The Queen on an open thread

We lost one of the greats this week. No one comes near her, no one.

Aretha Franklin, Indomitable ‘Queen of Soul,’ Dies at 76

Aretha Franklin, universally acclaimed as the “Queen of Soul” and one of America’s greatest singers in any style, died on Thursday at her home in Detroit. She was 76.

The cause was advanced pancreatic cancer, her publicist, Gwendolyn Quinn, said.

In her indelible late-1960s hits, Ms. Franklin brought the righteous fervor of gospel music to secular songs that were about much more than romance. Hits like “Do Right Woman — Do Right Man,” “Think,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman” and “Chain of Fools” defined a modern female archetype: sensual and strong, long-suffering but ultimately indomitable, loving but not to be taken for granted.

When Ms. Franklin sang “Respect,” the Otis Redding song that became her signature, it was never just about how a woman wanted to be greeted by a spouse coming home from work. It was a demand for equality and freedom and a harbinger of feminism, carried by a voice that would accept nothing less.

One of the ways I cheer myself up when I’m down is to watch The Queen totally own “The Blues Brothers” with “Think!” — in a pink waitress uniform and slippers!

And this is one of my faves, too.

I’m trying to remember when I first heard one of her great singles (and I can’t even remember which one now, rats!!), but I remember being totally brought to attention and thinking, “Wow!” And every time I saw & heard her on TV or the radio, I had that same visceral feeling. She was just one-of-a-kind, unique and more than able to hold her own (indeed, excel!!) in any musical genre (although I never heard her sing a popular opera area and would love to have done so!). She also had enormous appeal across the board vis-a-vis- age, gender, race, background and musical taste. As I posted elsewhere, I know that the angels in Heaven will be THRILLED to have “the Queen” living & singing among them!! The Heavens will, indeed, ROCK!!

Important fact: The original Rocky Motion Picture album doesn’t include The Eye of the Tiger. Just so you know, as they say, “it’s the cream of the fight.” You still MUST rise up to the challenge of your rival!
