Why is this only in a letter to the editor? It should be front-page news in every newspaper in the country.
When we went to Columbia University for our video series, we asked students if Planned Parenthood should fund female genital mutilation. The overwhelming response was yes. That should frighten every rational human in America.
Any society that tolerates the deliberate mutilation of women and girls can no longer call itself part of the civilized world.

Where are the feminists? What a phony movement.
Dissemblers and deceivers claim that FGM is cultural phenomenon, not religious. FGM is an Islamic cultural phenomenon. FGM is found only within and adjacent to Muslim communities. (source: Gerry Mackie, “Ending Footbinding and Infibulation: A Convention Account,” American Sociological Review).
Unlike male circumcision, female genital mutilation has no health benefits for girls and women.
Female genital mutilation (FGM) involves partial or total removal of the clitoris, causing injury to the female genital organs for non-medical reasons.
Female genital mutilation removes all possibility of sexual pleasure. It is the worst kind of misogyny.
Procedures can cause severe bleeding and problems urinating, and later cysts, infections, as well as complications in childbirth and increased risk of newborn deaths.
More than 200 million girls and women alive today have been cut in 30 countries in Africa, the Middle East and Asia, where FGM is concentrated.
FGM is mostly carried out on young girls between infancy and age 15.
FGM is a violation of the human rights of girls and women.

An important bill died in the legislature this year, “An Act Prohibiting Female Genital Mutilation.” Senate Bill 190 would have made it a Class D felony, punishable by up to five years in prison, to perform female genital mutilation on a person under 18.
FGM is outlawed federally, and 26 other states in the United States also ban it. Connecticut needs to join them to put this terrible practice on the radar of schools, clinics, courts and police. Connecticut lawmakers need a zero-tolerance law banning FGM to protect young women and girls.
FGM is a barbaric procedure, affecting up to 140 million women and girls worldwide. Alarmingly, the Population Reference Bureau indicates that 2,658 women and girls are at risk in Connecticut.
FGM is a human rights violation and a terrible crime against girls and women. The time is now to prevent FGM and stand with victims.

the fact that there has to be a bill prohibiting fgm in the first place shows that we are closer to sharia in USA then one could ever have imagined. No md in the world should be allowed to perform fgm because it violates the hippocratic oath , ie do no harm. If leaders of women’s rights groups and women in democratic leadership positions advocate fgm then they should have these procedures performed on themselves, preferably by a muzlim or muzlima of their choice. I just hope that the muzlim fgm performer uses a clean knife that was taken from the dishwasher , and that the blade is not too dull. Ouch my penis hurts just thinking about it.

“A few cells clumping together” is an unusual way to describe a human being.
FACT: In the textbook “The Developing Human: Clinically Oriented Embryology” by professors Keith Moore, T.V.N. Persaud, and Mark Torchia state “when the unborn child is a one-cell zygote, it already is a unique, living human being.” At conception the child’s gender, hair and eye color are set, its DNA is unique to him/her.
The authors of this textbook explain “human development” is “a continuous process that begins when an oocyte from a female is fertilized by a sperm from a male,” and “human development begins at fertilization when a sperm fuses with an oocyte to form a single cell, the zygote.” Simply: human life begins at conception. 64 medical textbooks contain like information; the constant is at fertilization a ‘new, distinct human life is present.
The purpose of an abortion is to end the life of the in utero child. Why would anyone support abortion knowing a child will die?
Help me understand why people advocate for the end of life act abortion but do whatever possible to stay alive even when they declare the planet is an awful place.

That anyone does not understand sexual child abuse, assault, physical mutilation, and psychological impacts of a mother betraying, a religion demanding, the most horrific assault ever imagined on an innocent and trusting dependent child… there are no words to describe the sort of horror the whole FGM idea, much less, the act, engenders on a normal, civilized woman who enjoys her own set of wonderful, intact genitalia.

Not if it results in grievous bodily harm. I think the mere drawing of blood without a reason (splinters don’t count) on someone unable to give consent is felonious. It’s assault. And for FGM and MGM, it is child sexual assault and mutilation, which should get everyone involved the death penalty, as far as I’m concerned. Any more stupid questions?

You are the loser. Religious freedom does not include the right to assault, maim, and mutilate. Everyone, regardless of belief, has to obey the law. And the law covers mutilation, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual abuse. FGM and MGM are both, by definition, illegal. Not just sick, depraved, amoral, psychotic, and mental abusive use of parental power.

MUGUMU, TANZANIA—The girls erupt from the roadside bushes, their brilliant shawls swirling behind them as they beeline for the idling car.
They clamber into the back, wide-eyed and breathing hard.
School is out, and girls like Dorika are fleeing their families to save their childhoods and, maybe, save their lives.
The cutting season has begun, and safe house staff are busy.
The December rains mark not only the end of the school term but the start of the four-week period when girls in Tanzania’s northern Mara region typically are forced to endure female genital mutilation (FGM), also known as female circumcision or, simply, cutting. Men in the Kurya and Mungurimi tribes are brought up to believe that msagani — uncut girls — are unclean and unfit for marriage.
“My mother threatened to bind my arms and legs and have me cut by force if I refused,” says Dorika, speaking through a translator.
She is 12 years old.

This so called surgery is one of the most dangerous, idiotic, disgusting thing that is inflicted on young girls and women. It leaves horrific scar tissue, causes severe trauma during child birth, and bad infections. Numerous girls and women die as a result of this barbaric butchery. Lets hope that the medical profession can exert enough pressure on its members to not perform these procedures. The profession has been effective in their objections to doctors performing lethal injections. As I recall there was a case in one of the Southern states where no doctor in the entire state could be found to perform the lethal injection. Below is the current AMA statement:

Our AMA: (1) condemns the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM); (2) considers FGM a form of child abuse; (3) supports legislation to eliminate the performance of female genital mutilation in the United States and to protect young girls and women at risk of undergoing the procedure; (4) supports that physicians who are requested to perform genital mutilation on a patient provide culturally sensitive counseling to educate the patient and her family members about the negative health consequences of the procedure, and discourage them from having the procedure performed. I am an MD who just retired last year. During my 35 years of practice I never joined the AMA and interestingly in all that time I only met two doctors who are members. Nationwide only 15% of doctors belong to the AMA and I suspect it is less than that but they try to fool people by counting anyone who has a subscription to JAMA as a member. For 35 years I have received bills to pay my “membership dues”which of course I have never paid. But I am sure that they count me as a member. I don’t know how many other docs have experienced this but I suspect it is a lot. Just got my last bill 2 days ago and placed it in the circular file along with all the others.
Anyway I am not so sure that they are far left as it is that they love money and will do whatever it takes to make more and somehow the left seems to be where the money is these days. But be that as it may I would like to believe that most of us are ethical and their ethic stances have (I believe) been in line with that of most docs. They have come out strong against physician participation in executions by lethal injection, which by law requires a doctor to administer. And so I am expressing my hope that they will come out strong about FGM.
