Tillerson Fired Over Rogue Bid to Save Iran Nuke Deal

53

In light of this, it is very good that President Trump fired Tillerson. Trump campaigned on the promise to cancel the Iran deal, which he correctly called the worst deal in American history. He has been restrained from doing so by holdover Obama-era Iran appeasers, as well as by those who have been influenced by them. Chief among that group is Tillerson. Now with Pompeo at the helm at State, maybe the State Department swamp will finally be drained, and some real America-First personnel appointed.

“Tillerson Fired Over Rogue Bid to Save Iran Nuke Deal,” by Adam Kredo, Washington Free Beacon, March 13, 2018:

The abrupt firing Tuesday of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson follows months of infighting between the State Department and White House over efforts by Tillerson to save the Iran nuclear deal and ignore President Donald Trump’s demands that the agreement be fixed or completely scrapped by the United States, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the situation who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon.

Story continues below advertisement

In the weeks leading up to Tillerson’s departure, he had been spearheading efforts to convince European allies to agree to a range of fixes to the nuclear deal that would address Iran’s ongoing ballistic missile program and continued nuclear research.

While Trump had prescribed a range of fixes that he viewed as tightening the deal’s flaws, Tillerson recently caved to European pressure to walk back these demands and appease Tehran while preserving the deal, according to these sources. The Free Beacon first disclosed this tension last week in a wide-ranging report.

White House allies warned Tillerson’s senior staff for weeks that efforts to save the nuclear deal and balk on Trump’s key demands regarding the deal could cost Tillerson his job, a warning that became reality Tuesday when Trump fired Tillerson by tweet.

Tillerson will be replaced by CIA Director Mike Pompeo, a former member of Congress who established a record as being tough on Iran and echoing many of the policies called for by Trump. Insiders expect Pompeo to take a much harder line on the nuclear deal and pursue many of the fixes advocated by Trump, such as outlawing Iran’s ballistic missile program and instating fierce repercussions for any future breach.

While Tillerson’s exit had been rumored for months, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation said the former secretary’s repeated attempts to balk the White House and pursue his own diplomatic strategy, particularly regarding Iran, triggered his sudden exit.

Sources with knowledge of the matter said the White House informed Tillerson on Friday that Trump was seeking to make a change.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R., Fla.), a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and vocal opponent of the nuclear deal, said he expects Pompeo to more faithfully execute Trump’s policies regarding Iran.

“President Trump has been clear that the Iran deal is terrible policy and has sought ways to hold Iran accountable,” DeSantis told the Free Beacon. “With Mike Pompeo, Trump will have a Secretary of State who sees the threat posed by the JCPOA [Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action] and by Tehran in a similar light as he does.”

One veteran Iran policy expert who is close to the White House and worked repeatedly with the State Department told the Free Beacon that Tillerson worked to save the Iran deal as Trump was publicly advocating to scrap the agreement.

This tension between the White House and Foggy Bottom came to a head in recent days, prompting Trump to fire Tillerson and bring in Pompeo, an official who Trump believes will pressure European allies to more seriously fix a range of flaws in the nuclear deal.

“Tillerson staked his position on saving the Iran deal by threading the needle. He promised the president he could strengthen it enough to be good, but not so much the Europeans would backlash or the Iranians would bolt,” said the source, who would only speak about the sensitive matter on background. “That was always going to be tricky, then it became impossible, then it became embarrassing. The Europeans weren’t giving us enough on missiles and were refusing to budge on sunsets. And so here we are.”

Opponents of the Iran deal on Capitol Hill welcomed the news of Tillerson’s exit, telling the Free Beacon that as the deadline approaches for the United States and European allies to fix the Iran deal, Pompeo can help push Trump’s hardline stance.

“As the deadline approaches to fix the Iran Deal, Tillerson’s departure is welcome news. We need our top diplomat to share the president’s view on the disastrous nature of the JCPOA, and CIA Director Pompeo is the right man for the job,” said one senior congressional official who works on the Iran issue. “Hopefully now our European partners understand the president’s resolve and will work with us to permanently prevent Iran from going nuclear.”

Shortly after Trump fired Tillerson, the former secretary’s spokesman issued a statement claiming Tillerson was not sure of the reason for his dismissal.

