ISIS Prisoners Take Control Of Jail In Indonesia, Live Stream From Inside The Facility
MEMRI, May 8, 2018:
On the evening of May 8, 2018, a riot broke out in the Mako Brimob Detention Center near Jakarta, Indonesia. When this report was published, the situation was not yet resolved. The prison is a high security facility for terror suspects and convicts. Apparently, before the news was made public, the Islamic State (ISIS) news agency A’maq had already reported that ISIS fighters were engaged in clashes against security forces inside the jail. Subsequent to publication of the first report, ISIS media published several messages, a video, and images from inside the jail suggesting the group of rebel prisoners was in direct contact with ISIS media operatives from the central office. In November 2017, an unarmed riot occurred in the same prison facility, during which prisoners were seen raising ISIS flags. The liberation of Muslim prisoners is an important religious value for jihadists and is also beneficial for recruitment and outreach purposes. Regardless of its outcome, this event will strengthen the appeal of ISIS to its fighters and supporters across East Asia, where the lack of an Al-Qaeda presence is an advantage for the group.

Official ISIS Claims
Over the course of the evening of May 8, pictures and videos began to circulate on social media depicting dead prison personnel and showing the prisoners holding weapons. The ISIS A’maq agency also published several communiques stating that 10 members of the counter-terror forces were killed during the firefight in the jail, and one was taken hostage. ISIS also announced that the prisoners had seized several weapons.

The ISIS branch in East Asia claimed responsibility for the revolt and stated that the prisoners had armed themselves and managed to surprise the prison guards before engaging in a firefight with the counter-terror forces that arrived later. The message included a prayer for the release of the ISIS prisoners and for the hoped-for massacre of the Indonesian security forces described as apostates.
From inside the jail ISIS published several photographs and also a video, through its official channels.
