Hi, turkeychoker. Whereabouts, in Iowa? I get there, infrequently, as both my daughters are in Des Moines. I used to belong to New Pioneer Gun Club (Waukee), when I was a dez-deemoinite. GREAT club. That’s where Boyd Wickham (world NSSA .410 record holder of many years shot). He helped my skeet game along, immensely. Bob Allen, of trap fame, shot there as well. Maybe we can get David to fly into NE Nohio … and take a fourteen hour drive with me. I like to get into Iowa County, every now and then … set up camp around the Iowa River .. and shoot vermin (coons and coyotes) … but, being close to your age, it’s normally just a three day affair.

We used to go to horse and saddlery auctions, in Kalona, as one of my mother’s first cousins was really into the horse set … Kalona had lots of Amish, but I never heard of a town called Amish. How close to Kalona is it?
The “achmed mohammedan” is normally spotted, by true moslem haters. “ahmed” is the moslem name. When the Germans had dealings with moslems, most could not pronounce “ahmed”, and it came out “achmed”, similar to the sound of coughing up a loogie. The moslems didn’t like that, at first, but got used to it. The use of “mohammedan” is due to it being an insult to moslems. Call any moslem a “mohammedan” and they’ll start to shiver and shake, turn all different hues of color and froth at the mouth. I used to post, under the moniker of “White Privilege”, but … hitting moslem youtube sites, and using “achmed mohammedan”, really riled ’em up.
I grew up, on a farm, around 9.5 miles southwest of the county seat of Iowa county (Marengo), went to Iowa Valley Community Schools, and graduated from the University of Iowa. I’m what you would call “about as corn fed” as you can get.
Back in the eighties, I used to hunt deer hunt, in Lucas County. There was an annual driven hunt, that had originally be organized, shortly after WWII. The son of the man that started that hunt, was running it then. There’s a small town, in Lucas County (name will be kept confidential for reasons), that had the second highest poverty rate in the state. We would all pitch in and buy licenses and tags for many of the widows … and, of course the older farmers had their landowner’s permits … so, it was time to slaughter deer …. we had tags a-plenty to fill. I was told, “If you see it, shoot it … we have the tags. Always hunted second season, as at that time … that was the only way to get a two tag permit. We’d kill ’em on Saturday … pick up more on Sunday … field dress them and hang them, in skin. The next weekend, we would get together Friday night and Saturday, then skin them while hanging. Sunday was butcher day. We’d butcher and wrap, while someone was busy grilling backstrap on set up Weber kettles. Then, start delivering the venison to the widows (that town was filled with them) and some elderly men. One year, we took up a collection and bought twenty-five used freezers … and set those up in the houses (I’d never seen so many old two bedroom houses … and a few one bedroom houses). So many of the older women would have been baking and sending us away with cakes, cookies, and pies … Those were the salad days. One Saturday, I harvested twenty-one deer .. button bucks and does … I didn’t have a single shot at a decent buck … There’s a story …. very long story, that goes with that Saturday “event”. I have never, having harvested many deer … not once have I shot a decent buck. I used to say, “I’m a meat hunter .. I don’t give a whit about trophies”. But, that was a LIE …. sour grapes being what they are. To this day, I’d like to take down a buck with one heck of a rack … It doesn’t need to be a Boone and Crocket … just one time … a semi-decent rack …. just SEMI-decent. Well, it’s still on my bucket list.
