Story continues below advertisementA mother has told of her terrifying ordeal of being locked up in a filthy Dubai jail for three days with her four-year-old daughter for drinking a glass of wine on a flight from London.Ellie Holman, 44, was arrested after being asked by an immigration official at Dubai International Airport if she had consumed alcohol on the eight-hour flight.
The mother-of-three, a dentist, from Sevenoaks, Kent, says she was held in a ‘baking hot and foul smelling’ airport detention centre – and not allowed to call her husband, Gary.
Now Dr Holman faces spending up to a year in the strict Arab state for her case to be settled.
Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, she said: ‘My little girl had to go to the toilet on the cell floor. I have never heard her cry in the same way as she did in that cell.

My passport remains confiscated until the case is settled, which I have been told will take at least a year,’ she said.
‘So far this situation has cost me around £30,000 in legal fees, expenses and missed work. My practice is closed. All our savings have gone.’
Her nightmare began after she stepped off an Emirates Airlines flight from London to Dubai on July 13th. During the flight she was served a glass of red wine with her meal. Alcohol is served as standard practice on Emirates Airlines on flights from the UK to Dubai.
On arrival Dr Holman was quizzed by an immigration official over her visa who told her it was not valid.
She said she had visited the UAE several times before and as the visa had not expired assumed it was still valid.
The immigration officer told her the visa was valid for a single visit and said she had to buy a ticket and return to London immediately.
Dr Holman says she pleaded with the ‘dismissive and rude’ official to allow her to apply for a new visa at the airport telling him her daughter was exhausted.

‘The thought of buying another ticket and turning straight around for another long flight was unthinkable,’ she said.
During a tense standoff with the immigration officer, Dr Holman said he became angry with her and refused to answer her questions. She said he then asked her if she had been drinking.
‘I told him I had a glass of wine on the flight. It was given to me free by Emirates Airlines staff.’
The official told Dr Holman possession of alcohol – even if consumed – was a crime in the UAE.
As the official became more agitated, Dr Holman started filming him on her mobile phone so that she had some evidence of his rude behaviour.
Within seconds she was surrounded by a dozen armed police and told filming airport officials was a criminal offence.
The terrified pair were led to a cell in the airport and had their phones and passports taken away.
Dr Holman said her daughter Bibi was inconsolable and she tried to comfort her by reading her books in the jail.
They were taken to a police station where she was told to provide a blood sample for an alcohol test, she said a guard took out her earrings and tried to rip off her hair extensions.
As police detention staff spoke in Arabic, Dr Holman pleaded for some water and food. She claims they also asked to use a toilet but were denied permission.
Dr Holman, a Swedish national, says she and Bibi were ordered to sleep in a canteen area used by other inmates.

She claims the room’s lights were kept on and with no air conditioning she said it was ‘baking hot and foul smelling.’
She said the male guards offered no help as, exhausted and shocked by her experience, she struggled to lift the mattress. The guards stood by and laughed, she claimed.
‘My daughter is a happy, smiley girl, but she was terrified,’ she said.
The terrified pair arrived at a police building where she says a man in a dirty white lab coat said he was going to take a sample of her blood as evidence she had drunk alcohol.
She was told the results showed 0.04% of alcohol in her blood – a reading far below the UK drink drive limit.
During their detention the pair did not eat.
‘The food smelled like rotting garbage and neither Bibi or I could face trying it. I stayed awake for the whole three days,’ she said.
She claims they were also denied a pillow or a change of clothing and Dr Holman was forced to clean toilets and mop the floor while her daughter stood by her side.
She said Bibi was in a state of shock and refused to be comforted.
Back at their home in Kent, partner Gary was frantic with worry, as he had not heard from the pair.
Dr Holman said: ‘Friends had found out I was in jail and tried to visit. Nobody was allowed to see us. We were not told.’
Gary flew to Dubai leaving the couple’s other children Suri, nine, and Noah, aged eight, with relatives.
Following her detention Dr Holman was taken in handcuffs back to airport and given bail.
Bibi and her father have now been allowed to fly back to the UK while Dr Holman is staying with friends in Dubai.
Gary said the experience of seeing his partner and daughter jailed was ‘devastating for the whole family.’
‘The thought of Ellie and our little girl in that awful prison breaks my heart.
‘Ellie is a sensible, professional person and excellent mother who would never knowingly break the law.
‘Why do Emirates Airlines serve alcohol for a passenger to drink and then pass through the airport.
‘This has been devastating for the whole family. Ellie was taking a much needed break with little Bibi, who was looking forward to the beach and playing in the sea.
‘I hope this can all be over so we can all be together again and start to heal.’
Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained In Dubai, the British human rights NGO representing Ellie said in a statement: ‘The UAE maintains a deliberately misleading façade that alcohol consumption is perfectly legal for visitors.
‘This is exampled by bars at the airport, by hotels, restaurants and clubs serving drinks. Tourists cannot be blamed for believing that the Emirates are tolerant of Western drinking habits but this is far from reality.
‘It is wholly illegal for any tourist to have any level of alcohol in their blood. It is illegal to consume alcohol at a bar, a hotel and a restaurant and if breathalysed, that person will be jailed.
David Haigh, a partner at Detained in Dubai added: ‘It’s heartbreaking to see a mother and child arrested over something so trivial as a glass of wine.’

