Carter Center Sued for Providing Support to Terrorists, Defrauding Taxpayers

Trump admin says case too expensive to prosecute, seeks dismissal

The Trump administration is seeking the dismissal of a suit alleging the nonprofit helmed by former president Jimmy Carter has used taxpayer funding to provide material support to international terrorist groups, including Hamas.

Story continues below advertisement

The Zionist Advocacy Center, which filed the recently unsealed suit in 2015, alleges the Carter Center received more than $30 million in taxpayer grants while violating federal statutes barring it from using the cash to provide material support to terror groups.

The plaintiffs maintain the Carter Center has violated the law by hosting designated terrorists at is facilities, as well as by providing various forms of assistance to the Palestinian terror group Hamas and other known terror entities, according to recently unsealed court documents.

The Department of Justice surprised pro-Israel insiders recently when it moved to have the case dismissed on the grounds it is too expensive to prosecute, according to court filings the administration had requested remain secret.

A hearing on the dismissal motion will occur on April 25, though legal experts handling the case are hoping to convince the DOJ to reverse its opinion beforehand, according to those familiar with the proceedings.

Evidence presented in the case purports to show the Carter Center accepted millions in government grants while falsely certifying it was not violating prohibitions on providing material support to terror groups, which include a broad range of factors including lodgings, expert advice, and other types of support.

Former President Carter’s ongoing and well-documented interactions with Hamas and Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) are tantamount to material support for terror groups, the suit alleges citing evidence Carter hosted these officials at his Center’s offices.

This also includes providing services and advice to Hamas and other individuals and organizations designated as terrorists by the U.S. government.

While the Trump administration’s lawyers admit in their motion to dismiss that Carter has in fact met with designated terrorists and terror groups, they are seeking to have the case tossed because it would be too expensive to adjudicate in court.

“Representatives of the Carter Center have engaged in discussions and meetings with members of Hamas and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine,” the government’s motion states.

However, “the primary purposes of these activities were to facilitate dialog between the Palestinian factions and to urge Hamas to recognize Israel’s right to exist, forgo violence, and accept previous peace agreements,” Trump administration lawyers maintain, adding that these activities were not concealed from the public.

Due to the publicly available nature of these interactions, the DOJ maintains the activity should not be classified as material support for terrorists, according to the government’s dismissal motion.

The DOJ did not immediately have comment on the case. A representative for the Carter Center did not respond to multiple Free Beacon requests for comment.

The DOJ maintained in its motion to dismiss the case that the core issue represents “a difference of opinion with the Carter Center about how to resolve conflict in the Middle East” and, for that reason, does not violate laws barring material support to terror groups.

Well at least the feds have to stop giving Carter money
– Carter has been dirty since he took Arab money to bail out his bankrupt peanut business
– and that happened while he was president
– in the middle of the Arab oil crisis

How is that Trump was going to drain the swamp but substantially the swamp aggressively continues? Too expensive?? How about recovering the misused 30 mil? Where is Sessions? Or what is he or is he simply unqualified and overwhelmed? Does he not know what is happening under his authority or does he not care?

“Where is Sessions?” Haven’t you heard that he is a Deep State operative? Haven’t you heard: Att. General Jeff Sessions warned the White House recently that he could resign if President Trump were to fire Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein. ”
That worthless OLD man – Sessions- should have been fired long ago. I wish he would RESIGN….

And yes , he is both ‘unqualified and incompetent.’

Correct..he also doesn’t advise Trump that immigration laws that seem to protect illegal entrants at the border from immediate deportation are actually left over interpretations from the Obama, and in some cases Bush, administrations (and not appellate court decisions) that can be more strictly interpreted by this administrations to protect American interests. In some situations those interpretations are based on executive orders that can be simply changed with a new executive order. It is a wonder that he supported Trump early if in fact his intentions were business as usual if he was put in charge, or he didn’t know the difference. His protection of Rosenstein was an incredulous development. But the old man is also overwhelmed and therefore professionally unqualified.

However, is Trump competent to know completely what is happening and then can he pick a forceful alternative to get things done after Sessions is gone? Considering his pick to run the VA is just a bureaucrat doctor, who will also be outmatched and overwhelmed by that corrupt bureaucracy, I am not sure about Trump. He puts too much value on personal relationships and overestimates the management potential of those with professional experience and reputations, just as he does with people with General in front of their name.. As with Sessions example, the personal trust he feels from apparent loyalty doesn’t go far in draining the swamp.

