Pope Francis Calls for ‘Decisive’ Action to End Migrant Deaths in Mediterranean

72

Pope Francis may live behind high Vatican walls, and conduct his Catholic Church business behind the protection of well-armed, well-trained security forces — but when it comes to telling others to take care of migrants and refugees, he speaks with a megaphone.

Talk about hypocrisy.

The pope in recent remarks issued a call for those around the globe to take care of migrants who’ve been risking their lives during crossings of the Mediterranean.

Story continues below advertisement
Vatican City, enclosed in high walls and well-guarded.

Specifically, he pressed for the international community to act “decisively” on this matter, and move whatever mountains they could to help the migrants.

Here’s a thought: How about opening up Vatican City as a migrant shelter?

From Breitbart:

Pope Francis issued an appeal to the “international community” Sunday, pleading for swift and decisive action to bring an end to migrant shipwrecks in the Mediterranean Sea.

“Dramatic news of shipwrecks of barges laden with migrants in the waters of the Mediterranean have arrived over these last weeks,” the pope said following his weekly Angelus prayer in Saint Peter’s Square. “I express my sorrow in the face of such tragedies and assure my thoughts and prayers for the victims and their families.”

“I address a heartfelt plea to the international community to act decisively and promptly in order to prevent such tragedies from happening, and to ensure security and respect for the rights and dignity of all,” he said.

In his appeal, the pontiff did not explain what sort of action he is hoping for from international powers, but his ongoing support for a sweeping “welcome” of migrants would suggest that he believes the best course of action to be an increased presence of rescue vessels in the Mediterranean to assure that as many migrants as possible reach safe harbor in European ports.

In recent weeks a number of Catholic bishops from Italy and Malta have expressed their opposition to the tightened immigration policies of their respective governments, blaming closed ports for migrant deaths at sea.

In Malta, both Archbishop Charles Scicluna and Bishop Mario Grech have voiced public support for a statement by NGOs claiming that the consequences of the government’s decision to close its ports “are potentially fatal, as the vessels will no longer be able to continue saving lives in the Mediterranean Sea.”

“Although supposedly aimed at ensuring respect for the law, this action directly undermines the protection of human life at Europe’s borders, making them even more dangerous for refugees and asylum seekers,” the NGOs said.

In Italy, the Sicilian Cardinal Francesco Montenegro responded to Interior Minister Matteo Salvini’s decision not to allow an NGO vessel to unload economic migrants from North Africa earlier this month by comparing migrants who drown at sea to Jesus Christ.

“It is Jesus coming to us on a vessel, he is in the man or child who drowns, it is Jesus who fishes through the garbage in search of a little food,” he said.

Montenegro blamed migrant sea deaths on efforts to curb mass migration, which in turn would be motivated by callousness and indifference.

“It’s a society, but unfortunately also a religion that ignores human rights, that creates the poor and then doesn’t want them because they are irksome and lets them die,” Montenegro said.

Attempts to tie migrant deaths with tighter controls on sea ports runs into a serious problem, however, when the available immigration data is carefully analyzed.

As both the UNHCR and IOM have recently reported, migrant deaths in the Mediterranean have dropped dramatically in the first six months of 2018, at the same time European leaders have sent the message that borders are no longer open to economic migrants.

Having fewer migrants on the seas has resulted—unsurprisingly—in far fewer deaths.

For the first half of 2018, sea deaths fell to 1,058, less than half the 2,258 migrant sea deaths recorded during the same six-month period of 2017.

From January through June, Italy’s immigration figures have similarly undergone a drastic reduction, thanks in part to its new populist government, and numbers for the first half of the year reflect an 80 percent decline over the same period of 2017.

According to data released earlier this month by the United Nations immigration agency (UNHCR), a total of 16,919 migrants arrived by sea into Italy prior to July 8, whereas over the same period in 2017 a total of 85,197 migrants had arrived.

The total number of migrants lost at sea reached its highest point in 2016, with 4,578 migrants determined to be either dead or missing. That year also marked the record number of migrants arriving across the Mediterranean onto Italian shores, a total of 181,436, UNHCR reported.

Statistics from UNHCR and IOM strongly indicate that the recent decline in migrant sea deaths correlates directly to more restrictive immigration policies.