This woman was accustomed to having rights like she does in any Western countries and assumed the Arabs would treat her with the same dignity and respect. Obviously like most westerners she did absolutely no research on this lunatic Islamic country (they’re all crazy) and that’s why she got herself into this mess.
The officer at the airport even gave her a chance to escape by saying she needs to get a flight back to London but after she became obnoxious and bossy, that’s when she got herself into deep trouble. Muslims are scum, don’t go to their countries, don’t let them into ours and we’ll be ok.
But I think at the end of the day this will only end when the West eradicates Islam, then people will be treated with equality wherever they go. So long as Islam exists, these sad stories will keep happening.

Agreed with your first paragraph. Unfortunately too many Europeans are dazzled by the luxuries such places have to offer them as compared with their homelands, not understanding said luxuries are bought on the back of literal slaves in most cases. The only see the sun, sand and shopping and glitzy luxury veneer of the place until it’s too late.

In Soddy Barbaria a muslum woman went to a Starbucks w/a colleague from work to discuss business. I visited Ukraine earlier this year. My choice of flights from the U.S. were either on Turkish Airways with a stop in Istanbul, or Lot Polish Airlines with a stop in Warsaw. Although it was several hundred dollars cheaper to fly through Istanbul, I chose Warsaw instead. When one of my Ukrainian friends asked me why, I said I had no desire to go to a country where the dictator just jailed 50,000 people he didn’t like. What if he decided he didn’t like me? She quickly saw my point.

It’s a beautiful country! Big cities there are clean – no litter anywhere, even in alleys. And they are safe to walk around, even at night. The people are also very friendly. I may have to join you there!

She is a foolish woman! You are exactly right. She escalated this and being a FEMALE made it so much worse. Filming the rudeness inflamed them more! There is no equality between the sexes. Males dominate to the extreme!

My guess is that she was doing something dodgy, and that’s why she was trying to recycle a single entry visa. Perhaps she was working illegally as a locum or something. Maybe she has an Arab boyfriend she’s cheating on her husband with. Maybe both!

Eh, not really about the drink then. More about trying to upstage a Dubai officia and filming him. Do NOT try that in Arab countries, It’s not the UK. Its not Sweden. Any loss of face and it’s bad news for you one way or the other. Foreigners always lose. Understand that. Doesn’t matter how ‘respectable’ you think you are, and a child is not a get-out-of-jail-free card. People need to stop thinking of Dubai as a London shopping centre with Arab decorations. It’s an Arab, sharia state with NO real freedoms as you understand the concept coming from Europe. You are tolerated, not welcomed and the law is assuredly not on your side in ANY fracas with a UAE citizen, let alone an official. Stupid woman. I am out of patience with Europeans who insist on believing it’s a fine place to vacation and then acting shocked when they get into serious trouble for minor infractions. That’s how it goes there. It CAN happen to you. She should have bought the ticket home as instructed or made sure her visa was in order to begin with. Screaming at ANY immigration official anywhere in the world won’t convince them to let you in, no matter how ‘tired’ you are. Documents are out of order, that’s it. The woman sounds like someone used to getting her way in the UK and forgetting she’s nothing in the great scheme of things outside her own bubble.

If you try to enter a country using an expired visa and the immigration official denies you entry, it’s rough, but it’s you that made the mistake, not them. Actually, I suspect it’s not even a mistake, but she’s doing something dodgy, since this is her 4th time to travel there on the same single entry visa, only this time she’s been caught out. My guess is that she’s working there illegally as a locum or something. There’s a lot of other things about her story that don’t add up, for instance why travel with no husband and just one daughter?
In any case, even if it’s a mistake, you don’t start mouthing off at the immigration officers and trying to film in a high security area where photography is prohibited. Well you can try, as this woman did, but it’s going to land you in jail, as she found out the hard way. Having been there several times, she should also have known that, while they do allow Westerners to consume alcohol there as long as it’s only done in private bars or homes, being drunk in a public place is a big no no and will land you in jail. So she’s entirely the architect of her own misfortune.
Furthermore, she had her young daughter with her, who she needlessly placed in a highly dangerous situation. What an incredibly irresponsible thing to do. So no, I don’t have any sympathy for her, she’s a spoiled brat who’s getting her comeuppance. Hopefully she’ll come out of the experience a better person.

Why would the Emirate airline serve alcohol if they knew it was illegal. Seems that airline should be held accountable for a policy that is designed to entrap innocent people. She should sue that airline for massive damages.