“The secretary did not speak to the president and is unaware of the reason,” Steve Goldstein, undersecretary for public diplomacy, told reporters. Goldstein was fired later in the day due to his statement….

Dems supported Iran nuke deal after getting paid by Iranian lobbyists https://tinyurl.com/mcake4d

Exactly, Suresh, the MSM the news no one can trust. The Dems, the MSM and every leftist has sold out America along with their other allies, Islam and Iran. I had heard rumor that Tillerson was unilaterally trying to ‘save’ the Iran Deal; the rumor was fact. One less parasitical amoeba in the swamp.

Don’t forget that Pompeo’s appointment is subject to Swamp (senate) approval. And because he is touted for being expected to closely follow Trump’s agenda and to help drain the swamp expect his senate approval to drag on for quite a while. I think they will Bork him.

I wonder how far down into the layers of bureaucracy the “screw America”, naive Pollyanna-esque Tillerson policy goes in the State Department? Are the rank and file in State so brainwashed in leftist/progressive ideology that they will sabotage whoever Trump installs at the top?

I’m sure the layers are endless, gfmucci; Leftist Progressivism is a metastasized malignancy. The MSM howls with glee whenever Trump ‘fires’ a so-called associate; touting it betrays Trump’s instability, confirmation that the White House is dysfunctional. The undermining of Trump commenced when he was running for the Republican nomination. The Republicans by-and-large were of the same perfidy, disloyalty as the Democrats, no worse. The Democrats lost because Trump endorsed America, the Republic’s Constitution, most importantly, ‘We the People’ of every status.

Obama is embedded deeply in the subversive concoction bent on Trump’s and the Nation’s downfall.

His predecessor loathed all the above and more; however, he was smarmy and more so, the nation’s first Black President. Obama procured racism, civil instability, a progressive mandate that, in the end, America said enough and voted for Trump. If Trump were not a successful white businessman but of a minority, race or creed or if he were against the foundation upon which America succeeded, he would be the Progressives and the Leftists’ new Messiah. Forgive my log-winded reply.

I don’t support the Iran Nuclear Deal, but I am worried by the president’s tendency to fire people he disagrees with. Tillerson being the latest example. The whole point of a democracy is for different points of view, different opinions to be heard and considered. For any leader–not just Trump, but Clinton and Obama as well–to close their ears to other points of view leads to polarization.

The president is elected to head the “executive branch”. He was not elected to keep APPOINTED cabinet members and other appointed officials, on staff, because “democracy is for different points of view”. The chief executive is SUPPOSED to fire staff that do not follow his directives. Have you ever owned a business with employees? Good grief!

Topaz

Trump’s been firing people like crazy since he took office–a sign of instability and unrest that goes beyond what’s needed to get things done. I understand that he wants to get rid of corruption, but he seems to be using that as an excuse to fire anyone who disagrees.

I’m not trying to be confrontational, but let me reverse the scenario: if it had been Obama firing that many people in the first year of his presidency, would you have supported that? Would it have been okay for him to fire dozens of staff who didn’t support everything he did?
I don’t think for one moment it would have been okay for him to do that, and I doubt you would either.

I wouldn’t support that behavior from anyone–Obama or Trump, Republican or Democrat–because if people don’t open themselves to different opinions, it stunts their ability to find solutions.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m not supporting political correctness; I’m as sick of that as anyone. And I’m ot supporting giving up on important policies. But it’s one thing to get things done–it’s another to close one’s mind to anyone not in ‘his’ group; which ends up making it harder, not easier, to find solutions.

When a secretary, a full cabinet position, refuses to implement the chief executive’s directives, there is little recourse BUT to terminate them. This is not a scenario of “disagreeing”. If a cabinet member disagrees with the president, that is a good thing. Explaining said opinion, and even vigorously arguing for such, is to be expected. However, upon said discourse and after hearing the opposing view(s), if the president is resolved for a position … It is for that cabinet member to do their absolute best to implement that directive. It is obvious that little rexxie would not do so. At that point, there is no other solution but termination. The United States citizenry did not elect rexxie, they elected Trump.
Have you ever owned a business, with employees that YOU paid? That’s the way things work, in the real world.

It’s not necessarily the Iran Nuclear Deal that led to Tillerson’s firing….he’s got different ideas on dealing with North Korea than Trump does. Since his firing, Trump’s hired Pompeo, who favors military action.

