afghanistan to receive orders from Osama Bin Laden.

Beghal was banned from the UK in 2009 after being jailed by the French for a plot to blow up the US embassy in Paris.

His wife is believed to have cost taxpayers more than a quarter of a million pounds in handouts since moving to the UK.

A Home Office spokesman said: ‘We will now consider the implications of this judgment carefully.’

I missed it, feck, my brain was in La-La Land; I saw the replays. I was still ecstatic though was pi**ed at my brain. Ole is brilliant, I can not foresee why they would want to higher an outsider after his successes off and on the pitch; he has restored the team play and spirit in all ways, something we hadn’t seen since Sir Alex retired. I recall the matches when Arsenal was a competitive threat. The fights in the tunnel on the pitch – not that Arsenal is not a threat, they, too, are playing well. Thanks for the heads-up, I’ll chisel it into my forehead before Sunday. Indeed, roll on the 29th, Dave. Take care.

I wish that I could agree with your enthusiasm about Brexit taking place on the 29th. May is doing everything she can along with her band of traitors to either stay glued to the EU or at the very least delay Brexit. No deal is the only solution to this dragged out debacle that should have taken place at least a year ago. May is no different to the no backbone Cameron who kept rushing over to Brussels to try and gain some concessions to benefit the UK, only to come back looking more stupid and inept than when he left. May is the same, but loves the EU and as far as the EU is concerned, she is one of them.

I think they may delay the date of departure and try and water it down but they can’t stop it.
We are all out on the streets around Whitehall on the 29 March and whether it’s ???? party or pain???? The government decides.

Yeah, I’ve heard of Brexit, and I endorse it. But my remark alluded more to the Brits’ cow-towing to Islam, where they let their young girls get raped by Muslims rather than be thought of as ‘Islamophobic’. How they arrest their citizens for Facebook comments regarding Muslims. How they always just clean up the mess caused by terrorists, and then warn people not to think, say, or do anything ‘Islamophic’, and if any Muslims feel they’ve been victims of ‘Islamophbia’, to call the police. Well, what about the people’s fears of Islam?

The Islamic problem started in earnest some thirty years ago. This is when the British people should have come out and vented their anger, but unfortunately most did not. The EDL was one of the first anti-Muslim organizations that took to the streets in protest at the ever increasing invasion and look how so many British people marched against them, criticized them as thugs and called them fascists Most people ignored them when they should have been supporting their cause, even if they did not join them.

Lord Achmed for Prime Minister!
Good fighting talk Lord Ach and very true. It has been pointed out that car factories in Germany would close down such is the size of the British market. And french wine gets guzzled by the crate load by the Booz loving Brits.
But we have made some terrible mistakes by selling off prize British assets to the continentals such as the Mini which the current owners BMW are threatening to relocate elsewhere and close the Mini manufacturing plant down if there is a No deal Brexit. This case of blackmail is by no means on its own as several multi national companies that are firm globalists have also threatened to do the same.
We still have a desperate battle on our hands as the government is put under more pressure with these threats

Just an update on the murder of the 17 year old girl in London.
There’s a march tonight to the local police station to protest about their lack of policing of these areas where feral gangs run free and unchallenged. Theres also been some impromptu patrols by my friends who live nearby that area but more of that is due to be organised after tonight’s march.
The murderer has been arrested in Leicester and is remanded in jail but the police are releasing no further details about him yet.
Will re-update you on this after tonight’s protest. Which I won’t be attending as it’s too far from me but I’m being kept up to date.

It will be a full turnout by the boys and all my pals are meeting up in a pub near Westminster and we will make it a night to remember. And I know of plenty of other groups of hardline patriots who will be in that vicinity at the same time so a very lively night is on the cards.

I don’t think it is part of the EU. The European Court of Human Rights is a supranational or international court established by the European Convention on Human Rights in 1959. It preceded the EU. But it is not a British Court. So why would they have allowed some continental court to have authority over their courts? I don’t know if Brexit would affect their ability to get away from this court.

It is unconscionable that the sovereignty of the UK be compromised by a group of moronic left wing politicians masquerading as a Court of Justice in the EU. These judges are the slime of European politics and incapable of protecting the rights of Europeans, but entirely capable of aiding and abetting the Muslim invaders. After Brexit the Brits can proceed to implementing Muslix, the deportation of these hideous, barbaric vermin from the shores of Britain. She plead ‘guilty’, so that should have been the end to it right there–Ten years ago I plead ‘guilty’ after my lawyer stabbed me in the back & even after paying two more lawyers the state refused to consider allowing me to change my plea, even though I immediately changed my plea to innocent

It is called USING OUR LAWS AGAINST US! That;’s what is wrong with things. There are LAWS on the books and if we used them and stuck by our LAWS it would be good. We have people in government and the schools WHO DO NOT GO BY THE RULES AND CHEAT SO they can help losing our freedoms to the criminals of nazi-islam. These people deny that islam is criminal and they refuse to get tough. Will there be a civil war because those who are tough will finally fight? I think so. There will be lots of blood . The early patriots used guerrilla warfare and this will be what will be used against the NAZI-ISLAM INVADERS .

So having a private conversation with a terrorist by law may NOT be considered as “reasonable suspicion”? The legal definition of “reasonable suspicion” is very vague, not even the police have a clue of what it really means; Roger Stone got raided and arrested by the FBI mainly because he had a private conversation with a spy.
