Fake news is a big problem today: see Time Magazine’s vicious new cover. But fake news also extends to rewriting history to influence public policy today.
In the course of denying the Holocaust in a speech last month, as reported by MEMRI, Kuwaiti Muslim cleric Sheikh Jihad Al-‘Ayesh claimed that Hitler began “tormenting and persecuting” because he “knew the truth” about them: “The Jews were banished, tortured and annihilated because of their deeds. They were not banished for being Jews.” He added: “There were Jews in the Islamic countries and caliphates as well, but we never killed them just for being Jews. No, it never happened.” Yet it did. And if we fail to remember this today, we will, as the old adage goes, be condemned to repeat it.
When Al-‘Ayesh says that Muslims never killed Jews just for being Jews, he is lying, and relying on the historical ignorance of his audience. In my new book The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS, I detail many instances in which Muslims did exactly that. In 1013, Berbers from North Africa entered Spain and took Córdoba in 1013, they began massacring Jews, and initiated a wholesale slaughter of Jews in Granada. And again in 1066, rioting Muslims, enraged by the humiliation of a Jew who had been appointed to rule over Muslims, murdered four thousand Jews in Granada. The twelfth century Muslim historian Ibn Baydhaq detailed how the Almohads treated the Jews as they advanced:
Abd al-Mumin…the leader of the Almohads after the death of Muhammad ibn Tumart the Mahdi…captured Tlemcen [in the Maghreb] and killed all those who were in it, including the Jews, except those who embraced Islam…. [In Sijilmasa] one hundred and fifty persons were killed for clinging to their [Jewish] faith…. All the cities in the Almoravid state were conquered by the Almohads. One hundred thousand persons were killed in Fez on that occasion, and 120,000 in Marrakesh. The Jews in all [Maghreb] localities [conquered]…groaned under the heavy yoke of the Almohads; many had been killed, many others converted; none were able to appear in public as Jews.
The likes of Jihad Al-‘Ayesh don’t want you to know this, and much more about the sorry history of Islamic antisemitism, because of the jihad against the modern-day State of Israel. Revisionist history is designed to influence the contemporary debate. The more that Al-‘Ayesh can convince Muslims today that Jews in the Holocaust got nothing but what they deserved, and had responded with ingratitude to kindness shown them through the ages, the more he and his allies can justify the “Palestinian” genocidal rhetoric and fanatical hatred that targets Israelis every day.
The advocates of the “Palestinian” jihad also get support from their holy book. The Qur’an depicts the Jews as inveterately evil and bent on destroying the well-being of the Muslims. They are the strongest of all people in enmity toward the Muslims (5:82); they fabricate things and falsely ascribe them to Allah (2:79; 3:75, 3:181); they claim that Allah’s power is limited (5:64); they love to listen to lies (5:41); they disobey Allah and never observe his commands (5:13). They are disputing and quarreling (2:247); hiding the truth and misleading people (3:78); staging rebellion against the prophets and rejecting their guidance (2:55); being hypocritical (2:14, 2:44); giving preference to their own interests over the teachings of Muhammad (2:87); wishing evil for people and trying to mislead them (2:109); feeling pain when others are happy or fortunate (3:120); being arrogant about their being Allah’s beloved people (5:18); devouring people’s wealth by subterfuge (4:161); slandering the true religion and being cursed by Allah (4:46); killing the prophets (2:61); being merciless and heartless (2:74); never keeping their promises or fulfilling their words (2:100); being unrestrained in committing sins (5:79); being cowardly (59:13-14); being miserly (4:53); being transformed into apes and pigs for breaking the Sabbath (2:63-65; 5:59-60; 7:166); and more. They are under Allah’s curse (9:30), and Muslims should wage war against them and subjugate them under Islamic hegemony (9:29).
The antidote to the propaganda that the believers in that hatred and incitement pump out on a regular basis is the truth. Don’t allow yourself to be deceived by the likes of Jihad Al-‘Ayesh. Click here to preorder The History of Jihad From Muhammad to ISIS.