There’s a lot of talk that that’ the real reason Tillerson was fired–not because he refused his orders, but because he didn’t want to do things the same way the president wanted to hear them.

I don’t know for sure which scenario is true–if you’re right, and Tillerson went rogue, that’s one thing. But the rate at which Trump’s been firing people suggests he doesn’t have much tolerance for disagreement, which is worrying in a leader of a democracy.

Achmed Mohammedan

Tillerson did not go “rogue”. He refused to implement the policies of the president. Trump’s problem(s) are not with him firing … Rather, they were selecting poor candidates for his cabinet. As far as “North Korea” goes .. there would be NO “North Korea”, had it not been for Franklin D (the “D” stands for demonspawn) Roosevelt and his spirit brother Joseph Stalin, splitting Korea …. over the vehement objections of Churchill, at Yalta. May both demonspawn and stalin continue to rot in hell.
In the case of the government of the United States of America, we have three distinct (or at least we’re supposed to have) branches of government. The “tolerance for disagreement” has nothing to do with the Executive branch. The citizenry elects a president that heads and runs the executive branch. The “leader of a democracy” is supposed to enact the will of the people, something that he ran on and promised. NOT have his APPOINTED cabinet do other than as directed. Those that expect the president to allow State’s efforts to go against his policy … they know little about democracy.

Just how long can you entertain “different points of view” as nothing gets done. The U.S. is in this situation because of too much political correctness. Trump is acting, where others before him sought to ‘get more points of view.’ Enough of that sh*t. The time to act is now and he’s doing it.

Topaz

I don’t support political correctness either. And I’m sick and tired of nothing getting done too. But firing everyone who disagrees isn’t a good way to get things done–it’s a way to shut up people with different opinions.

Let me put it this way: when Obama stupidly ignored Republicans who wanted better national security, he was getting his policies done, but at the cost of half the country’s wishes. Trump is making a similar mistake–only in his case, it’s environmental and social issues he’s ignoring for his policies.

Obama ignored Republicans, which led to Trump being elected. If Trump ignores Democrats, that’ll lead to clamoring for a democratic president….and the cycle of ignoring the other side and only listening to part of the country will keep going on.

Disclaimer: I ain’t bright enough to be a politician. Now having made full disclosure, I have owned businesses, with employees. I welcomed dialogue. Disagree with me, on certain aspects of my business, if what was said was convincing, I would try them out. Normally, that was not a good idea. However, when policy was violated, and after careful consideration, my directives were not followed … that’s cause for dismissal.
Now, on to the body of your text. What “environmental and social issues” is he “ignoring” or following along the wrong path?

Trump didn’t close his ears…..he heard him loud and clear and it was the opposite of what he feels he needs to do for America…..Tillerson is a Globalist…..Trump is not and neither are we……
If you owned a company and decided what was best to grow your company….and then found out someone in your company was doing the opposite and trying to stop you in taking your company in the direction you think is right…..you’d just let your employee take your company down?
Tillerson had plenty of time to let Trump know what he wanted to do. Trump said no….Tillerson did it anyway…..
We The People elected Trump because we want what he said he would do…..now he’s doing it and you and others are second guessing him….

Alternative views are good. They should be listened to and evaluated. However, following those steps, if the president issues directives that are not following the alternative, it is the duty of a cabinet member to follow the president’s directives. Tillerson wasn’t elected, President Trump was. I believe that we’re in full agreement, Richard Canary. I cannot understand why others are incapable of grasping such a simple concept. I think what Trump has lost sight of is that we should never negotiate anything with terrorists. The government in Iran stole power in a coup (via force). They viciously suppress their own people while spreading terrorism throughout the world and threaten nuclear war with Israel and the US, the two major nations that threaten its hegemony in the region.

Would we have any ‘nuke deal’ with ISIS? So why are we doing that with Iran’s regime? The only ‘deal’ they should be given is de-nuclearize, surrender or else and of course they will never surrender so you wipe them out. Something GW Bush (Cheney tried to convince him) should’ve done when he was in power and we all would’ve been better off today.

Now unfortunately it falls to Trump to do what previous admins refused to. We need regime change in Iran, North Korea and Pakistan and also to confiscate all their nukes and dismantle their program which was illegally obtained. Then we should focus on regime change in all Islamic countries but that’s down the road…Iran/NK are the priority now.