In this light, people who take the pope’s appeal seriously should support more stringent immigration regulations to prevent would-be migrants from recklessly embarking on a perilous sea voyage that could cost them their lives.

Start a Christian army, invade Libya and force it to become a Christian nation. Ends slave markets, stops invasion of Europe, and fulfills duty of Christians to obey 1st Commandment of “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.” Which is anywhere in His line of vision which is everywhere.

Satan wouldn’t like that, doing something like that to his followers. He has a good reason/purpose for moving them to all these non-muslim countries. They will be working for him, during the tribulation, since he, himself, as a human (then), won’t be able to be in more than one place at a time. If christians and jews (and others), don’t take his mark (during the tribulation), they get exterminated. Who’s going to do the exterminating? His followers, the so called “immigrants/refugees”, the ones, that already hate christians, jews, etc…as much as satan does! That’s why he’s moving them all over the world, to all these non-muslim countries! So how are the christians and jews, exterminated? Rev 20:4 tells you, but here’s a hint….it’s in the koran also, as “strike the necks”. So you would think, that the tribulation would be coming soon. Well, if this peace plan that Trump is so happy, and positive about, that he his son working on, is for 7 years (signed by 2 certain countries), well, you can then count on it being, the beginning of the end!

Yes, Jesus teaches us to see Him in everyone. cf. Matthew 24-25

However … He also teaches us to see Him in baby rape victims, rape victims, murder victims, and other crime victims … not to mention those who must live with the constant harassment, vandalism, littering, fraud, and fear brought into their neighborhood by people who hate them.

Jesus also taught us not to hate anyone – but obviously this Pope and Cardinal Montenegro think this rule does not apply to them. They cannot seem to see the face of Jesus either in their Church, their neighbors, or the victims to whom they are responsible.

Hope they like their vacations HOT …

Gives the list of 33,401 deadly Islamist attacks just since 9/11/01. It has the historical business also. You can count the deadly Islamist attacks between the Muslim takeover of Jerusalem and about 400 years later Pope Leo’s starting the first Crusade. Robert [not Richard] Spencer’s books are good. The latest is the ‘History of Jihad’. The rest of his books are on Amazon. Also read Raymond Ibrahim on persecution of Christians and Soeren Kern and Gatestone Institute on Europe’s problems with immigration. It sounds like you have not read the Koran. [plenty of Christians have not read the Bible.] Who to kill is in the Koran in spades. The site gives the number of times it says to kill Jews and Christians [a lot], how to beat your wife and even how to clean up after sex with an animal before you have sex with a human.

Of course you are right. When Christians were being savage murdered in Mosul and other Iraq cities and towns, children children decapitated, cut in two, or buried alive for refusing to abandon their faith in Jesus, other Christians crucified, others burned to death in wooden coffins, steel cages or boiling water or oil, this disgusting, fraud, Pope said nothing. Thus I don’t understand Donald Trump asking Israel’s Benjamin Netanyahu to save Syria’s ‘White Helmets’ Muslims rather than the most persecuted people in Syria and Iraq, Christians, Yazidis and other non-Muslim minorities. That Justin Trudeau would ask for this help is par for the course.

If you think that Trump has it right, then explain to me, why there are thousands of muslims still here in this country, and why Americans are still dying, because of them. How many deportations have happened in the last few months? You hear of any lately?? And how come, as I archive everything about Islam/muslims, since 9/11, I’m collecting more and more articles about schools, and how their teaching our young children about Islam, and even what to say, to become one!! And please tell me why he hosted a Ramadan dinner at the White House, and told all muslims to have a happy holiday? I could go on, but tell what is right about all that, that he has done so far? He has troops killing “them” over THERE, when he should be HERE, knocking out a few, so I won’t read another article, or see it on the news, about another American getting killed, because of THEM, over HERE! Yes, he’s done a few good things, but as this country has almost 50 muslim training camps, I would appreciate it, if Trump would exterminate the one I have, in MY state! But mostly, get a dang Secretary of Education, that will stop Islam being taught in schools to our young children!!

Wow, great article, EXCEPT the ads on there!!! UGH!! But at least they got ONE thing exactly right, and that is

“fears that he is the false prophet warned about in holy scripture and prophecy.”