Serving free alcohol to unsuspecting foreigners is part of the scam, and they don’t know to not admit having drank the alcohol to the immigration guy. Most likely, the stewardess noted every passenger who accepted the free alcohol and passed that list on to immigration upon landing.

While it’s possible to have sympathy with the child and her mother over this issue of their detainment, the whole thing should focus the minds of those other travelers going through Dubai whose knowledge of the Islamic Arab “culture” there falls short of what they need to know.
Firstly, the woman argued with an Arab male “official”, she forgot {if she ever considered it} how inferior as a kuffar female she was out there, secondly because the Arab male she was engaging with was what he was, she was never going to be arguing with a balanced sane individual, just some inbred over promoted worthless little wog in a uniform.
The advice group Detained in Dubai have it right, but their advice is not sought in Britain before departure and I like most others have never heard of them before this incident.
The very sight of sophisticated, educated self achieving western people flying in on their high tech achievements to Islamic destinations antagonise every Arab who observes it, so they resent what we as westerners are, they know they cannot compete with us on any scale of worth, this both hurts their pride and humiliates them, so they resort to being more “religious” than us, thus “virtue signalling” to their bosses and others that they are still “Islamic” and a true believer.
To be honest, the sooner the airheads in the west with money to travel this way read of this woman’s plight.the sooner they’ll think of giving the place a “miss”.
Western celebrity culture doesn’t work or protect over there when you as an “ordinary” don’t have it..

Suri is a nickname for the Hebrew name Sarah. The other names are self explanatory.

This woman paid the price for her own ignorance, and a lack of situational awareness. The question on alcohol was an obvious trap and she fell right into it. She should have recognised a problem situation developing, capitulated straight away and taken that immediate return flight.
As an infidel, and a Jew, in Muslim hands, she was powerless (she should have known that) and should have gotten outa there quick smart.

I have never understood why anyone would trust a Muslim or visit their countries. Women, far more than men, are in extreme danger especially when on their own. I am aware that the PC media and government are scared of what Muslims will do, such as rioting, that they allow Muslims to control the country in which they live. One only has to look at the UK where there are no-go areas and paedophile rings which the authorities fail to arrest or prosecute. With new bigger aircraft, best if one can avoid going through Dubai, and not use any Muslim aircraft, and stay out of Muslim countries.
I do not like aircraft companies with partnership with Emirates, where one can be flying Emirates, eg with Quantas. Always best to check flight and ensure no transfer of aircraft enroute.
Hope the female doctor gets out safely without been raped or worse.

Reading the story in the Mail, she was trying to reuse a single entry visa that she’d used previously, and was no longer valid. They quite rightly refused her entry, since she didn’t have a valid visa. Then she started mouthing off at immigration officials and trying to film them with her mobile. In most jurisdictions, t’s illegal to film or take photos in high security areas of an airport, Dubai is hardly unique in that regard. Small wonder that they decided to throw the book at her.
Probably she was drunk and smelled of alcohol, so there you go, an easy way to send her to prison and give her 500 lashes. Apparently she’s from Sweden, and no doubt supports “refugees”. I hope she enjoys the diversity in the accommodation the UAE government have so kindly provided her with. I don’t have any sympathy for her at all, it’s her daughter I feel sorry for.

So, the mother put herself and her daughter at risk traveling to a place in the world like that without being 100% sure she had her paperwork in-order. Correct? Furthermore, in spite of the way society in Britain – AKA England – is being Islamified this doctor still chose to pour money into a place such as the UAE? She did so in a manner so reckless as to risk her own daughter – and her hubby who had to come rescue their shared daughter? While I’m saddened the daughter endured this experience, I can’t help but to point-out that her maternal caregiver neglected to care for and protect her by addressing common-sense concerns.

Actually, they didn’t immediately arrest and detain her, they just refused her entry, and told she’d have to purchase a return ticket and fly back to the UK. It’s tough, but it’s their country and their rules, and she’d been illegally reusing a single entry visa (this was her 4th time apparently).
The whole situation has come about because, rather than take the opportunity for her and her daughter to escape, she started mouthing off at the immigration officials, and trying to film them in an area where photography is prohibited. Try that stunt in any airport and you’re likely to find yourself in jail. Furthermore, while the UAE do tolerate Westerners drinking alcohol as long as it’s done in private, it’s an Islamic country, and being drunk in a public place is a big no no. Probably her behaviour and smelling of alcohol led them to conclude that she was drunk, which is how the alcohol charges have come into it.
So she’s entirely the architect of her own misfortune, and I don’t have a lot of sympathy!

I remember Beirut when they had a whole street of jewelers who would create flawless precious stone knock-offs of Cartier, Harry Winston etc. designs within DAYS ot the premier of the pieces themselves in New York or Paris. Exact quality stones, gold etc. but a small fraction of the cost. Also, Hermes bags that only differed from the real thing because they were better made! That was in 1975 before the Civil War but I doubt if the wonders of the criminal delights of Arab Civilization have changed much. Crime, fraud etc. is ONE thing they do better.