I agree—-
I am however extremely glad that he got rid of worthless McMaster—I believe that all the medals on that mans’ chest impressed Trump; however he (Trump) should have looked deeply and more closely into McMaster’s service record…. here is just some thing that many people don’t know about ‘Deceptive’ McMaster: A legend or a Lie??
Fresh on the heels of a successful offensive in Mosul, Iraq, the Iraqi military is now poised to retake Tal Afar, long a hotbed of ISIS and other insurgent activity. Before we pulled out of Iraq, Tal Afar, like Fallujah, had been the focal point of multiple large-scale, costly offensives to eject entrenched insurgents. In 2005, then-Colonel H.R. McMaster led the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment (3rd ACR) in the largest of these offensives, Operation Restoring Rights. His reputation as a brilliant military strategist rests largely on the results of that one battle. Given the widespread support for McMaster in the media and Washington establishment, it is ironic that current reporting largely fails to mention this battle or McMaster’s central role in it.
McMaster’s widely-hyped strategic acumen has been called into
question by high-level military sources with personal knowledge of his
conduct in the field. These sources spoke with me on condition of
anonymity. McMaster rests his laurels on the counter-insurgency strategy he claims won the Battle of Tal Afar, Iraq. But sources say McMaster ignored counter-insurgency experts and that his reckless leadership killed between 70 and 85* Americans and almost lost the battle. The battle, the sources say, was won only through a valiant rescue mission during which most of those casualties occurred.* Until today this information has been suppressed.
Natl. Security Advisor McMaster is facing sustained criticism for his seemingly relentless opposition to Trump policies, his purging of many competent, conservative Trump loyalists from the National Security Council staff, and “protecting and coddling” 40 Obama holdovers — almost one-sixth of the NSC staff — who are plainly out to sabotage the Trump agenda. There is more, but I think it gives you a heads up on McMaster.

After McMaster got rid of ALL of Trumps loyalists; this is when I knew that McMaster was NOT whom he pretended to be. And what’s even worse is that Trump did “nothing ” to stop him!! A total disappointment …..

Yes he stuck with him too long if he should have trusted him originally (thanks for the good combat review), and we could delve even deeper into McMaster’s submission to the Islamophobia narrative, but even Mattis isn’t everything that conservatives want to believe, although i would generally trust him as a combat commander (I am a Vietnam era Armor officer) His reputation is significantly developed through his own mouth and by unequivocally accepting the recent Syrian gas attack claims from “intelligence” despite acknowledging that neither Sarin gas of a year ago or Assad’s responsibility for it have yet to be confirmed (while a careful review of even the videos available within days disproves Sarin gas) puts him solidly under the influence of the deep state and financial interest that have us in Syria. I like and would vote again for Trump but he is in a very difficult and more complex league than anything he ever experienced before.

Carter has always been a terrorist sympathizer; he and Arafat played tootsies. The fact that Trump’s administration is seeking a dismissal is disconcerting. When the hell is Trump and his crew going to grows some gonads? None of us are privy to the inner-workings of the inner-sanctum but with overt corruption throughout the Democratic party and its cabal, seemingly, they are untouchable. Meanwhile, the Dems have no issue raking Trump through the proverbial coals to usurp his presidency. Carter, the second worst President surpassed by the ‘new messiah, Obama, once again evades indictment.

I can’t decide if Carter or Obama was the worst president in the history of this country. Carter has always had it in for Jews since the orthodox Jews voted for Reagan in higher numbers than any other group. Carter blames Jews for his loss even though the orthodox Jewish vote represented a tiny percent of the overall electorate, but why not, just blame the Jews.

Agree. And dismiss the DOJ officials who think its costly to prosecute the case ! Mueller fake case can go on but case against support to terrorists is too costly ! Trump clearly has no clue about this.

Trump was conned by Abbas initially but when he found out the truth boy was he mad as hell at the jihadi http://bit.ly/2rOmfyJ

That’s when he decided enough is enough and that inspite of huge opposition led to shifting of Embassy to Jerusalem and No more funding to the jihadis.

Exactly, R. Arandas, if it were you, me or some other citizen, indictments would be dealt out hardcore. Meanwhile, not only Carter is being handed a get out of jail card but the perfidious like of Obama, Clinton and other slothful Democrats are shamelessly betraying the Republic, its President and ‘We the People’. They deserve to be sleeping with the fishes.

So, if you want to support terrorists, all you have to do is say that you are trying to get them to become peaceful? This foolish move by the DOJ, will provide fodder for every supporter of terror, to take the same argument of paying terrorists to promote peace. What a load of garbage. And to say it is too expensive, is another phony argument. We pay big money for a “special counsel,” to look into the President/Russia collusion. That is the true waste of money.