No statement could be truer than THAT!! A lot of people, including me, believe the pope will be the third of that evil trinity, the “False Prophet”! Anyway, Soros paying them off, STILL doesn’t answer the question of WHY? Well, I figured it out, if anyone wants to hear it. It all makes sense, when you think about this HUGE immigration to all these non-muslim countries, and how it could relate to Revelation. I’ll just say that, if this peace plan that Trump has got his son working on, and the one he feels positive and excited about, is a 7 year one, then I’d certainly beg people to decide now, on which side of the fence, they want to be on, because it’s the beginning of the end!

I’ve suggested that Pope Francis put his rental plane into service ferrying the migrants directly to Rome. Thus, there would be no drownings. He never answered me. What do you call it when you have the ability to save lives but don’t do it? And, then you complain about others who don’t do it. Probably Soros could easily be running daily flights from Africa and the mid-East to Rome, Paris, London and Frankfurt. So… why aren’t these dudes doing it? I don’t get it.

The Pope is saying that the current situation sucks and needs fixing. This is not wrong.

Pope Francis is wise in not specifying the solution. There are multiple ones that would satisfy the Pope, including some that would be Pamela Geller approved. Here are a few:

1. Everybody in Africa treat each other with dignity and respect including respect for economic liberty that would allow them to build lives over there in their home countries.
2. Supporting those attacked and put upon by horrible governments to remove their violent, disgusting ruling classes over there so they don’t have to become refugees in Europe.
3. Set up decent housing and opportunity zones on the N. African coast that allows those that lost their fight against tyranny to stay and regroup close to home so they can get back into the fight and actually win.

Right wing compatible solutions are generally about preventing disaster, then localizing it so it doesn’t spread. Left wing solutions are generally about ignoring the disaster as it builds. Then, when it has a good head of steam, mitigating it and spreading around the consequences.

Short version: Copy us do not invade us. Running water alone does so much for life and sanitation. When I traveled in Morocco a few years ago there were very long roads connecting small towns. Every third of a mile or so, there was a government dug well for anyone living off road in tents to use. Simple. The King pays for cable you just buy the equipment. Can you think of a quicker way to bring people into the 21st century? He requires gvt education for Imams and monitors sermons in the Mosques. In the Sahara, we saw a young shepherd in his robes tending his sheep and talking animatedly on his cell phone.

I agree with the Pope but probably not the way he means. In Australia, hundreds of ‘refugees’ from poor Asian countries died in leaky boats heading for Oz. Now that they have created a 100% turn-back rate for such ships and 24 hour naval vigilance there have been NO such deaths. A lot of suffering however for the human traffickers who used to make millions in the business.

Well, the intelligent people, will have their eyes and ears open, enough, to see that the Catholic religion, has, for lack of a better terminology, “gone to the dogs”. So congrats to you, your one of the smarter ones, to see and hear, the evil of this so called “pope”, who most people already know, will be the third part of the trilogy (satan, the antichrist, and the false prophet), the “False Prophet”….and if anyone reading this, doesn’t know anything about this “triology”, I speak of, it’s just one of the MANY things, satan does, to copy God, so christians will follow him (satan), and THINK their a christian following God, who has His triology (God, the Father, and the Holy Spirit).
So Ken, I’m happy for you! Hope you can teach other catholics what you know, so they might be able to see the Light, and “come out of her”.

In past years we heard the prophesy that the next pope would be a black pope and the last pope. Euphoria reigned because it was assumed that the black pope meant, literally, that the next pope would be black. Nobody really thought otherwise and it turned out that the “black pope” meant a Jesuit pope. Jesuits are referred to as “black robes.” Jesuits are globalists amongst other things and some research will glean interesting insights. This current person may very well be the last pope if we get all-out war of some type or a world-wide caliphate. It is easy to pick off smaller geographic entities such as Ireland, Scotland, Wales, and California, if split into three would inevitably go caliphate in one of the parts. Certainly the south would go to Mexico. Ironically, the name California is unknown in origin but it sounds suspiciously like “Caliphornia.” Many years ago I read of this as speculation on the origin of the name.
